Ive had a GOODHART and RITSI-I-ed over and came to A-HALT. The KING of HOLLAND, with his STEIVART. sitting on the window sill was HOLLER-ing to his COZZENS who were under the CARR. What is wrong? we asked. 'QSPEAK-MAN. but his face wgas as hard as FLYNT. HENRY picked up a BARR and hegan to BRAGC about his great POWERS. The whole lnotor is out of TOONEN he said. but anyway. it SPARKS. It wouldnit start. however. so we decided to have a picnic in a SMALL- WOOD nearlw. Vive made a tire in one of the BISRROWS and made DONALD-SON KOCH. while warning hiin to watch the RICE and not to BPRN-ETT. Ive all sat and watched the COL-BIIRN and sniffed the odor of WELCH rarehit. Seeing a cow. ALEX- ANDICR SMITH had an idea and he said i'Let's see who MILKS best. thus beginning a contest which ended in a RAItH while everyone XVARD-ed off hlows and got angry except FOSTICR who could KID-WELL. After dinner we ROSE up and finally get- ting the CARR started. we headed EAST for the CUFF course. hecause the DRIVER was an amateur and wanted MORSE-LAND. Wle hit a DOE which was so hadly hurt that we had to CARRIER with us to the town. There we had to WHEELER through the streets ringing a BELL and crying. DOE for sale. We finally sold her for six PEFNCE for which we were BALL-ed out hy two SHARPE old ladies. Caslow dt? llli CLASS is organized into two divisions under the eapalile sponsorship of Miss Orndorll and Mrs. Coreoran. The elass eolors are purple and eream. and the 1-lass flow er is the lily'-of-tlie-valley. ln Septemlier. with the opening of sehool. very' responsilrle ollieers were eleeted who are still presiding. By' this time the elass is thoroughly aequainted with the sellonl and feels that it is a part of it. Its members rope that they will he able to repay' the sehool for the part it has played in the sue- eessful dexelopment of the elass. ln N133 a large group of freshmen entered Washington-Lee. They' took their work seriously and soon heeame noted for their high sf-holastie standing. However. all work and no inlay' makes exen a freshman dull. and so they' joined the various eluhs. the cadets and went out for athletie teams. As time waits for no one. this eeleliraterl elass of '37 entered the Sophomore Class. A group of harder working. harder play ing students eould not he found. Again they entered wh:nleheartedly' into the school aetirities. this time distinguishing them- selves in their dillerent organizations. Xvhen the elass. almost as a whole. lmeeame the ,lunior Class they' were a large group of experieneed students. Many responsiliilities were thrown upon their shoul- ders. ililiey aeeepted these without llineliing or trying to eyade them. '37, 59 BLLiEANDGRAY.1936 Junior Class Histor T FTER the new wings were completed in the fall of '3l. the junior Classfthe class of '37fwas the lirst class to enter Washington-Lee High School. It is also interesting to note that the ,Iuniors were the first class to attain that rank with six homerooms and a total of 231 students. It is quite evident that we will be the largest graduating class Washington-Lee has ever had. This shows that the modern youth is filled with ambition and is eager to make the most of the opportunities that are open to him. The class sponsors are: Miss Carson. Mr. Driver. Miss Loving. Miss lflliott. Miss Firebaugh and Miss Baker: the latter four have serv ed since the ninth grade. Our first term at YVashington-Lee was spent in becoming accustomed to and learning the rules and regulations: these helped make us a better part ot the school whieh we had looked forward to entering. During the eighth grade we began to show our abilities: that year we began to organize the junior High School Student Government separate from that of the Senior High School. and Bill Ames was elected first president of the ,lunior High School. ln l933. we entered the ninth grade and became a part of the Senior High School with Patil Brown as our president. It was not long before we realized that senior high was quite different from junior high school and called for more serious work. Now 'instead of being told our subjects we decided these things for ourselves. As Freshmen we were allowed to participate in the various activities of the school: such as. govern- ment. various clubs. and athletics. Many of the girls earned their W-l, monograms for their skill in liockeyf. swimming. archery. and other athletics. As Sophomores we elected Ralph Pendexter