ri-port from vit hall Dear Members of the Class of June 7953: Washington lrving in his foreword to the 1860 Edition of Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York says: The main object of my work, in fact, had a bearing wide from the sober aim of history, but one which, I trust, will meet with some indulgence from poetic minds. lt was to embody the traditions of our city in an amusing form, to illustrate its local humars, customs and peculiarities: to clothe home scenes and places and familiar names with those imaginative and whimsical associations so seldom met with in our new country, but which live like charms and spells about the cities of the old world, binding the heart of the native inhabitant to his home. Your Yearbook will have a similar record of the traditions, scenes and familiar names with, we hope, the imagination and whimsical associations so that through it you can relive your time at Washington lrving in the days to come. We trust that these school days have prepared you in the very best sense for the future which none of us can foresee. It is said that cl survey of a town in Connecticut shows that SOCK: of the jobs held did not exist fifty years ago, so many of you will be doing things that we never dreamed of. Your training here has been fundamental, however, so that you know the standards of right and wrong, of proper dealing with your neighbor, of the correct attitude toward authority, and of love for your country. There will be great changes in our city when jet planes and perhaps rocket ships are everyday sights, but the basic philosophy of western civilization will never perish. We must never forget these truths-even in the stresses and strains of world conflict. When you think of Washington Irving High School, remember her motto-Industry, Intelligence, Integrity-and try ta live up to it. I congratulate you and wish you well. Know that we are always ready to com- miserate with you in your sorrows and rejoice with you in your happiness. Z, Wfecwle Principal
