Mrs. Maxie Arnett Mrs. Maxie Arnett was born in a log cabin in a mountain section of eastern Kentucky. Her parents owned and operated a farm and a country store during the spring and summer months and spent the winter months teaching in one-room elementary schools and conducting adult-education classes. When Mrs. Arnett was three years old, her parents moved to small college town about twenty miles from their farm in order to educate their six children. Mrs. Arnett ' s earlier years of teaching followed the pattern of her parents, one-room elementary schools and adult education classes. Some of her extra-curricular ac¬ tivities included sawing or chopping wood, building fires, sweeping the school-house, cooking lunch for the students, and sometimes making or repairing their clothing. During World War II, Mrs. Arnett married the boy next door and came to Washington, D.C. as an instruc¬ tor for the War Department. Two years later she returned to Morehead State University for her A.B. degree in education, and then to George Washington University for her M. A. degree in education. Having been a teacher for thirty-one years, Mrs. Arnett has taught in Fairfax County for thirteen years, including seven years as mathematics teacher at Irving. 2 Administration Principal Finance Officer Educational Secretary Mr. Roy Brooks Mrs. June Cranford Mrs. Idell Swett We hope you will want to recall many happy occasions while you were here at Irving. Students assume the responsibility for finding and reporting the news and laying out the copy. Miss Joanne Schubert is the faculty sponsor. The Wisp has three staff meetings per month which consists of an assignment session, a proof reading session, and a layout session. The Wishp is assembled and distributed to the faculty and student body six times per year. n H| 1 The Hard Working Sketch Book Staff The SKETCH BOOK, consisting of seventy-two pages this year, is the largest Irving has ever produced. With the additional pages went additional work for the staff. Over 1,400 photographs had to be alphabetized, labeled, and laid out on each page. Little foulers, with unknown names, appeared suddenly to misplace photographs, to unalpha¬ betize our list, and then to vanish as suddenly as they ap¬ peared . Since it was the staff ' s goal to represent as many faces and events of the school year as possible, numerous photo¬ graphs were taken for the additional informal pages. With the use of Candid Camera ' s secrets, our top agents stole silently around the school photographing with our all- knowing, hidden camera both candid and candied shots of many unaware students and faculty members. Now don ' t be surprised if you find yourself caught on film while fol¬ lowing your daily routine at Irving. We, the SKETCH BOOK staff, hope that this 1967 SKETCH BOOK has captured many happy memories for you. The staff is listed in the front of the yearbook. 15 Irving Has Many Clubs Science-Math Club English Club Current Events Club Future Teachers of America In Which To Belong Audio-Visual Club Table Monitors 7th Grade Table Monitors 8th Grade Bus Patrols :■ ' T UUlMWm Ijiol} Chess Club Library Helpers Office Helpers Industrial Arts Club Home Arts Club 8th Grade Art 7th Grade Art Club Debate Club Photography Club Honored Students Clinic Helpers All Regional Band Winners of the Can Food Drive Club Presidents All ‘A’ Students Irving’s Swinging Mixed Chorus Four-Arts Chorus Pep Band Beginning Band Music Department Concert Band Concert Band Reserve Band Reserve Band Irvings Active Physical Education Program Cheerleaders Girls Basketball All-Stars Boys Basketball All-Stars 8th Grade Volleyball Champs ■  ' ■ V 1 1 8th Grade Football Champs 8th Grade Football Runner-Ups 7th Grade Football Champs Borror’s Gymdandies P.E.
