President French As Washington State University ap- proaches the completion of 75 years of service to the people of its State, it can look with pride upon the steady improve- ment in its stature and in the quality of its program. The State of Washington is seeing the same major increasein enroll- ment which the country as a whole observes. Careful planning and diHerenti- ation of function is necessary if each of the institutions offering post high school education is to play its part in the most effective way. We are fortunate in Washington that the people, through our representatives in the Legislature, have given a high level of support to education in general and to higher education in particular. To merit this confidence, we must continue to improve our program and, in the wise expenditure of the in- creasing sums given to the University, justify the confidence which the people of the State have placed in us. This is our constant effort. Consultations are a necessary part of the administrative routine. The important signature is placed on a business reply letter. 18