our president and under his leader- ship we continued the scrapbook which had been previously' started and in it were put clippings and other material of interest about our class and its members. Xow we are Juniors! Wie Hnd that as such we have many' added responsibilities. but under our president. Guy Hloomingburg. we are meeting them successfully. The school horseshoe and hockey' tournaments were won by our classmates. We are also very proud of the fact that l3illy - Havens. a member of our class. is going to participate in the Olympics in Germany' this year. He is going to travel with the ll. S. Olympic learn in the paddling events. He is the present lnternational Canoe Tilting Champion. Although we. the class of '31 have used the same colors. crimson and tan. ever since our lfreshman year. we will be proud to wear the green and white. which are symbolic of the Senior. next fall. --eEL1z,xrsr:Tn Mirerx. 60 BLUE AND GRAY,1936 PERSONSS NAME ,lack Golden A..,.,. The Hu E AND URM would never have materialized had it not been for the cooperation and ellieienev of the typing department. The vital part that typing plays in any puhlieation is an obseure point to most people. However. in getting this 131.111 AND GRAY ready for printing we see that the tvpists have played a leading part. The fae- ultv this year has been exeeptionally patient and helpful. Mr. Fletcher Kemp. our Superintendent of Schools. the founder of the Corps. con- ceived the idea of a Cadet Corps before the final plans for our school building were. completed. As a result of the untiring efforts of Mr. Kemp and Mr. Yanderslice the Corps became a reality in January l927. At the time of its organization the Corps had as its faculty advisor lVlr. Ludwig and as drill instructor First Lieutenant C. B. Hudson of Fort Meyer. The Corps advanced very rapidly and in the second year the one company organ- ization was expanded to a battalion of three companies. ln the third year no new com- panies were formed. but the existing companies were enlarged. thereby increasing their efficiency. A chronological list of the past and present Professors of Military Science and Tactics of the Washington-Lee Cadet Corps: Captain C. E. Johnson l92T-l92B Lieutenant Colonel C. S. Mm-Xeil .1929-l93s1A Lieutenant A. B. Tillette l93-1-l935 Lieutenant E. J. Frack 1935- The Corps which now has the largest enrollment in its history is comprised of a regimental staff. a battalion staff. a military band. three lettered companies. and MB . which are uniformed units. Cu a non-uniformed unit and there is a training: platoon. Each company as now organized is composed of tw o platoons of three squads which gives the Corps the best company organization it has ever had. thus enabling the companies to function more efficiently. Competition. hard work. and cooperation. the code of the Corps . permanently instilled into the soul of every cadet. will always keep Washington-Leeis colors in the van. and will send from Washington-Lee new men. well qualified to fight the battles of life. Betty Nelson Mr. Christie Bob Thomas Roland Toeppen Ben Vifeston Tom Wrilliams Wfith the passing of years. science has become more important to ollle every ay life. Youth everywhere is striving to learn more of this wonderful subject. Science clubs have been formed and many things that were dark mysteries in the days of the one room school building are now the common knowledge of almost everyone. The Wrashington-Lee Science Club of l93O. organized under the sponsorship of Mr. Christie. has an enrollment of seventeen members. The club has no program committee. but each member is expected to cooperate in the reports. discussions. and experiments. The programs have included reports on the lives of such scientists as Faraday. Galileo. Madam Curie. Xewton. and others. Following talks on scientific subjects covering X-rays. electricity. television. tele- scopes. etc.. the club has engaged in general discussion. The club has conducted some interesting experiments. ln one of these. laughing gas or nitrous oxide was prepared and tested. Plans are being made for an assembly to be held in the near future and also for experiments which will round up the years work. That interest is the keynote to success has been fully attested by the progress shown by the Science Club. 95 Bl.L'EANDGReXY1936 Red Cross Club 519011-WI' Miss Johnson OIVFILIICIIS f flIf11'I'H1f11-' Elsie Groot SU!'l'6flll'YY-Tl'f'fISlIIPI' Polly XXHZQI llHf'lfllI'l' f.'llIll.l'NIIIlI Iilf-goof Sig-wal-1 Nl l'lMl3l'lllS Lillian lly rnes lflsie Groot l'1-ggi lilIllllN'l'lLtlll'l nlgllflflyu liing l' lHlitJll1't' Grayson lflvanor Stewart l,oist21-ayson llolli Xxelzel iI,Xl,l'lNll.