We will never forget the routine of classes, the excitement of those important games, the thrill of the dances, the hours of homework, the loyal friendships, and the helping hands of our teachers and advisors. All have contributed to our development in the tradition of American education. In this book we hope to help you recall both the important events and the side- lights that have made the school year memorable . . . and to picture your class- mates as they were in 1958-59. .J , , ff f,, va .f if ggi' MK A Hz A 47 Q Li Table of Contents Sta 7 Autumn 21 Sp ts Winter 57 Spring 83 S t In ex 'l'l7 Sttf Og t Administration Teachers Q Services i Organizations or Activities Organizations A 5 A Sports ' A i Activities r . Mr. Close spends some of his time as Co-Rec and as Student Council advisor. Then, it he possibly has a spare minute, he spends that with his hobbies, photography and carpentry. The Park High faculty extends its con- gratulations to all graduating seniors. We take pride in having had a part in your preparation tor the adult respon- sibilities which lie ahead. Mr. Leander Berven, Don's science teacher, describes him as having a very good grasp of science, for Don has read and studied widely in areas of science and math that carry him tar from the usual fields of student exploration, He made use of acceleration in math to work in a semester of typing. Last year, Don built a logic machine and entered it in the state science fair. The idea of the machine is to sort out information on a problem and decide whether the conclusion is logical or not, The invention received honorable mention. His science interests also take a practical turn - he has installed wiring in at least one house . . . and anticipated all unusual needs for years to come. Tonis has also won his letters in football and basketball. Originally from Estonia, Tonis moved with his family to the U.S, from Germany in l95O. DENNIS KOMMER, although incapacltated with a leg iniury as a sophomore, was recognized as a corner by his coaches, This year, with instruction such as that given by Coach Donald Gard' ner in baslcetball, h's talents are be ng fully developed, Top per- formances in several sports are anticipated from him in his senior year. 15 --.uma Student specialists SANDY KRYNICK and KATlE GORDON are both 'well known at Park in the held at girls' sports Katie has partkirnated in G A A ard is the cap- tain of an intramural girls' basketball team. But her ability to say in a few words what others would take paragraphs to express, her gift of creative expression, has not been de- veloped without great individual effort and some special coaching. Mrs. MARSHA WILDER, who will become a permanent member oi our teaching staff next fall, is an old hana at teaching English at Pork. During the second semester last year she took over for Miss Therese Sharpf and this year did the same for Miss Ethel Holt when she retired in midyear. Mrs, Wilder received her degree in education at the University of Oho She plans to continue her studies to get her masters degree. Her cheerful smile and always ready to help attitude are several pants that make Mrs. Wilder o popular teacher. Anyone who has had her will vouch for the fact that she makes any phase of Eng, lish easy and fun to learn. 1 kk Mrs. DELIA FORNES started working in our cafeteria iust before second semester. What foods these morsels be MARY MAITLAND is mixing up her favorite recipe, banana bread, This, however, is not her only claim to tame in home ec. She does a Une iob preparing an entire meal, Mary also makes many of her own clothes Last year sl'ie turned out an entire outfit complete with hat and purse, Mary plans a career in home economics and her excellent grades point to a bright future. WITH ONE OF ITS BEST football teams ever, Park went undefeated in conference play to win its first Big-8 grid title since I939. It was the Panthers third such championship. The only loss was in the opening game with North Chicago, and the Illinois eleven was playing its second game. Park dominated in most respects except scoring. A DRASTIC INCREASE in the number of upper- classmen out for varsity football this past season made it possible to return to the practice of operat- ing a Junior Varsity unit separate from the squad from which those playing in varsity competition were drawn. A schedule of games was arranged and a large number of boys were given opportunity to play under game conditions that readied them for senior varsity play in l959. SOPHOMORES PLAY in a league composed of elements of the Big Eight. The Lakeshore and Madison member schools do not play with each other because of travel expenses, but each has games with Beloit and Janes- vilie. Park plays its nearby rivals, Kenosha and Horlick twice. Thus the lOth graders get an opportunity to compete with boys T their own age. Occasionally sophomores are promoted to the varsity squads as the season progresses. Physical education . . . . . . fall program ATTENTION MAY BE FOCUSED on election of cheerleaders, success of the football team, and or- ganization of Orchesis as September rolls around, but for Park girls this also is the season for speed- a-way and held hockey. Sophomores play speed-a-way, a version of field hockey that employs slightly different equipment and simplified rules. Junior and senior girls in gym classes play field hockey, until the weather turns. Seniors usually go indoors earlier than underclass- men, not because they are less hardy, but because badminton is reserved for them. Since gym space is limited, only a few have room to play with the birdie SPEED-A-WAY PLAYERS at this particular point seem to have neglected to remember what part the ball plays in the prog- ress of the game. Q STICKS FLY! See why the girls need shin guards? KIPI STAFF MEMBERS Ann Docter, Ann Newman, Kathy Powers, and Vicki Hansen, and an eager helper, Bill Tigges, take time-out while assisting with taking club pictures for this year's annual. TIME OUT FOR GlNGER, this year's all-school play, was pre- sented