SENIOR CLASS OF 'I9-4!-7 OF vwxsa-nnNQ'roN-Las i-IIGi-I SCi-IOOL ARLINQTQN, VIRGINIA PRESENTS vowma 'rwamw oi-' Ti-IE BLUE AND GRAY DEDIC TIU To Washington-Lee High School, We dedicate this edition of the BLUE AND GRAY. By Washington-Lee, We mean not only a buildingg our school is many more things, intangible things. It is, first of all, our classes in English and chemistry and civics, homework and piles of books. It is the satisfaction We get from yelling for our sidev and the sore throat the next day. It is a hamburger and a chocolate shake after the last big formal. It is to the rear and by the numbers, the martial music and spirited salutes of our cadets. It is the quiet beauty and solemnity of the Christmas pageant. e It is the splashy posters expounding the virtues of people and things and times to come. It is a Way of life made up of all these things and many more. It has been a challenge and an inspiration and this is our Way of saying, Thanks for everythingf' SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS MR. Now spon- sored by Mr. Campbell, the society endeavors to reward literary achievement as well as other accomplishments. Each year, awards are presented to the winner of the annual Elos short story contest and to the best actor and actress of the plays pro- duced during the school year. Athletic-scholastic trophies are also presented to an outstanding boy and girl in the Senior Class on the basis of athletic ability, scholastic achievement, and citizenship. Increasing its scope, Elos members recently began compiling a history of the school which will grow more valuable with the years. It is their ambition to stimu- late 'interest in literary activity and it is for this aim that they strive. The K'Little Generals won ten of their twelve games against the stilfest schedule of any team in the Metropolitan Area. After dropping a h a r d fought en- counter to Portsmouth's Wilson High, the W-L powerhouse came back with a winning streak of seven games. VVhen the 'iGenerals had safely laid away George Washington on Thanksgiving Day, they re- ceived an invitation to go to High Point, North Carolina and play High Point High in a night Furniture Bowl contest. They accepted and brought home a 26-14 win. The W-L aggregation was picked as the best High School team in the area. The High School coaches placed ten W-Lites on the '46 All- High squad with McGill, Sieber, and Groettum chosen first string, while Reymer, Johnson, McMurrer, Harvey, Field, Hayes, and Lewis grabbed other spots. Fowler, Schwarzmann, Stanfield, Dawkins, Ambrogi, Curry and Hol- singer also were outstanding. Thompson and Woolschlager, co-captains, were injured in the Bullis game and were out most .of the year. McMurrer became the first to score a point-after-touchdown in the history of the All Star game as he kicked three. Hayes, who completed 9 passes over S5 yards C7 for touchdownsj was chosen as the outstanding back of the game. He was chosen on the twelfth annual All-Southern scholastic team. The team score of 308 points was high for this area. The record also shaded the old record of 269, set in 1942. Lewis' 74 points was individual high while Hayes' 72 was close behind. -1114? The 1946 baseball team was another of the Washington-Lee athletic teams which experienced a very successful season. Rated the best nine in the Metropolitan Area, the Little Generals won thirteen games While dropping only four. They also copped the Northern Virginia title by polishing off Fairfax, Mount Vernon, and Lane twice and G. W. once. The most decisive win of the season was the 18-0 rout of Lane on May 15, 1946. The team won the suburban championship and, as there was no state competition, the boys could try for no more than sectional honors. W-L's three star pitchers, 'lLefty', Bridenbaker, Monk,' Carney, and Jake Garland each tossed one- hit encounters to contribute to one of the most successful diamond campaigns in the school's history. At the time Garland and Bridenbaker, who graduated in June, seemed headed for pro ball. Roger Groettum, star outfielder and possessor of one of the best arms in these parts, wielded the big stick last season. Per- ry Currin, great W-L shortstop, and Harry McPherson, third baseman, also hit heavily to pace the Gen- erals' offensive. The W-Lites pulled off a triple play in the second game w i t h Warren High of Front Royal. The record ...... LT COLONEL LUNDBERG MAJOR HANLEY CAPTAIN RANCK CAPTAIN HOFFERBERT BEGIIVIENTHL STAFF Regular drilling five days a week, raising and lowering the flag, firing on the range, and the precision drilling of the Crack Squads are but a few of the Cadet activities. As an extra service, the Cadet Corps attends to many jobs which facilitate smoother opera- tion in school undertakings. Drilling in the annual dress parade on Founders' Day and ushering at assemblies are but two of these services. A special ushering detail, and one from which the Cadets derive a great deal of pleasure, is the detail for the concert of the National Symphony Orchestra. The Girls' Battalion takes part in all activities 'except the carrying of rifles. The Regimental Ball is the big social event of the Cadet year. Another occasion which is anticipated for its social as well as its military aspect is a trip to Winchester for a competitive parade at the Apple Blossom Festival. Each year the rivalry between George Washington High School's Cadets and our own reaches its height in a competitive drill between the schools' prize companies. Win- ning this drill is one of the best-remembered accomplishments of a Cadet,s career. The Cadet Band is also given a chance to display its ability by a spring concert. So a Cadet,s life is a full one. With drills, parades, trips, and dances, he is kept al- ways busy and interested. lsT. LT. RAINES MfScT. HILL MXS NIILLER CAPT. SIDNEY R. IOHNSTON HAULING and EXCAVATING 3901 Wilson Boulevard ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA OX. 2915 41411, QUALITY SHOP Corner Wilson Boulevard and North Highland Oh, I hope I get 11 corsage for the prom. And most of all, I hope it comes from The Or- chid Box. Their flowers are always so fresh and arranged so well. When you walk into the shop it's like stepping into a flower fairyland. The last time I was there Shorty Woolschlager was pinning a gardenia on Bobbie Roberts. Ah, what a cute picture that made! ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA Ox. 1875 Gee, do you realize that we graduate in just about a week? I can hardly realize it's so soon. Everyone is bustling around getting new clothes. All of the boys are flocking to the Quality Shop. They have the nicest shirts and ties. In fact, they have the best of every- thing. Why look, there's Bob and Arthur looking in the window now! 1 THE ORCHID BOX 3195 Wilson Boulevard ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA Ox. 4113 and Ch. 8661 41421- Did you know that Charlotte Mulherin and Nelson are engaged? And they were looking at rings again at Roger's Jewelers. A nice pair, aren't they? Most of us go to Roger's for anything in the jewelry line. They have lovely things- just the sort our crowd goes for! ROGER'S IEWELERS 3172 Wilson Boulevolrd ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA GX. 1221 ARLINGTON DAIRY 2701 Wilson Boulevard ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA Ox. 0090 Why don't you stop in at my house for a glass of milk and a piece of cake? Mother made the cake and the milk's from the Arling- ton Dairy. We get all of our dairy products from them. Seems like Barbara Mills shares our enthusiasm for Arling- ton Dairy Products- maybe that accounts for her lovely teeth and pretty skin. My, but we had fun on our little shopping tour, didn't we.