-Xli UI A-XC'l'lYlrl'llfS Ue'lolw1'S Xoxeiiilwr V l'r1-paralioii of tllnistnias menu 1-ou-rs for li. The score of 21-0 looks good for us. but we were plenty worried for a little while. Playing in a sea of mud and against other disheartening odds. W-L was nosed out by Newport News Highis Typhoons. The final score was T-2. The L'Little Generals encountered a tartar in Western High of Washington. but the fellows managed to apply that extra something to prevent the red machine from scoring. and to walk off the field the victors. The count was 7-6. On Thanksgiving Day. before the largest crowd ever to witness a football game in Northern Virginia. a fighting team from XV-L succumbed to our ancient enemy from Alexandria. Leading George Vtiashington High 9-lt at the half. things looked every good. but the Presidents came back in the second with a devastating running attack. Before the game was over. those runners had attacked our goal line two too many times, and the game was theirs by virtue of three points. 12-9. To point out any outstanding individual would be unfair to everyone else. but several facts are well worth mentioning. Eddie 0'Brien was just about the best place kicker in this section. connecting for a score almost at will. Dundred Evers was one of the best defensive ends in the Metropolitan area. Billy Bragg at the other end was a versatile pass receiver. Leonard Hippler and Jimmie Fixx were outstanding in the backfield. 6'Tubby Wfelch stood out defensively. and as a running guard was all that could be asked. BASEBALL TEAM Baseball With a xiew toward repeating his performance of successful encounters of last year. Nlr. Richardson. early in the spring sent forth the lusty call for the usual array of ambitious aspirants for his hasehall nine. Although this was not anything unusual, it was made colorful to us this year liecause of the record that our team must uphold. Mr. Rim-hardson's higgest worry. as usual, was his pitching staff. He had left from the '35 campaign only three pitchers--Cost. Wheeler. and Preston. Of these. only Cost has had any experience. His infield was blessed with hetter prospects. For these positions there was keen rivalry. The most likely. however. were Anderson. who. unfortunately. hroke his ankle in T351 Dansherger. who manhandles that first hase like a big leaguer: Smallwood. a snappy third sacker: Simpson. who covers second: and Mc-Quinn. who is a shortstop. The outfield was of mediocr material. with Milstead as the shining light. The others were not to he overlooked. however. for they meant business. and were out to clean up with anything that came their way. , The lmoys opened their season on April 3. against Manassas. After that they had a rather strenuous seaon against them. including several high school champions and others that were not to he taken lightly. 'IO4 BLUEANDCRAY.1936 cs ,ess , if TRACK TEAM Tr a e k Wiith the beginning of NV-lfs spring sport program we again see track becoming a major sport. Last year the student body began to take notice of the Blue and Grays track meets because of the newly aroused interest in XY-L's stadium and quarter-mile track. Wle have with us this year fiye letter-men-namely Minnick lcaptainb. Ball. Bragg. Dewey. and Allen. Captain Minnick is the Generals only pole-yaulterg and is also one of two javelin throwers. Bragg high jumps. throws the jayelin. and heayes the discus. Dewey is our great miler and half-miler: Ball is our dash letter man and Allen our letter-man hurdler. This year by a lucky stroke we obtained from Mt. St. ,loseph's a boy by the name of Fred Lehmann. Lehmann has time and time again shown himself. perhaps. the fastest man on the fild. Then again we have Jimmy Down from Central High School -high jumper. and Lunquest Robertson. Westernite. discus hurler. This year's team was considerably weakened by the loss of Dick Strickler. last year's captain and shot-putter superior. Mr. Baker. our football-basketball-track coach. is still looking for a good shot-putter and javelin thrower. Be all this as it may-XV-L has a fine squad. and don't let anybody tell you any- thing different. Wleill be seeing you on the field. RALPH PENDEXTER.
