MEMOIRS '70 Volume LV Washington Irving High School Clarksburg, West Virginia Editor . . . Anne McNeer Ass't. Editor . . . Becky King Business Manager . Martha White Photographer . . . Jim Frenzel Foreword The years you spend at Wl are ones you'll never forget. They are filled with hard study, laughter, special smiles, and a few tears. These are the years when tender dreams are formed and grow into mature ideas. The leaves of a tree sprout and grow and change into beautiful shades and blow away and sprout again, according to the season. Youth Is much like this — for, to every- thing there is a time and a reason. This is our theme. For the seniors their time is almost at an end. As seniors we ll always remember move-up day, senior rings, electing senior queen, honor cards, the last pep meeting, class plays, commence- ment, and finally graduation. A time for memories! The 1970 Memoirs staff has tried to make this book act as a mir- ror and reflect some of the memories you have had on the hill. CilULS, r it yorusELF [ FELLED FOll THE SADIE HAWKINS DANCE 3 There is a time . . . To Everything There Is A Season To everything there is a season And a time tor every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die,- A time to plant, a time to reap; A time to kill, a time to heal; A time to laugh, a time to weep. A time to build up, a time to break down; A time to dance, a time to mourn; A time to cost away stones, A time to gather stones together. A time of love, a time of hate; A time of war, a time of peace,- A time you may embrace, A time to refrain from embracing. A time to gain, a time to lose; A time to rend, a time to sew; A time to love, a time to hate; A time for peace, I swear it's not too late. To everything there is a season And a time for every purpose under heaven. 4 5 A time for love for singing for music for prayer . . . 6 A lime to dance . . . 8 It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that gave the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories.'' — Carl Qandburg 10 Dedicated to you — the Student A variety of faces and personalities make a school. On the first day of school the faces fall into certain catego- ries — the frightened eyes of a freshman, the over- confident smirks of sophomores, the grave faces of jun- iors lamenting the year of heavy assignments to come, and the look of authority and success dominating the features of every senior. As the year progresses, the faces lose the similarity and develop into individual beings. Deep, meaningful friendships grow to be even more so in the time between the first frightening day on the Hill and the last exciting year in W.l. Such is the way of students in this school. Friends chat- ting between classes, meeting after school, cheering as one voice at a game, speaking as individuals in the class- room, each striving for a goal, but working together to achieve recognition for Washington Irving. We, the staff of the 1970 Memoirs, feel it is only prop- er to dedicate this yearbook to the people who represent the school every day, the students. 11 Educators Their faces show that our teachers put their hearts and minds into their work. Search their faces. You will find enthusiasm, scholarship, character, experi- ence, and love for their work and their students. 13 Administration In the fall of 1967, Mr. James E. Bennett came to W.l. to act as principal. During the three years he has served, Wl has moved up in social standing in Clarksburg and improved in various aspects. Firm, fair, and positive, Mr. Bennett guides the destiny of W.l. The position of assistant high school principal has been filled by Mr. Haymond Plaugher. He is in charge of attendance, the lockers, and most discipline cases. The yearbook staff wishes to thank them for their pa- tience and understanding. Mr. James E. The needed ones Assistants Running the school without the help of Student Assistants would be a very difficult task. These students ease the duties of the faculty by performing small jobs. Honors 145 In Appreciation The 1970 Memoirs Staff wishes to recognize Miss Pearl Custer. We wish to express our hearty thanks and sincere appreciation to her. During the years she has been with us. Miss Custer has proven herself to be beyond compare. We can do little in return for her priceless gift of understanding and patience, ex- cept to say with deepest gratitude, Thank You.' Since this is Mrs. lone McGee s lost year to be in- cluded on the Washington Irving staff, we wish to thank her. First coming to Washington Irving in the fall 1956, she has taught English courses to various classes. Mrs. McGee has spent long hours grading themes and tests, and planning lessons. Through teaching and encouragement, students are well pre- pared academically for the future. For this, they are grateful. After this year, Mrs. McGee will retire from teaching. We wish to pay special tribute to this woman — this educator. Alcott Disappointment was experienced by our Hilltoppers in their opening game. Howev- er, refusing to become discouraged, they came back to win four straight games. During the remainder of the season our boys suffered four more disappointments and finished with a credit of five wins and five losses. The Hilltoppers were a wonderful team. Wl versus Lewis County September 26, 1 969 The team rolled up a highly respectable 4-1 record with their hard fought 8-6 victory over Lewis County. Wl versus Bridgeport October 3, 1969 The first half of the game proved very promising for the Hilltoppers, but Wl suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Bridgeport Squawmen. Throughout the game the Hill- toppers relied on their rugged defensive to thwart off FW drives. The Wl offense sput- tered several times deep in Fairmont territo- ry, as it was plagued by fumbles, penalties, and interceptions. The highlighters for Wl were the determined Marshall Angotti, who raced 55 yards on a quarterback sneak, and Manuel Alvarez, who picked up a FW fumble caused by Vince D'Annunzio and rambled for 36 yards. After the kickoff, Danny Richards scored from the 1 9, capping a 64 yard Hilltopper drive. A Notre Dame fumble caused by Tom Cobb was recovered by Jeff Stanley on the 24 yardline. Six plays later, quarterback Mar- shall Angotti plunged in from the 1 yard mark for the winning touchdown. The final score . . . 18-14, vic- tory for Wl! The team showed eagerness, worked conscientiously and gave their all to accomplish victory. Despite a lacking of previous Varsity and training experience, their hustle, determination and never-say-die spirit made them a definite threat to their experienced foes and rivals. With the tremendous amount of potential re- turning next year, the 70 Hilltoppers will cer- tainly be a top contender for the Big Ten number one spot.
