UUEEN UF HEARTS Dear Members of the Class of January 1951: ln these days of worry and tension, it is refreshing to write a message in the spirit of your theme, 'Susie in XfVonderland.H We tallc so much of atomic energy and its use for destructive ends that we forget the wonders and the heauty of our modern world. NVhen television was shown at the VVorld's Fair, people stood in lines for hours to see rather inane pictures. Now, 8,000,000 sets are used for amusement, hut more important, for culture and education. The hnished acting of leaders ol the American stage: the presentation of docu- mentary tilms, the demonstration of current allairs, such as the meetings ot the U N, should have lar reaching ellects on the thoughts and actions of a people who have the right to malce up their own minds. Now, improvements are heing made which will give us the vivid colors of the scenes we view. Cer- tainly, we shall have little excuse lor ignorance of the world ahout us. Television represents wonderful progress in the world of mechanics and sci- ence: does the world of the spirit fall in the category of wonderland? A cynic might answer the question in the negative, hut a person with not too long a memory can trace remarltahle progress in our attitude toward our fellow men. XV e have an intemational organization which has accepted a declaration of human rights: we have a state law which prohihits employment curhs hased on race, nationality and religion. You girls will go out into a world that is wonderful. Yet we lcnow there is much room for improvement in hoth aspects mentioned ahove. XVe here at XVashington lrving, have tried to give you the opportunities and experiences which will train you to talce your place in this world and worlc for its betterment.
