Life is made up of the activities of a given time or setting, and the people who par- ticipate in them. Washington-Lee is a microcosm, drawing its mem- bers from a cosmopolitan society that allows much leeway for both individual freedom and group ex- periments in getting along with others. We are exposed to peoples of different colors, races, and reli- gions, with new ideas, goals, and ideals, we can sample new foods, languages, and customs, and combine them with our already varied heritages. The assorted lot of us living together in our school community requires learning to get along with and care for each other. The knowledge of coexist- ence that we gain here will provide all of us, in the future, with a better understanding of our places in the world . . . the world to explore. 10 f Introduction
