'Q -L- I ' I A ' I I ' I NM THE SOPHOMORE CLASS Wrth a long trarl st1ll ahead of them and wtth a l1ttle more experrence behrnd them the Sophomore Class took up the second lap of therr Journey October 22 1937 marked the date for the Sophomore Cotton Hop wh1ch was a cord and glngham affa1r The gym was decorated approprrately for the theme wlth balls of cotton lard among the greens Each person upon entermg the dance floor was presented Wllh a program decorated wlth g1ngham When the fmal hour of the dance approached everyone was regretful Thrs was the f1rst pro gram dance that had been held 1n a long trme and lt proved to be a great success The class s second undertakrng for the year was 1ts assembly program grven bers of the faculty and 1t was very amus1ng to the student body Every year 1t has been customary for the Sophomore class to take care of the museum case A chosen comm1ttee placed 1n the case mterestrng dlsplays on travel teaturmg artlcles from England Austral1a the F111 Islands and Alaska Another Sophomore duty IS decoratmg the halls and aud1tor1um for the Chrrst mas Pageant Thrs year s class used the tradmonal greens and candles but added a Nat1v1ty scene wh1ch was set up rn the trophy case The Sophomores showed excellent dramatlc talent They took part 1n and s.1bm1tted stunts for the Vodvrl and turmshed one ot the leads for the Student Body Play Many members of thrs class were also on the Hatchet Staff and rn the Scholarshlp Soclety 4222 l on April 22. STUDENT BCDDY PLAY Slightly Delirious Sligh ly Delirious a delightfully crazy comedy full ot amusing situations was given by students on October 27 l937 The colorful living room ot Mr Lister s seashore cottage is the scene for the entire play Mr Lister s romantic maid Maudie cmd the butler Huxley are interrupted during their work by a group of vacationers who excitedly bring in a stranger an unconscious young man named Algernon Angell whom they have Just rescued from drowning in the surf When Algernon regains consciousness the vacationers discover that he 1S suffering from amnesia and cannot remember his identity Some clothes are found on the beach and rt is concluded that they belong to Algy As a result he is mistaken for the wealthy Mr James Hathaway Cantelope Because of this everyone from then on does his best to impress the prominent man hoping for either social or f1!'lGI1ClGl aid Mrs Swayne who is always trying to rise socially tries to force him to propose to her daughter Stella Some Jewels are stolen and a pet frog Lulu belonging to Maudie the maid the original Algernon Angell arrives on the scene to add more confusion to this tast moving farce All the complications are finally cleared up and the play ends in a haDDY climax Mary Vrrginia Bristow as Maudte the Lister s maid played opposite William Silva who portrayed Huxley the butler Thelr acting kept the audience in a laughrng mood throughout the evening Iohn Ferrante as Algernon Angell the amnesia victim showed much dramatic talent lack Charters a more than a seaside vacationer was played by George Bonde Mrs Swayne was cleverly portrayed by Margaret Williamson Lesser roles were cleverly played by Lorraine Peterson as Mrs Swayne s daughter Stella Genevieve Andrade and Vermilda De Luce as Stella s friends Frances and Della Iirn Emerson and Delphine Ornellas as Mr and Mrs Lister at whose house the story takes place Iohn Ziegler and Elizabeth Lindsay as Mr and Mrs Henry Fellows Arch Sparrow as an umnvited guest whose stealthy move ments about the Lister s cottage offer exciting mystery Betty Denton played the part of Lulu Clayton and Peter Stark portrayed the plain clothes man who hnally solved the mystery The success of the play Slightly Delirious was largely due to the able airecting of Miss A Botelho Miss I Wilson and Miss S Botelho 436: disappears.
