High honors were won by several of the contestants in the fields of oratorical, humorous, and dramatic interpretation, extemporaneous and impromptu speak- ing, and debate. The contests which WU students par- ticipated in were held at Merced, Bakersfield, Modesto, Clovis, and Fresno. The state qualifying contests were held at the College of the Pacific and in Bakersfield while the state meet was held in Santa Barbara. Contestants earn points toward mem- bership in the Nation Forensics League by participating in the contests. Points are based on placement in the contests. The speech instructor is Mr. Harvey Loy. They also sang carols at the Veteran's Administration Hos- pital in Fresno at Christmas. The members of the chorus also attended the Music Festival, as did the orchestra and band. The choir has improved greatly this year and Mr. Contor deserves a lot of credit for his fine work. Mr. E. K. Contor, Choir Director. This picture shows the choir as they looked on February 26, when they performed at a school assembly. 52 Orchestra This year the Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Contor, performed at three assemblies, in the spring festival, and also provided the music for the May Day celebration--both for the processional and recessional and the May Pole Dance. There were seven members of the Wash- ington Union High School Orchestra on the Honor Orchestra. This is a greater number than has ever before represented Washington and when all or most all of the schools in the valley are represented, this is a very good percentage for one school to have. Members of the Honor Orchestra were Stanley Badetscher, Chester Badetscher, Charles Cooper, Jennie Hill, Janet Yokomi, Angie Her- nandez, and Barbara Koop. Mr. E. Contor was the director of the Washington Union Orchestra this year. Here are the members of the Washington Orchestra. 53 Some of the activities of the 73rd Military Police Battalion during the past year were rifle matches, participation in parades, drill meets, bivouacs, COLOR GUARD--J. Mislang, M. Borgens, R. Stanley, R. encampments, and summer camp. These are just Honn. a few events as the WUHS cadets completed a full schedule of military training. Under the guidance of Mr. Earl Hazelton, retired Air Force Colonel, and Bruce Dirksen, Lieutenant AROTC, the cadets received valuable training in such fields as first aid, map reading, dismounted drill, fancy drill, boxing, wrestling, judo, squad tactics, preliminary rifle instructions, range firing, and battlefield tactics and firing. The cadets were trained under student commanders Captain Raymond Morse, Commanding Officer; and First Sergeant Mike Borgens, Executive Officer. OFFICERS--B. Dirksen, R. Morse, M. Borgens. The snow was beautiful and inviting and many seniors took advantage of it. Other members of the senior class were content to stay at home and rest up from three and a half years of drudgery. Then again some students had a little energy, but not quite as much as these girls did. These students went bowling, fishing, golfing, or just riding around. The evening of that day offered the pleasure of dancing and merry-making as the members of the senior class held a party at Hermann Hall. This rounded out the day. Many of the upperclass- men went home more tired than they had on any school day in their entire career. 56 OFFICERS--ROW Is L. Seto, Mr. Clark, J. Sarouhan, 1st, H. Arakawa. ROW 2: B. Steinhauer, D. Talent Show This year, the student council and the Lion's Club decided to donate the proceeds of the Talent Show to the Heart Fund instead of to the March of Dimes, as has been done in past years. The Juniors won the talent show and the drive, this year. In the tal- ent show the Seniors were second and the Sophomores and Freshmen tied for third place. There was great variety in this years talent show with each class entering one act in Instrumental, Vocal, Dramatic, and Dancing fields. Houston Martin was the master of ceremonies for the show and each class president went onto the stage after the performances to receive the trophy for the winning class. Here we see the junior swing band which help their class to come out on top in the talent show. Beverly Petersen plays The Cat and the Mouse for a Sophomore entry. Manager, Jess Negrete Varsity Basketball North Sequoia League Champions This year, Washington Union's Varsity Basketball Team put on the most startling performance of its career. The team defeated every team it faced in the practice games and won every league game, including the Dos Palos Tournament. At the conclusion of the season, Washington had a winning streak of 22 wins and no losses. This is indeed an astounding record for any ball club. The Panther’s always offered the fan's the best game for their money. Many times their passes, plays, and shots were unequaled by any team, college or high school. The members of this championship team deserve all the credit and praise that it is possible to give them. Also a great asset to the team was their coach, Don McDonald. The team's league standing was quite low; however, being in a new league might have had some bearing on this. The C team is composed of players too small to play B, but have the desire to play ball. The attendances at their games was hurt greatly because they played during football season. The kittens had regular after school practices, and usually played one game a week. Co-captains for the year were Gary Schmidt and Dennis Brewer. TEAM--T. Graham, D. Brewer, R. Santa Cruz, A. Pascoe, G. Schmidt, J. Montano, I. Dow. 88 D Basketball Like their bigger brothers, the C Squad, Washington Union’s D cagers also saw their first season in the newly formed league. Also, like the C's, the team was put to a handicap, and didn’t play their best brand of ball. Coach Richards remarked, Both the C and D squads deserve a big hand for their effort. They were a team with little support, but they always did their best. Co-captains for the year were Kelly Brown and Frank Hogue. CO-CAPTAINS—K. Brown, F. Hogue. TEAM--A. Simmons, L. Orosco, J. Seto, J. Lopez, B. Noble, F. Hogue, R. Brewer, M. Hendrix, K. Brown. 89 Coach, Bill Schulz Managers, D. Spradling, L. Seto Varsity Baseball This year, the Washington Baseball team put in a good season under the leadership of their new baseball coach. Bill Schulz. In the beginning, the powerful Panthers were hampered by poor weather conditions and many of their first games were postponed or called off. The varsity team was a relatively new team this year with only four returning letter- men from last year's squad. All in all the Panther Batters put in a commendable season. Managers of this years team were Don Spradling, sophomore, and Leroy Seto, senior. SQUAD—ROW 1: D. Hernandez, R. Rodiquez, L. Jacoby T. Negrete} J. Erby, J. Ferreira, C. Pearce, H. Arakawa. ROW 2: B. Baseball The Junior Varsity Baseball team, like the Varsity team, was also hampered by weather conditions this year. Even so, they turned out a praise-worthy season. The JV'S played most of their games at Cosmos's Playground, as the Varsity controlled the diamond here during home games. Managers of this year's JV Team were Tony Rodriquez, and Anthony Pepe. The managers of not only the baseball teams, but also all the other teams should be highly commended for the splendid job they do in assisting the coaches and taking care of the equipment. Here, a formal picture of the Junior Varsity Baseball Squad. Footbal Here, Cub player, Don Sprad- ling, is getting him down while halfback Leon Reid comes in to assist him. 92 It May Be ASCRAMBLE, but Washington's gotit! At least that's the case here in a league game with Dos Palos. Football Here, B Quarterback, Sarou- han, takes the ball, but is having a little trouble with a Fowler Tackier. Here, varsity Halfback, King Rhodes, takes the ball and goes all the way for a Washington Union touchdown in a game with SanJoaquin Memorial. 93 COACHES--E. Mendes, R. Springer. MANAGERS--W. Simpson, L. Moser. Track Washington's Panthers had a fairly successful season this year after a rather slow start because of the weather. On March 25. the Panther's played host to Sanger, Selma. Bullard, and Central in a give-way meet. Later in March the thinclads entered the Reedly Invitational Tournament. Many of the members of the Panther Squads were new this year, but the seasonal standing showed that this was not a serious disadvantage. This year’s track team was coached by Ray Springer, head Coach, and Ellery Mendes, a student teacher here at Washington. A TRACK SQUAD—ROW 1: C. Cooper, N. Mason, G. Glover, M. Btacomonte, H.
