Getting ready for the Three Ft's After the fourth of July you suddenly realized that in another nine weeks you'd be back to the same old grind of schoolwork. For some it was a depressing thought. For others, the thought of football games and dances and seeing all your friends was excit- ing and something to look forward to. The thought of school and brisk, fall weather can be uplifting when you're working in 98 degrees and 7004, hu- midity. Praise should go to all those who had to go out and work in the hot sun on the gridiron. lvlany long hours were spent running and panting in football practice long before school started. Shorts and halters were the order of the day for cheerleaders who got together to perfect their yelling voices and rhythmic chants. Drill team members and majorettes also started working on their routines while getting uniforms ordered, or- ganized and distributed. Sour chords of music were struck in marching band while practicing to make perfect before the first game. Slowly but surely that first day of school was approaching and few were going to get caught without being ready. In that last week or two before the grind began, an effort was made to cram a complete summer's fun into a few short days. There were a few details that had to be attended to before school started. There is something about crisp, new sheets of paper and long, sharp pencils that is rather fun. Notebooks, paper and pencils had to be purchased and due to the paper shortage they were more expensive this year than ever before. No one can show up the first day of school without a new outfit. So summertime paychecks were put into new ward- robes to impress everyone back at school. When the fateful day finally arrived and the doors opened for the flood of a new year's students, there was a certain excitement in the air. lt's a certain feeling that can only be felt by someone going back on the first day of school. 1, . What's in a name? lt's a few minutes before eight on a typical morning at Washington-Lee. Groups of students stand around gos- siping. Looking down the hallways, one can see streamers and signs decorating the athletes' lockers. The lockers close with a bang as students rush to get to class, Student A: Better hurry up or you'll be late for class. Student B: Who cares if l'm late for homeroom? My homeroom teacher won't notice. Student A: Maybe not since you're not going to homeroom. Student B: l'm not going to homeroom, huh? Student A: Of course not. If this were last year you'd be going to ho- meroom, but it's this year so you're not. Student B: l'm not? Student A: No. Student B: lfrustratedl Then where am l going? Student A: Right now you're going to first period but if you want to know what happened to homeroom, you go there after first period but it's not homeroom. Student B: lt's not homeroom? Student A: No. Student B: Then what is it? Student A: lt's advisory period. l il t il Student B: What's an advisory period ? Student A: The same thing as homeroom but it doesnt happen as often. Student B: But you just said it wasn't homeroom. Student A: Well, it's just that you're not allowed to call it homeroom anymore 'cause it's called advisory period and you don't have a homeroom teacher, you have an ad- visor. But basically it's the same thing. lt's where you go to take care of all your business and stuff. As the two students talk, the hall is getting quiet and people are drifting into the rooms of their first period classes. Student B: Okay, so I have to go to first period. Oh, my God, that's at the other end of the school! See ya! The sound of clomping footsteps echoes down the hall. The bell rings as a rushing figure turns the corner. l l -pw Top: Steve Lane and Tom Estabrook have a rising discussion on the stairs before class. Bottom: It seems like Sharon Williams would like to go home but her overpowering subcon- scious suggests that she stay in school. 12 f
