J-V program provides game experience JUNIOR VARSITY. BACK: Skip Foster, Jim Griese, Russ Schroeder, Van Dyke, and Dave Ewers. FRONT ROW: Art Simmons, Ralph Tonis Mang, and Lance King lMgr.l. A DRASTIC INCREASE in the number of upper- classmen out for varsity football this past season made it possible to return to the practice of operat- ing a Junior Varsity unit separate from the squad from which those playing in varsity competition were drawn. A schedule of games was arranged and a large number of boys were given opportunity to play under game conditions that readied them for senior varsity play in l959. STOPPED AFTER A SHORT GAIN, a Madison West back is brought down by two tack- lers, with four more Park de- fenders converging an the play. WITH ONE OF ITS BEST football teams ever, Park went undefeated in conference play to win its first Big-8 grid title since I939. It was the Panthers third such championship. The only loss was in the opening game with North Chicago, and the Illinois eleven was playing its second game. Park dominated in most respects except scoring. 'Non-conference the harriers The runners lost twice to Horlick, 34-Qi and 3l-24, placed third in a quad- rangular, placed third in two triangular meets, and ran 7th in the Lakeshore, l3th in the Midwest, 4th in the Big-8, and llth in the State cross-country meets. SOPHOMORES PLAY in a league composed of elements of the Big Eight. The Lakeshore and Madison member schools do not play with each other because of travel expenses, but each has games with Beloit and Janes- vilie. Park plays its nearby rivals, Kenosha and Horlick twice. Thus the lOth graders get an opportunity to compete with boys T their own age. Occasionally sophomores are promoted to the varsity squads as the season progresses.
