In another day we shall have realized the goal for which We have striven. With this in sight there dawns upon us the ' realization that our ambitions are not yet ' realized. The exultation of this hour is dimmed by the thought that tomorrow an- other objective awaits us. Tonight we real- ' - ize that the reward of four years of labor , 1 does not mean simply a roll of parchment. This diploma is the mere representation of the days. the weeks, the months which have : gl:-.,..,,:5:g.9i U , woven a fine tapestry which will form the -,-'Qi - Lg f K background of our lives. Perhaps at times ll ,W the pattern seemed drab, but running - I ' -e U G1 x.-'fig l K through the completed work there shines a golden thread-a thread that perhaps all un- wittingly the shuttle wove: yet it is there. How it gleamsl How proud we are of it! This thread woven among the threads of monotonous, commonplace duties is the golden thread of an ideal. As we stand here on the threshold of the future, what shall be our great objective? Shall we be satisfied with that which requires no effort at all, or shall it be said of us as it was said of Daniel of old, He purposed in his heart ? Let us work toward our ideals, and life will never be a failure: for ideals are the very essence of successful living. Ideals have been the foundation of all worth- while accomplishments. If we look back at the beginning of all the great in- stitutions of our country. even as far back as the beginning of our great nation. we will End an ideal. Now with our future so bright, shall we not try to at- tain through a life of untiring service, that satisfaction which comes only with the realization of an ideal achieved? And now may I say a word to our Faculty, through whose untiring ef- forts we have been brought this far on our journey of life? I speak for every girl here. You, our teachers, have given us of your very selves. We are leaving you with the hope that you will remember us at our best. I can not express the deep gratitude and respect which we feel toward you! To my classmates also I would say a word. I do not wish to say Good- bye, I hope that our paths will not be far apart and that tonight will be the beginning of more joys and success for you. Let us look upon tomorrow with renewed interest and zeal. Let us take pride in the realization that We are graduates of Washington Seminary, our Alma Mater, which we have loved and respected in the past and to which we hope to give honor in the future. ugfql ss' apfrl X X ' f 1 'Q N ' - 2 We IQ if 1 X X Z2 ,-i-i--u- -- N C O 0 Class History There is a picture I should like to throw on your mental screen. Your Humble Classmate First let me picture to you one lone little girl, whose name for modesty's sake will be omitted, who out of the whole class of '27 started her career on the sand piles of the kindergarten, making red and gold paper chains, building blocks, and cutting paper dolls. But the chains could not hold us there long. Our picture changes to that of wild excitement: the sand is blowing away, the paper dollies dance madly around the floor and dash headlong into the waste- paper basket, the blocks tumble down, and the paper links of the chains break. for we must go into the real seat of learning, Mrs. Cantey's room. Our imaginary reel grinds on and in the fourth grade throws on the screen a little chubby brown-eyed girl, our beloved Catharine Norcross, who has grown clearer to us every year and who today as we graduate stands with us as president of our class. Next the scene changes to one of brilliant hue as Betty Davison comes into our midst with her colorful Titian locks. Here we are under the loving super- vision of Miss Kathleen Colley, who helped us prepare the foundation on which we stand today. The reel turns on and shows us on the threshold of Miss Annie M. Sharpe's room, where we spent our seventh, eighth, and Freshman class years 5- ll if Ss 'U xi i Fai' N 'i i 2 1' a l ' uma YC, C? ' ny ? e an 'Q' l-lere we were joined by Mary Bayley, Helen Wilson, and the inseparables, Charlotte Burnett and Kathryn Lindner. We learned under Miss Sharpe the real value of true study and have her to thank for patient work and untiring efforts. We now can appreciate also the worth of the eighth grade that at the time of its introduction brought such gloom into our lives, putting off for still one more year. graduation. We are loathe now to leave the sunshine picture of Freshman Hall, but We must ascend the stairs to complete the rounds of high school life. Time flies by, and step by step we are rapidly reaching our goal. Beauty and strength of character complete the setting of the Junior class when Carolyn Leonard and Dorothy Strangward came to us out of the peach blossom belt of Georgia hand in hand with Isabelle Carpenter, Margaret Collier, Virginia Crus- selle. Vera Smith, and Ruth Whiddon. We have now reached the zenith of our high school hopes and afrnbitions, and the Senior class picture is completed With the addition of Wilhelrnine Win- erich. Shirley Cartin, Evelyn Collins, Mary Jo Evans, Margaret Huffine, Mar- ian Newell, Natalie de Golian, Annie Frances Humphries, Winifred Parsons, Sarah Roberts, and Marie Rowland, who have added much to the already at- tractive group that forms the class of '27. We are rapidly approaching the end of the reel. All pictures end with they all lived happily ever after, but this picture ends only our happy days at Washington Seminary. This separation brings sadness to our hearts, so to end this picture properly we will just turn over a page and let the magic pen of our prophet picture the ever after. -ADELINE WINSTON. tj x i 'WE Qlffl Y , M214 xg D3 , xl 27 X . fir . x . What is it about, I-Iepsibah? Q 0:4-2 an 'Ao , Well, last night when you went to your N-a 53 G' QQMW' lodge meeting, I went up to the attic to visit Uncle Percival and Aunt Minerva. The attic was dark and still and cold. I shivered. At that moment a pool of green light appeared in the center of the room. It flickered, flickered, glimmered, and glowed, and then disappeared. Again it appeared, at first dimly: then it grew brighter and brighter, and greener. In the center sat a horrible hob-gob- lin. I-Ie grinned, bared his yellow teeth, crammed his green turban farther over one horn, put his hands in his huge, purple pockets, flapped his