Dear Graduates of 1957: Your theme is very close to my heart for my mind is full of happy memories of classes in my chosen subject of History. Some people may think that, since the present is so overwhelming, we have little time to go back through old documents and search for buried cities or weathered parchments. Yet, to the student of History, the earth-shaking events in Europe are understandable only in the light of past events, stresses and traditions. The on-going activities in a school offer a definite parallel to the exciting events of the outside world. The successes and strengths can be traced to the ideals and traditions of teachers and students of many years ago. Washington lrving High School is singularly fortunate in its history for we have the advantage of an educational genius as a founder, devoted and dedicated teachers, loyal students and successful alumnae. You will soon join the ranks of that celebrated throng of valiant women who keep alive our emphasis on the singular responsibility women must assume in this troubled world. l congratulate you and wish you well, and assure you that I have many happy memories of the Class of 1957 who have contributed so markedly to the good name of Washington Irving High School.
