T the and argfi President C. Clement French Strangers to the Northwest, Dr. and Mrs. French got a taste of gsouthern hospitality' at the student welcoming rally held soon after their arrival on campus. Dr. French met countless students and faculty members per- sonally during his first weeks in office. His busy schedule included receptions, welcome addresses to the spring term's seemingly end- less conventions, regents, meetings, and most memorable of all, casual campus appear- ances. Bringing with him an outstanding rep- utation in college administration, WSC's new president had most recently been vice-presi- dent and dean of Texas A 8 M, and preceding that post, dean for many years at Randolph Macon Womanis college, Lynchburg, Vir- ginia. With never a hesitation of his southern drawl, Dr. French took over the direction of one of the Northwestis centers of education. 23 Acting President William A. Pearl Leaving his regular position as director of WSC's Institute of Technology in August, Dr. William A. Pearl became acting president of the State college-a position he filled until April 15. Dr. Pearl keynoted his term of office at the year's first faculty meeting in saying that he looked for college expansion during the coming year and not merely existence. His welcome to the year's surprisingly large freshman class-his appearance in WSC's first homecoming parade, bore out his hopes of college growth. Dr. Pearl is a familiar Pullman figure, having taken two degrees at the State college and a member of the faculty from 1916-1925, then going to Portland, Ore- gon, and Chicago for industrial and educa- tional work. He returned to his Alma Mater in 1946.
