g . x MEMORIAM And DEDICATIO Sam Rowlett Bologna As a fitting memorial to his perceptive mind and dauntless courage, the Sabre Staff would like to present a theme that Sam wrote at age 16 as a classroom project. Why I Believe in Immortality The state of being exempt from death or the ability to live forever is far beyond the realm of comprehension for the human mind . The word forever in itself, is very thought-provokin. It implies living on, day after day, year after year - never dying. What could one possibly do during all that time? The reason I believe in immortality is strictly a matter of faith. I am merely a man, capable of under- standing only those matters which my mind can understand. Therefore, for the answer to the question of immortality, I must resort to something greater than a mind - a Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God. In God's life on earth. He proclaimed that after death of a person's body, the spirit within that body would have eternal life, but only if that person had believed in God and in Christ. Since I have complete confidence that God's promises will be kept, I have the basis for my belief in immortality. However, the fact that we can have immortality is all we know on this subject. What I would like to know about immortality is how all of eternity will be spent. Will we have a goal to reach or an assignment to carry out? Will we be able to observe humans making fools of themselves, or maybe have a say-so in the outcome of human events? The only way to be certain about these things is to die, and then it is too late to relate to others. I believe that a person has a purpose in life, and if he fulfills that purpose, he will receive immortality. I, also, believe that God is the only One who can give immortality. Therefore , my goal is to recognize my pur- pose in life. This I can do only with the guidance of God.