on November I4 and i5 in the Mitchell Junior High School auditorium. This was a change from last year's schedule, since that production was given in the spring. Cost for the play included CUPPER LEFTJ Standing: Bob Par- rish, Mr. Wilson, Richard Norman, Ed Hoftman, Helen Karch, Liz- zie the maid, William Olson, Eddie Davis, and Miche Priaulx, Tammy Green. As a service organization, the members produce many materials needed in the operation ot the school and in the promotion ot school activities: tickets for school dances, report torms, readmit- tance slips, personal memo pads for teachers, and similar items. A project to which members de- voted much time was a Christmas card original by Mike Monroe '58 reproduced by silk screen pro- cess tor Dr. Ernest Lake, Superintendent ot Schools. As has been their custom for many years, the Wrong Fonters again this year used their funds to purchase a piece ot printing equipment tor the school. In this case, it was a goldplating machine, being used this spring to imprint the names ot individual students on the covers ot their year- books. This year twenty-one finalists sought to be among the thirteen picked to represent our school. Under the direction of Miss Donna Jones and Cap- tain Gail Johnson, the cheerleaders meet every Thursday night in the gym where they practice old routines and work out and learn new cheers. During the tall the cheerleaders held a sale of homemade cakes to raise money for new uniforms. ln the recent spring carnival, arrangements for rental ot gym equipment were made so that carnival goers for a small sum of money could use these materials in the girls' gym. Prior to winning the state title, the same four players had contributed to a squad record of 14 straight wins in dual contests, 4 I Winning the State Golf Championship brought to a conclusion a most outstand- ing golf season. The Panther foursome beat out Green Bay East by nine strokes to take top honors in the state, the third state Golf Championship that Park has won. Dick Wells, with a 152, placed second for medalist honors. On the way to the state title, the Park team beat Greendaie, Kenosha, and Horlick for the sectional championship 325 to 328, 333, and 335 respectively. Earlier in the Big-8 tournament, which Kenosha won with 318 strokes, Park, Beloit, and Madison West had tied for runner-up honors with totals of 324 each. 1958 Golf Squad Coach Emil Kuester, Jim Griesef Dan Arnundsen , Dave Snyder , Dick Wells , Paul Dawsonw, Don O1sen ', Jim Pansch , Dave Lehmannw, Dick Snyder, Bob Peterson, Ken Jensen, Bill Olson, Gib Berthel- SGU, Gary Johnson, Jim Murphy, Morgan Meissner, William Klingenmeyer, Cal Petersen, Dave Williams, John Williams, Bill Madsen, Howard Imhoft, and John Melgaard. iLettermen: 'returnin , Mgraduatedi 9 State Tournament - Park 1st I -Q u I Ll l hir' lit E?fl1!6K?1f4 gg H il 1 1 1 1 il1lii,igll 3515 VP-J.. , 'b.a., 1 sexism. 1958 Baseball Varsity Squad STANDING: Coach Richard Nelson, Dennis Kommeri Sherman Howards, Bill Burterheldi Ted Petrokis', Ralph l-lenke' Keith Franke , Dean Luclvigsonw, Dick Johnson, Torn Johnson', Dave Chrisiianseni Jerry Rasmussen , and Bob Blass . Big 8 conference at Janesville !7thl, Sectionals at Whitefish Bay: Tonis Mang qualified for state. The baseball team had a rough year in l958, winning two non-conference games, but losing all Big-8 engagements. The story seemed to be that when we had hitting we didn't get pitching, and when we got pitching we weren't hitting. The baseball candidates were a hungry group as i959 came on. Fairly successful summarizes the record ot the tennis team. The squad had more wins than in '57 and with a number ot lettermen returning antici- pated better times in '59. Veterans include: Dave Erbe, Steve Morgan, Ron Peterson, Ralph Sadlon, Mike Falconer, and Tom Christiansen. Track went through a re-building stage in '58, with sophomores and iuniors gaining valuable experience. Better records are looked tar this spring with a nucleus of outstanding lettermen back. These include: Mang, weights, Nordentott, pole vault and hurdles: and Tredrea, distance runs. 107 4, Q , X.. -.,fi Western Day On May l7, a relatively recent tradition at Park, the annual Western Day took place. Traditional Spring Latin Banquet Second year Latin students were enter- tained at their annual Latin Banquet on April 24. Attired in the floating robes of the Roman gods and goddesses, they spent their evening drinking nectar and being waited on by Helots, first year students. The cafeteria was transformed into a ban- quet hall llvlt. Olympusl, and was deco- rated in gold and two shades of purple. The script for the entertainment was written by Carole Jensen. The feast was ruled over by King Jupiter lDick Wellsl and Queen Juno lJoan Jensenl. Among those present UNSETJ were Tom Benson, Joan Farrell, and Colleen Westcott. Carnival Time One of the highlights of the year at Park is the carnival sponsored by Student Council. Under the direction of Lovice Becker, general chairman, participating groups set up booths in the cafeteria, along the first floor corridor, and in the girls' gym. Senior Council operated a refreshment stand, Wichaka a cake walk and telegraph agency, Rifle club a target range, Lettermen a spook house, Cheerleaders sports activities, Hi-Y a movie, and German club a traditional Beer Garden. Feature of the evening was a show in the boys' gym with Marshall Wexler as master of ceremonies. Talent included a boys' quartet from Franklin Junior High, a girls' quartet in- cluding Sandy Hansen, Kathy Priaulx, Gwen Evans, and Marsha Genich, and a teacher quartet of Roland Olson, Eilef Saetveit, A. B. Close, and Leander Berven. Carnival clientele, having helped refurbish the treasuries of the various clubs, rounded out an interesting evening with dancing in the gymnasium, Kipi Distribution Last year's KlPIS were passed out by the Student Council representatives in the homerooms. Among those eager to receive their books were Shirley Larsen, Carol Jen sen, John Williams and Joan Petersen.
