Glass History The moment had arrived, our mothers were fixing that pigtail or adjusting that suspender, and giving us a kiss or a love pat. Some of us went down a long lane to catch the bus, while others paraded through town to get to the Washington Township School. We all proudly walked to the big entrance and entered with wide smiles or awesome looks in our eyes. We were surprised to find many other little schoolmates gathered together for the first day. It was early September, nineteen hundred and forty-nine, our first day of school, for thirteen of the present graduates. On Entering our room we were greeted by our teacher, Mrs. Smith. The first graders were: Patricia Overmyer, Daun Hetrick, Betty Wagner, Barbara Linker, Janet Nowak, Mary Roush, Sharon Humburg, Sandra Smith, Gilford Root, Allan Brindley, Thomas Auxter, John Mitchell, and Brice Overmyer. After nine months of hard work we became members of the second grade. In the second grade, Herbert Reed and Linda Crispen joined us, but we lost Tedd Munn, Connie Karr and Dennis Pasch. Our teacher was Mrs. Sand. She taught us a little more that year. Mrs. Sand also taught our third year. During that year, we lost Patricia McGravey, Michael Hess and Larry Maurer, but we gained Felipe Garcia, Sally Johnson, Faye Martin and Donald Smith. We all managed to pull through to the fourth grade, where Mrs. Hathaway continued to slave over us. By the end of the year, we gained Richard Baker and Gay Heart. We lost Marianne Root and Herbert Reed. We moved on to the fifth grade where Mrs. Hathaway was again our teacher. Dennis Hasselbach joined us. That year, Sally Johnson, and Donald Smith left us. Then we were passed on to the sixth grade. Our teacher was Mrs. Weikert. We had more studies that year. Richard Baker left us, but we gained Judy Hines. By this time we were old hands at this job of school and flew right through the seventh grade, but stopped long enough to pick up Phillip Hicks and to lose Phyllis Keck and Judy Hines. Our teacher was Mr. Solomon. In the fall of H56H we entered the eighth grade with both joy and sadness, for this would be our last year at Washington Township School. AS we entered the school we greeted two new faces, Bernard Ladd and Robert Hartzel. Two weeks later we greeted another new schoolmate Gary Yoder. We lost only one person this year, Eva DeLeon. As the twenty-one of us are graduating this spring, we will always look back and think of those eight past happy years at Washington Township School.