glittering wings, and sneezed. The pool grew larger, larger, and suddenly, oh so suddenly. a change took place. I stared amazed, for in the middle of the pool I saw the seal of the Semi- nary, with the motto, Lux et Veritas, written across it. The seal grew larger and brighter, and brighter and larger, and then, then the goblin waved his clawey, parchment-like hands and said in deep, rusty tones, 5'My! My! My! And then I saw marvelous things reflected on the Seal. There was Adeline Winston, reigning queen of the Mardi Gras, with llj X C524 Q C7 is if I 27 ffl nuff, X l e , , - - - . X ATI t , O aa cr N ' Catharine Norcross and Carolyn Leonard as her two maids. Carolyn, Cathar- ine, and Adeline have all become famous society belles, noted equally for their wit and beauty. In the glimmer of the light I beheld Wilhelmine Winerich on a big black horse. She was throwing a lasso and shouting wildly. Wilhelmine has be- come famous on the silver screen. She always plays in western pictures as they give her a chance to get rid of some of her surplus energy UD. The scene changed to a day at the Capital. Down the street rushed a vivid, green racer at break neck speed. At the wheel sat Catherine I-Iowell. Be- side her was Dorothy Strangward. Catherine was rushing to the senate to veto a bill forbidding women to wear high-heeled shoes. Dorothy, I learned, was Vice-President. Just think of having a Vice-President of the United States from the class of twenty-seven. Next I saw Charlotte Burnett and Kathryn Lindner in a large insurance office. They are famous insurance agents and are still as inseparable as ever. They both insist on going to the same place to collect, and thus have to split the money between them. This scene faded out and I saw a famous peanut butter factory with a blazing sign: Mary Bayley's Famous Peanut Butter. It's guaranteed to make you thin. Grow thin while you eat. Mary gained her knowledge of cook- ing in the domestic science class at the Seminary, no doubt. Evelyn Collins has at last achieved success. She is the poet of her age, and has immortalized Virginia Crusselle in the famous song, She Never Let Things Worry Her. Margaret Collier, after studying art at the Seminary, has thrown her won- derful talent to the winds. Alas, she is to become the bride of a famous under- taker in New York City. Again the scene faded and I saw Mary Jo Evans, a famous piano player with Ringling Brothers Circus. She plays for Annie Frances Humphries to do her famous tight rope dance. I saw next an opening night in opera in New York. The opera was Car- men and the leading role was taken by Shirlio Cartino, who was no other than our own Shirley Cartin. Alas for Shirley! Just as she was about to finish tri- umphantly she hit a high note and her voice cracked like a broken plate. In spite of this calamity, however, the critics praised Shirley lavishly. They said that her poise was wonderful. I saw a traffic cop arresting a lady for jay walking: I looked closer. The .,-,gn I g MQ X 'gig Ulf mx' I - i' X 1 . 2 . f' E' ' ' Q f .Tia A 6 . jf! .. anon- - Y ' Q 2 K -4 'ig cop was Natalie De Golian and she was arresting Winifred Parsons. Winifred had much to say in protest. Hot Springs was the next scene. Here Sarah Robertsand Marie Rowland were completing their study of bugs and insects. Here also I saw Ruth Whid- den, a snake charmer in a small circus. She had perfect control over the rep- tiles. The next to appear was Vera Smith who was married and was taking her insignificant husband to a political meeting. Vera has become a famous poli- tician. She stopped to listen to a Woman standing on a large box, and talking in a high excited manner. The woman was Isabelle Carpenter and her sub- ject was, Now that women have the vote, why don't they use it? The picture faded and the miracle was at an end. The goblin stood up. scratched his chin, and sneezed. Then he gave a hollow, mocking laugh. Smoke gathered and the goblin rose up, up. up through the ceiling to nothing- ness. I was frightened stiff. All thought of visiting Aunt Minerva left my mind. I ran down the attic steps and back here as fast as I could. My dear, I was certainly scared to death. My dear I-Iepzibah. do you expect me to believe all of that? laughed Mr. Rat. You were surely dreaming. Dreaming? The idea! snorted his wife. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bam! A big black cat sprang over an overturned crock, but she was too late. Scamper. scamper, patter, patter, patter, echoed the feet of Mr. and Mrs. Rat. Too bad, sighed Kitty, but I'll get them next time. ISABELLE CARPENTER. , V Q cliff, Ko nh ? i - l ll, :gag swf' N ' - 3 V I 5 X x . 'I I V f fl - - IIQAQ D n ' I I . The Passing of the Brownstone Front The last few years have seen a great change come over that old street of streets. Famed in song and story, Peachtree Street is known throughout the world. But the constant drive of the hammer and the piercing sound of the electric drill bring to mind that the old fashionable Peachtree of the gay nineties is fast becoming a bustling commercial center. One by one the old brownstone houses are being torn down and replaced by skyscrapers. These houses were the pride of the town and the center of the social life of Atlanta, The iron deer that disported themselves over the lawn were the sign of social superiority. These houses of many-turreted arches and porte-cocheres were a wonder to behold, The black walnut stairs and stained glass windows from which often floated strains of I Dreamt that l Dwelt in Marble Halls are the horror of modern architects. But for all that they are the symbol of gay, happy days, when flappers were young ladies embroidering daisies, cattails, and peacock feathers on plush throws for the mantel, and prac- ticing the genteel art of fainting. Those were the days of parlors filled with horse hair furniture, family albums, and marble topped tables. Young gentlemen of the day were wont to haunt the windows of their be- loved, sending forth heartrending melodies of Sweet Adeline. The younger generation often indulged in a strenuous game of Croquet, or, Well chap- eroned, danced the polka, or if very daring, waltzed to the strains of the Blue Danube. The Walls of the ghostly old houses echoed with a happy gaiety that we of this hectic day can never experience.
