All we are we owe to them. These debts will 'be amply paid by the de- velopment of good character, the assumption of our share of civic responsibilities, our demonstration of love of God and Country and the constant appre- hension of those heritages which have made America great. Cnr parents and associates will always feel proud of our achievements as we take our positions as adult American citizens. At least once a month evening meetings are held, and occasional ones are included in the regular day-time schedule. CHEERLEADERS Captain -- Bonnie Welty This year's cheerleading squad was composed of eight cheerleaders, all girls. Dressed in attractive uniforms bearing the school's colors, maroon and gray, they did a splendid job of cheering the football team on to its third consecutive championship. They also did a superb job of boosting morale at both the girls' and boys' basketball games. The cheerleaders often deserve much more praise than they get. The girls gave up many of their afternoons to practice cheers and faithfully attend- ed all the athletic contests to cheer the team on to victories which might have been losses but for the moral supplied by the cheerleaders. Mr. Rankin has done a splendid job of instructing these students in the careful handling of a cu 'md in knowing the many rules of driving. I-Ie has great patience with and confidence in his students. Baer. .IUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BUS PATROL An organization of the Junior High School which serves its school and fellow students every school day is the Bus Patrol. Since the transportation of pupils to and from school is an important phase of our school life, the bus safety patrols provide valuable assistance in this program by aiding the driver in the safe operation of the bus, and in developing and maintain- ing a sound behavior code for the bus. These patrols help by maintaining orderly conduct, and by preventing accidents to the riders while on the bus, or when boarding, leaving, or crossing roadways. This organization also provides excellent opportunity for developing leadership qualities in Junior High School students. Members of the Bus Patrol should develop such traits as pupil responsibility, self-control, clean conduct, ideals of citizenship, and moral character. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of accidents and 'behavior problems rather than on their correction and treatment. BULLDOGS TAKE OPENER 38-6 The Bulldogs opened their 1953 football campaign on September 23, with a decisive 38-6 victory over Susquehannock Joint High School. The game was held at home before approximately 500 fans. Tink Pentz lead the attack with 5 touchdowns, one on a pass interception, one on a recovered fumble and runs of 76, 68, and 8 yards. The entire team was pressed into action. Coach Brady commented that the Bulldogs played a pretty sloppy game and will need much improvement to retain the championship. W. T. H. BULLDOGS DEFEAT WEST YORK 34-0 On September 26, the Bulldogs traveled to West York and returned home with their second league victory, a 34-O decision of the West York lads. Tink Pentz continued his touchdown spree with 2 tallies before he was removed from the game in the third period with a badly injured knee. Link Shank turned in a sterling job ot quarter back while Gary Yogi Ulrich showed signs of good things to come with two touchdowns in the second half. BULLDOGS DEFEAT LITTLESTOWN FOR THIRD WIN On October 10, the Bulldogs entertained the Littlestown Thunderbolts and had them- selves a field day, scoring a 49-13 victory. Coach Brady, in a effort to rest the boys for the coming Shippensburg game, started the second string and Littlestown immediately took a 6-O lead, which they held throughout the first period. However, in the second period, with the first team back into play, the Bulldogs scored ZS points to take a commanding lead at half-time. Gary Ulrich scored first on a 72 yard scamper and Barry Berklite intercepted a Thunderbolt pass and scored from the 30 and put the Bulldogs out in front to stay. Follow- ing the kickoff, Royer blocked a Littlestown punt and Bob Minnich fell on the oval in the :end zone for the score and converted for the 3rd of 7 extra points for the day, a perfect afternoon. The final score of the period came when Ulrich passed to Berklite in the end zone. Early in the 3rd period, Ulrich raced 70 yards for his second touchdown of the day. Galen Mentzer intercepted a pass in the fourth period and ran 85 yards to pay dirt. Harry Monn closed the scoring in the fourth period with a 35 yard jaunt around right end. BULLDOGS WALLOP SHIPPENSBURG 38-6 Outclassing completely their South Penn Rivals, the Bulldogs put on a tremendous display of offense power on Saturday afternoon, October 24, and swamped Shippensburg Area High School, 38-6. Gary Ulrich was the big gun for Brady's men as he churned out 207 yards in 12 carries and had touchdown runs of 65, 45, and 31 yards. Harry Monn, who did a wonderful job filling in for Tink