No longer are the tensions and tragedies of war your immediate destiny. True, the young men who graduate may have to serve a year or more in the armed forces, but you will not need to look forward to com- bat on a battlefield, battleship or fighting plane. Nom that we are at peace, let us look momentarily at postwar America to see what is in store for you. As you know, during the war there was virtually a complete suspension in the building of homes and business structures, and the manufacture of practically all articles of heavy industry such as autos mobiles. farm machinery. refrigerators, etc. This cessation of production created an enormous backlog of demand for these products. VVe are just getting started back on the road to production. America has the purchasing power to buy the products of industry just as soon as they are available. This means that there will be expanding opportunities for employment as these products begin to flow into the market. These will provide jobs at good wages for all who wish to work. 'l'here will also be new jobs created to build the new products to make life more liveable. New homes with new convenien- ces will be built. New factories, new industries, even new cities will rise to build the myriad new pro- ducts of the post war world. New highways will be constructed and new airways will he charted to carry on the commerce of a productive, prosperous postwar America. ln short, an era of unprece- dented prosperity lies immediately ahead of us. The future for you looks brighter now than at any time in our history. America is truly the land of opportunity for the ambitious young man or woman. ln the foregoing paragraphs l have been speaking of materialistic developments. l also envision a renaissance of spiritual values and social progress XVith the fear of unemployment gone. with the hysteria of war removed, and with normal home life coming back into own again, I believe America will rise to new heights of economic prosperity, social security, and spiritual stability. Your future is bright, Class of lq-I-6, and may you make the most of your abilities as you leave these portals. Romain' IC. 'I'leasnl-er SENIQR lr was a happy but frightening day in the lives of many lfreshmen when they entered the doors of VVashington High, the first step on the long road that would lead many students through four years of' high school and many others through adventures and experiences they had never dreamed ex- isted. in the service of their country. - Not knowing the dark future that was ahead for so many but only pushing any unpleasant thoughts into the back of their minds, the lfreshman class fthe future graduates of '-lbj elected their class officers. Those elected were president, 'lim Peoples: vice-president. Charles liricksong secretary Catherine Steyer, and treasurer, Klerle Petersen. Under the excellent supervision of class sponsors. lvliss Jurgensen, lkliss Palmquist Know Mrs. Cochranl, and llr. Burnett the Freshman class finished their first year with only a few minor changes caused hy the horrible monster of war that had overrun the world. The Sobhomore Year for the class of '-l-O was not a year when they were scrubs and scared to death. but just another performance in the second ring of the circus called school. The class election was held and Nlerle Petersen was chosen president with Herbert llonabedian as vice-president: when Herbert moved to Fowler. his oflice was occupied by' Thom Thor. La Verne Seibert was elected sec- retary and the treasurer was Bette Ray. Boys and girls alike took part in school activities. Sophomore boys won second place in inter- class football and baseball and first place in basketball. 'lihe girls made a good showing in volleyball, basketball, and other inter-class sports. The year ended as all school years do with everybody happy to see summer and be free from class room work to enjoy it. FACULTY ADVISERS: Nliss Vioxx. Klrs. I'n-it-c. Xlr, ephens. Bliss llayis, LP' L Exzcurivs commrrrsz ERNEST FOOTE MIRIAM STEFFENSEN RICHARD SCIIWABPNI XXII CLASS QF 1946 At the beginning of the junior year the Class of '46 started ninety-one strong but as the year ad- vanced their numbers were decreased for various reasons with a great many boys leaving for the armed forces. Class officers were elected early in that year. Tom Thor was elected president and jim Peoples, vice-president. The secretary was Richard Hansen and the treasurer, Phyllis Pedersen. During the year the class presented its annual junior play, Slightly Deleriousu. Directed by Miss Davis, the play was a big success and it added a great deal of money to the class treasury to help in financing the Junior-Senior Banquet. . As a new system of intramural sports was introduced. there was no inrerclass competition for the boys that year. The year closed with the Junior-Senior Banquet a great success. Class members started the summer vacaition dreaming of next year when they would be the stars in the big ring in front of the reserved seat section. VVith the end of the war the future looked far brighter for graduating class members. President Lance Guynes, vice-president Jim Peoples, secretary Eileen johnson, and treasurer Helen Freitas were elected class officers. The class held its traditional Senior party at the Legion Hall. There were re- freshments and dancing afterward. Later Barbara Andersen was chosen May Queen for the first celebration of its kind at VV. U. H. S. since 1942. DRAM!-XTICS The dramatics activities of XVashington Union High School have been under the direction of Miss Lucy Davis. The first success was the delightful comedy. Our Girls , presented by the Junior class on De- cember 13 and l-l. lfrom the comments heard on opening night it was the finest play the .luniors have presented for many years. Heading the cast as mother and father were Nancy' lfyer and .loe Van Gundy. The play told of an old maid aunt. portrayed by Diana hlackersie, who had a strong dislike for boys. She failed to realize until the end of the play that her own daughter had been blessed with three of the hateful creatures as she aptly put it. The three boys were portrayed by Robert llalhgren. Herbert Jessen, and Ramon Nielsen. As in most plays. l'All ends well . The second success was attributed to the Senior class when they presented Feathers in a Gale in Nlay. The play called for unusual costumes as the setting was at Cap Cod. lt concerned three widows who were going to be sold at a YVidows' Vendueu because they could no longer support thcmselvesg the people of the town knew. if the widows were not sold for servants, they would have to be supported by the townspeople. SCIENCE CLUB At the beginning of its second year the Science Club outranked all other clubs in membership and started the year by electing Bob Sonneman as president and john Jorgensen as vice-president: Virgil lfischen, secretary: Patricia Boyd, treasurer. The club under the expert guidance of Mrs. Pierce used their meeting time for the study of scientific problems with experiments and the showing of scientific movies. The number of members enrolled in the Science Club proves that in this modern scientific world a great many students have keen interest in such problems. The club finished the year the presentation of club pins at a party where refreshments and enter- tainment were furnished to the members themselves. FUTURE FARMERS CDE AMERICA Realizing that farming is a science that takes study and preparation, fifty boys of W'ashington Union High School belong to the Future Farmers of America. At the end of four years they are ready to begin their life's work with a good knowledge of scien- tific farming, of the use of modern farm machinery, and of the keeping of accurate records, as well as the ability to find the most profitable markets for their produce. Une field trip was taken to Hanford, where the local boys competed with boys from twenty-six other schools in judging Aberdeen-Angus cattle. E. Vitali, T. Aust, R. Ataide, D. Rasmussen, and A. Nelson represented Washington and placed eleventh. Another field trip was taken to Madera to judge three classes of beef, two classes of hogs, and one class of sheep. On lllay Day the boys had a live stock show exhibiting many of their best animals. They also sponsored a similar show for the -l-H Clubs in the grammar schools. A good farmer doesn't believe in all work and no play, and so the boys gave an l .lf.A. dance on Nlarch 29.
