THE EMPTY CLASSROOM I was sitting alone in the schoolroom last night. It was quiet, the children were gone, I glanced out, over the empty seats, And saw faces of those who'd passed on. Seated directly in front of me, Smiling, with eyes of blue, Was Jimmy Reed, the eraser thrower, He used to throw hand grenades too. Beyond him, in this hazy dream, Was solemn Emmett Ash, Another star in the classroom flag, He died in an airplane crash. Richard, Bill, John, Bob,- My eyes went down the list, They all had died on foreign soil, Do they know, how they are missed? They were laughing, joking and playing, And my mind slipped into the past, They were dressed in Khaki and Navy Blue, Just as I'd seen them last.
