Governor Rosellini converses with visitors during Homecoming activities. Governor Rosellini In this decade, the State of Washington will take immense strides toward realization of its tremendous growth and potential. This poten- tial can never be maintained, unless this state has an outstanding higher education system. To that end, Washington State University must be geared in staff and facilities to provide leadership to meet the challenges such devel- opment brings. The people of this state will accept the responsibility to provide support for our educational institutions. They have demon- strated this by providing through legislative appropriations and bond issues in the first five years of this administration nearly $23 million in building funds for Washington State University. This support will insure that the University will play an ever-increasing role in advancing the development of our State and the Northwest. Albert D. RosELLi fi Governor 22

President French Washington State University is ap- proaching its 75th Birthday. During this period of service to all the people of the State of Washington, it has grown steadi- ly in stature and in recognition. As part of the general pattern of higher education in this State, Washing- ton State University is taking an increas- ingly important role in the conduct of upper-level and graduate work. This is consistent with the emerging pattern of higher education in Washington. The support which has been given to Washington State University, particularly during the last decade, has made possible rapid advances, both in facilities and in the development of an excellent faculty and staff. With such backing, we have no excuse for not advancing to the level of attainment expected of us by the people of the State of Washington. I am con- fident that, as we have done well in the past, we will do much better in the years ahead. C. Clement French President President and Mrs. French spend an evening enjoying music in their home. Free time is scarce for the active couple. 24
