When the tension of school work seems to be getting you down, it's always nice to sit back and think about summer. Yes . . . summer, that nice, long period of vacation that never seems long enough. You could sleep in and stay out late. There was so much fun during the summer of 74l Ocean City and its neighboring east coast paradises were the refuge of many Washington-Lee students. Do you remember boardwalks, and ice cream cones and novelty tee-shirts and hot, gritty sand, and sore, lob- ster-red sunburns? There was cool, blue water and hunting for seashells and sailing and swimming and surfing and partying. lt was a perfect sur- rounding for relaxation and fun. If you weren't lucky enough to make it to the beach, you could have relaxed at home. The habit of the great, All- American Teenager was to sleep in all morning, watch television all after- noon, and go out all night. In the eve- ning you could take your fancy car to lvlcDonald's to check up with your friends and find out where the party would be that night. On a special night you could go to a concert. 74 was the year of the comeback, with return concerts of The Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Youngg and even Elvis Presley. Cur- rent favorites like Earth, Wind and Fire, The Grateful Dead and Marvin Gaye also made appearances in and around the Washington area. But a constant concert-goer perpetuates an expensive habit. Not only were the ticket prices outrageous, but so, too, was the cost of gasoline for the trip to the Capitol Center. Add to that the cost of beer for the newly eligible eighteen-year-olds, and the other things in which to indulge and you had quite an expensive evening's en- tertainment. To support the habit of summertime solace many were em- ployed for the summer. Construction jobs brought in sizable paychecks for sizeable quantities of sweat. Howev- er, it was difficult for a female to enjoy or be employed in this kind of labor. Swimming pool lifeguards, or workers in fast-food restaurants were typical jobs. Also common were tem- porary office help or register clerks in stores. Most jobs were not career- minded but simply pastimes to bring in some extra cash in a time when prices climbed higher and higher every day. We cannot forget the tur- moil of Watergate revelations throughout the summer. The shocking transcripts of a corrupt administration took its toll on a hot August afternoon when Richard lvl. Nixon resigned the office of the President. A feeling of relief, as one experiences when removing a heavy load, was felt by many people. Welcomed into the White House like a breath of clean air, was Gerald Ford. He started a Honeymoon with Congress and brought a new earthiness and family atmosphere into the mansion on Pennsylvania Avenue. His 17-year-old daughter, Susan, swore never to give up her blue jeans and probably en- joyed many of the same things that any student of Washington-Lee would enjoy. She had a special summer in 74, but, then, didn't everyone? 8
