President French Washington State University is ap- proaching its 75th Birthday. During this period of service to all the people of the State of Washington, it has grown steadi- ly in stature and in recognition. As part of the general pattern of higher education in this State, Washing- ton State University is taking an increas- ingly important role in the conduct of upper-level and graduate work. This is consistent with the emerging pattern of higher education in Washington. The support which has been given to Washington State University, particularly during the last decade, has made possible rapid advances, both in facilities and in the development of an excellent faculty and staff. With such backing, we have no excuse for not advancing to the level of attainment expected of us by the people of the State of Washington. I am con- fident that, as we have done well in the past, we will do much better in the years ahead. C.
