'Y it '. 2 Dorothy Baumle Music department offers leadership opportunities Whether performing before the student body at religbus assemblies or fachg rain-soalced spectators at football games, the vocal and instrumental branches of the music department are often on view, Much of the behind-the-scenes planning for these per- formances is conducted by the officers of each music group. These officers plan performances and aid in selecting the compositions, The officers of Mixed Chorus, Girls' Chorus, Girls' Ensemble, Choir and Madrigals meet to evaluate the general success ofthe vocal branch. A similar evaluation of the instrumental branch is made by the officers of the orchestra and the three bands. Under the cooperative direction of officers and teachers. the music department adds a special touch to nearly every W-L gathering. . we Mary Lou Alexander 1 Girls and Mixed Chorus, Music Appreciation Orchestra, Music Theory Florence Boolrer Choir Madrigals Fred Pfeiffer Band AT THE LAST PRACTICE prior to the Christmas Assembly, the choir carols the hymn, Christmas Day. Artists brighten W-L corridors with color Mosaics, bloclc printing, tashion design, illustrations- these are created by art students studying under the di- rection ot Mr. Leroy Anderson and Mr. Franlclin Moon. Presenting what his students want to learn, Mr. Anderson teaches the tine art in the three general art courses. This year, throughout the county, second year art students may choose the type ot proiect tor their nine weelc's work. Each report period the individual, or a group, concentrates on a particular undertalcing, Applied design students pursue the study ot art as associ- ated with industry and everyday living. Among their learn- ing experiences are the designing ot a car dashboard, creation ot an original lamp and the producing ot a monogram using their initials. The Penman Art Club provides illustrations tor that literary publication. The cover design tor the Penman, its advertisements, and the decorations tor the Soclc Hop are supplied by this organization. The posters and murals which announce coming events and which advertise the sale of publcations carry the approved stomp ot the art departmert. Artistic students corstrccted the large fvhite rabbit, labeled l-larvey, which roamed the halls daily announcing the play. Alsc tor this production artists drew the paintings which hung trom the walls in Mrs, Simmons' living rcorn and a student designed the cover tcr the program, Five ct the ten student drawings. to be considered tcr printing in the Washington-Post Times Herald, were painted by W-L students.
