People sharing, enjoying, N . Rick Kumro The true value of any yearbook probably won't be realized until years after its initial distribu- tion. Someday you'll be cleaning out a bookshelf and you'll come across this copy of The Blue and Gray 75. That's when you should sit down and read every word of this book. For in the following pages is a story. lt's a story about the memories of the 1974-75 school year. lt's about the special things that happened in 1974 and 1975. This year marked the fiftieth an- niversary of Washington-Lee. This year more than ever things were happening in this school. There was the structure of Washington-Lee. With a four million dollar bond allowance, renovation and rebuilding plans were underway. Architects and blue prints and hammering and drilling were familiar sights and sounds this year. For the students, Open Campus privi- leges were introduced. Open Campus meant being allowed to leave the school during lunch and during unscheduled periods. Sophomores had to wait until the second semester before being granted off- campus privileges. However, this was a difficult clause to en- force and was virtually ignored Jehan Galal by the administration. Even greater freedom was allowed to students with the privilege of smoking courts. In an effort to clear the air in the bathrooms, administrators, faculty and the school board approved the smoking court policy. If you had signed permission from your parents and if you attended a series of smoking seminars, you were allowed to go outside and smoke. Obviously, this li ,. iiff? 99 Ron Schuler presented problems in the winter and in the rain. Also different this year was the absence of daily homerooms. No longer did students attend homeroom before first period to have attendance taken. Instead 7 'x 1 05.61 Amparo Castaneda 4
suffering, th inkingf' attendance was taken during first period. When time for nec- essary business, like elections, class business or distribution of the Crossed Sabres, an adviso- ry period was scheduled after first period. No longer could 5 vi wi. Pam Sullivan students come late to school and not miss anything. If you were late for first period, 30 minutes detention was to be as- signed. The Blue and Gray itself changed this year. We've used a lot of writing in the 75 book. The staff has tried to present a true account of what happened to people this year. We want you to read this book and to un- derstand the people in our school. No matter how diverse our school population may be Howard Debus we all share common ground in this school and in this commu- nity. The purpose of The Blue and Gray 75 is people. . .peo- ple sharing, enjoying, suffering and thinking. The staff asks you to read this book and hopefully you'II understand and re- member what Washington-Lee was in 1974 and 1975. The Editor FQ' 54.-. Jeff Smith ,.- ' 5- , I 1. .1 ..v'--'nfl 1 -' .