Pentz scored once and averaged 7M yards per try. Both coaches emptied their benches in the final period and the Bulldogs scoring orgy continued as two touchdowns were scored by the second string. BULLDOGS NIP DALLASTOWN 27-20 A fifteen yard pass from Gary Ulrich to Barry Berklite late in the fourth period at Dallastown High School on Saturday, Oct. 17, earned the Bulldogs a hard fought 27-20 victory. It was the fifth straight win and assured the dogs of a tie for the conference title. However at one time in the third period the Bulldogs trailed 20-14 as the Wildcats of Dallastown were the first team to offer respectable competition for the Bradymen. It may have been a costly victory as Tom Hudson, star left guard absorbed a painful injury to his knee. Dallastown jumped to an early 7 points lead as they turned Don Royer's fumble into a score. However, Royer evened the count with a 98 yard jaunt late in the same period behind excellent downfield blocking. Minnich converted to tie the score. Gary Ulrich intercepted a Wilclcat pass in the 2nd period and raced S0 yards for the score. Minnich then made the count 14, with his Znd conversion of the day. After Dallastown scored twice in the third period to forge ahead 20-14, Big Don Royer spearheaded a 65 yard drive and scored to tie the count 20 all where it remained until late in the 4th period when Ulrich hit Berklite in the end zone with a pass for the winning touchdown. The Bulldogs coasted to their sixth straight win, on October 24, by swamping the Orbisoma Bisons 44-7 in a non-conference game. The whole team saw action while Coach Brady made ball carriers of thirteen men. n G'ary Ulrich scored 2 of 3 times he got his hands on the ball, as he ran back a pass interception 45 yards for one and scored from twelve yards out for the other. Harry Monn scored first in the opening periods to start the teede parade for the Bulldogs. ln the second period, Ron Manahan dropped back from guard to halfback and bulled over from the two yard line for our fourth score of the game. Paul Stevenson scored on an end around play in period 3, followed by a similar play by tackle Barney Barnhart. , Howard Sheely completed the scoring for the day as he ripped through the Orbisonia middle for 60 yards. BULLDOGS TRAMPLE KENNARD-DALE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP 34-7 The Bulldogs copped the Laurel Conference championship for the third consecutive year by defeating Kennard Dale, 34-7 on the latters field. Gary Ulrich led the attack with 3 touchdowns as Barry Berklite and Harry Monn also scored. On the first play of the game Barney Barnhart, who played headsup ball all season, covered a Kennard Dale fumble on the 20 yard line and two plays later, '4Yogi Ulrich scored from the 1 yard line. Harry Monn scored on a line- buck in the second period and from there on it was easy, with Gary Ulrich also scoring in the 2nd period. After 4 minutes of the second half had elapsed, Gary Ulrich scored his 3rd touch- down of the day from 35 yards out. In the last period, Paul Stevenson caught Link Shank's pass on the 50, ran it to the 20 where he dropped the ball, however, Berklite scooped it up and ran the rest of the way for the Bulldog's final score. SCOTLAND DOWNS BULLDOGS FOR FIRST LOSS An inspired band of Scotland School Cadets upset the Bulldogs O11 Monday after- noon, Nov. 9, on the former's field. The Cadets were hepped up by the surprise return to their lineup of their star half- back, Luther Burns, who suffered a finger amputation the previous week. However, they needed a crazy, unexplainable bounce of the pigskin in the fourth period to pave the way to a 20-14 victory. The Bulldogs led in every department but the final score including fumbles, which is probably why we lost. Berklite and Pentz scored in vain attempt for the K-9's. W. T. H. BULLDOGS TROUNCE BIGLERVILLE 33-0 On Thursday, November 12, with only three days rest, the Bulldogs traveled to Biglerville and walloped the Canners, 33-0 in the final contest of the year. The dogs were led by Tink Pentz and Don Royer, with each picking off 106 yards, Royer scored twice and Pentz, Stevenson and Barnhart each scored once. It marked the final High School football game for some ten seniors including all conference end, Paul Stevenson, all conference tackle Barney Barnhart, tackle Bob Toe Minnich, guard, Tom Hudson, all conference guard, Ron Manahan, all conference center, Galen Mentzer, all conference quarterback, Link Shank, halfback, Gary Ulrich, all con- ference halfback, Tink Pentz and fullback Don Royer. TO THE BOOSTER CLUB The Washington Township Booster Club presented the football team with new uniforms, a quantity of new helmets and pads, and all new and re- conditioned shoes. The team feels that the Illooster Club is largely responsible for the fine season due to the fact that they clothed the team with best equipment and thus held injuries to an extreme minimum. The Bulldogs, therefore, extend their warmest appreciation to the efforts of the Booster Club.
