PRESIDENT FRENCH l Tf ftS As they leave Washington State University after fourteen and a half years of service, President and Mrs. C. Clement French are leaving behind more than two names carved in a wall. Together they have watched the University grow from 4,500 students to near- ly 10,000 and have seen as a con- sequence the addition of twelve new dormitories, five dining halls, and two dozen other buildings or major additions. A few of the highlights of French ' s presidency include the inaugura- tion of a university-wide, integrat- ed honors program; growth in size and prestige of the graduate pro- gram; activation of the first major research nuclear reactor on a west- ern campus; and the institution of an intercollegiate exchange pro- gram with the University of the Punjab and later the selection of WSU by the governor of Pakistan and the United States Agency for International Development to provide high-level advice and as- sistance to the new West Pakistan Agricultural University. The new administration building, scheduled to be completed by 1967, will be named in honor of President French. This couple has never been too busy to appear at campus events. President French has always lis- tened to student opinion and has never been too busy to talk to stu- dents who have sought his coun- sel. President and Mrs. French leave behind not only tangible evidence of their years at Washington State University, but a memory in the hearts of students they have served. It is to them that we wish to dedi- cate this 1966 Chinook.
