The act for establishing the State College was passed March 9th, 1890; hut it was not until January, 1902, that the College was opened with Dr. Lilly at its head. President Heston was the incum¬ bent of the presidency during the disastrous year of 1893; but when the hoard of regents was reorganized. Dr. Ikyan was called to the presidency, and under his able guidance the College has grown and prospered through good times, and had times, in a marvelous man¬ ner. The College has grown from one building, with a mere hand- GOLLEGE HALL ful of students, to an educational establishment with over 600 stu¬ dents, who pursue their chosen branch of study in the halls and lab¬ oratories of nine modern, well equipped buildings; and the strug¬ gling “Pen” College of the last decade is now the educational insti¬ tution of the Northwest, with its corps of graduates scattered from the balmy South Sea islands to the wind beaten plains of Dakota. 11
