M V ,fm n .V fsysf-A M M L Q Throughout the past year your Student Government has been functioning, under the sponsorship of Miss Elliott, in the cap- acity of student representation both in stu- dent and faculty projects. The Point Sys- tem, one of the outstanding achievements of scholastic activity in recent years, was instituted as a main project along with the regular Student Government activities such as handbooks and patrols. - 45 This year's Student Government has made one notable advance in that it has not only promoted student projects but also projects directly affecting student wel- fare. Thus advancements have been made on such projects as rotation of class periodsg recognition of tennis as a major sport, and procurement of classes in German. Another of the projects was an original melo- drama which the society presented in April. Elos was founded in February of 1940 by Mr. Lewter. THE I-I1-Y PLEDGE The Senior Hi-Y Club of Washington-Lee, a branch of the National Hi-Y Fellowship of the Y.M.C.A., is one of the school's service groups. Membership is in one sense honorary, as applicants are chosen on the basis of character and scholarship. Only students of the three up- per classes are accepted. A membership campaign is conducted every semester to keep the rolls full to a capacity of forty boys. Of course there is an informal period of trial which is culminated by a formal initiation. Among the organization's service activities are the morning cafeteria patrol and the clean-up campaign. At Christmas the boys collected toys for repair at local fire stations, and also helped decorate the auditorium for the Christmas pageant. Regular parts of the Hi-Y program are visits to the Y.M.C.A., and informal discussions of school and social problems usually led by the sponsor Mr. Jackson. Each spring members invite their fathers to a reunion banquet where the parents are brought in closer contact with the club through speeches by Y officials and by the boys themselves. The group was established to create within the school a spiritual atmosphere which is necessary for an adequate educa- tional program. It has been the aim of the members of this group to increase their knowledge of the Bible, to aid students in solving their problems, to make Christ more real to His followers, to introduce the Saviour of the world to those that don't know Him as their Friend, and to cause students to realize that getting in the proper relationship with God and being in accord with His will is rhe most important thing in life. The latter should be the first concern of every person for it is the essential foundation on which every successful life must be based. Jlml 5 f 1 gf Ji IHDHI 'X V N 'J if x, . P . In the rather drab year of 1930 there occurred a most happy event-the birth of the Girl's Auxiliary. There were only about forty girls in a single platoon called Company 1 that first year, but the second year, when Miss Williams took over the duties of the first sponsor, Miss Powell, the organization more than doubled itself and was proud to display two platoons. Each year the auxiliary has grown, making it necessary to form a second company, K in 1933, and a third, NL , in 1936. However, increased membership has by no means been the principle objective of the auxiliary, this has come as a result of the number of interesting activities offered. After eight years, the girls are still trying hard to outdrill the George Washington High Auxiliary for permanent possession of a valuable trophy. J1wt6nlL Dropping Calvert Hall and St. John's and add- ing mighty Portsmouth, the Little Generals faced a tough nine game schedule. A National Training school was the first to feel the power of the Blue and Gray attack and fell on the round end of a 27-0 score. The Red Raiders of Western gave W. L. one of the hardest-fought games of the year as the Baker Boys eked out a 14-13 win over the D.C. Champ- ions. The mud and Roughneck Connor were in the eyes of the Little Generals, when visiting undefeated Masonic Home eleven lost a murky 13-0 tussle to the Boys from Arlington. At this point underrated Portsmouth High of Norfolk, Va. bluntly ended Washington-Lee's 14- game winning streak of 2 years. A week later W. L.'s district rival, Central, checked the invaders and came out on top of a 7-6 count. No excuses were made by coach Johnny Baker and his team. You can't win ,em all. Across the river the Blue and Gray tide redeemed itself as it scored almost at will to smother the Anacostia Indians 33-0. Captain and 'fullback Russ Arnaud sparked the Home team ,to a well earned 14-0 win over our traditional rivals, G. W. High of Alexandria. Eddie Decelle scored twice on line plunges with Merrill Hoover booting the extra points. Much credit was given Rod Gaumnitz for his blocking and great defensive work, and to Urhanski for his ball toting, the Generals forward wall was made up of Mose Wilson, John Grinnell, Ralph Shumway, Warren Kelly and Baker,s tackle trio, Hoover, Shepard, and Johnson. A post season game for charity put on the grid- iron two of the season's best local teams, as the Irish of Gonzaga tangled with W-L on Dec. 7th. Russ Arnaud was the single member from W-L on the mythical all-metropolitan first team, while Johnson was nominated for the second team. naud, Grinnell, Western, Oliv- er, Senior Managerg Deming, Second Row-Kelly, Johnson, Luther, Gaumnitz, Wall, Har- Third Row-Williams, Hoov- er, Donnegan, L. Bmluzf, -Bal Starting the new season with only three veterans, Coach Clements, new varsity basketball coach, was off to a good start with a decisive win over Fa.- mouth High of Virginia. Eastern High tripped the Generals in the next encounter, but the W-L boys gave the school-boy champs a hard hght before bowing. Covering the Class A Circuit of Virginia, the Little Generals did very well with wins over Petersburg and Hope- well. Coach Clements' boys were off to a flying start in the Northern Virginia Conference, swamp- ing the Fairfax and Fredericksburg quintets. Cen- tral defeated the Generals by one point, but later in the season the Arlington boys came back to win 23-22. Roosevelt, Southern Interscholastic champs, whipped Washington-Lee by six points Q41-35, but the great last quarter rally of the Generals was very worthy of victory. In the last game of the season W-L trounced St. Johns Prep of Washington. Washington-Lee avenged the bitter defeats handed them last year by George Washington with two win over the Presidents. The first game was a nip and tuck battle paced by Captain Rube McNab, with the Little Generals finally coming out on top. The last game was a bit more lop-sided as the Gen- erals routed G-W 36-24. The Generals, all in all, did very well for them- selves. They were champions of Northern Virginia and were serious contenders in the Class A Con- ference. They took part in the Star Tournament but were eliminated by Gonzaga's Metropolitan Champs. ,en if eefle-'wi-at po WP 623343 , BASEBALL TEAM Left to Right First Row- Olson, Mc- Phearson, Tapp, Johnson, Shephard Bowbeer, Wilson, Owens. If you go out and try to hustle, You ought to he on the job in the office. Lost opportunities, unemployment and low-salaried jobs can often be traced to lack of proper preparation. The national defense programs make this the ideal time to train for specialized jobs. As more and more young men are enlisted, business becomes more and more dependent upon trained young women to carry on. With the increased employment in Washington, local business firms are expanding, em- ploying more people, paying better salaries. Trained office workers are in demand. Secretarial training is more than shorthand and typewriting. These are only two of the ofiice skills required-Business English, Spelling, Penmanship, Filing, Oliice Practice, Busi- ness Machines, Secretarial Accountingg are a few of the other things which are studied by the trainee in Arlington Institute School for Secretaries. Arlington Institute is fully accredited. g aflrlingiolz ' School For Secretaries NENA HELEN FOSTER, AB., Principal 3150 WILSON BOULEVARD t ' OXFORD 2040 INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION-PLACEMENT SERVICE COMPLIMENTS CQMPLIMENTS ' OF OF WINDRIDGE 66 I-IANDY F.
