E I . - L , CLASS SONG All the years we've been in school together, Friends in work and play, All those years we've joined in fun together Must not end today. Always here, our school will keep alive Our mem'ries that we'll cherish evermore. In our work, our lessons here will guide us: On through life we'll keep you close beside us, 'Til the years when goals are reached and struggle disappears, Remember us proudly through the years. As we go we'll not forget our high school, All the fun we've had. Ne'er forget our teachers and our schoolmates Whom we leave behind. We'll return, no matter how the years May travelg they cannot come between. Later on when we look back on school days, We will think of times we studied hard. 'Til the years when goals are reached and struggle disappears, Remember us proudly through the years. Onward now, we strive into the future Of this world reknown, Hoping that we'll never break the friendships That weive always known. XVe'll come back to see our high school dear No matter how far away or near. Through the years we'll soon forget those trials, Looking forth to years of joy and gladness, 'Til the years when goals are reached and struggle disappears, Remember us proudly through the years. Our wagons were gathered at the small settle- ment of Tarrytown on the eastern shore of the Hudson River. XVe selected as our guide Connie Hahn, well-known fur trapper, surveyor and friend of the Indians. Her seryices in redeeming our band of pioneers from difficulties and her ceaseless aid will never be forgotten by the 49ers. Soon our wagon tiun w as proyisioned md ready to leaye on its four year trtnseontmental journey WH. hated to leave behind eight yeaxs of peaceful living but the tl ought of adyenture thrilled us As pioneers of learning we settlers soon became acclimated to all hardships, and were able to reap the benefits of hard work Our tray el had not progressed far along the Cum berland Road before we w ere eonfronted by Indians Fierce, sayage, and one year oldel than we, these Indians initiated us to the hudships of pioneering Connie Hahn, pleifier and guide elme to our rescue and tutned the sknmisli into 1 gill affair of dancing and feasting After this experienee our journey progressed more slowly Ior days and days we saw new flees One day in Mtreh 1847, while we w ere sitting around the elmp fire singing Oh Suslnni, 1 messenger rode into camp and told us of the gold discoyery in California The ezmp brolee into an uprolr Out guide rod out of eimp to the SLI1I'0UI'XLlll'lg settlements and muted them to eome to our stupendous 49ers Irolic and shut in out good foitune BLAZING THE TRAIL M4 JT S-4 1-AT 'xi-xi.F77+ Af A Ja.- -fi? 2 f. 4 fe?- A1 TN ..f- 4-4.-A the 49ers. Westward From then on there was no holding We went ahead in leaps and bounds. Ho became the cry as we pressed ever onward. and gone. Our wagons wheeled their way over plains and through narrow mountain passes. NWe were ever striving for the gold in dem dar hills, the gold of knowledge. Before we realized it Summer was here Dreams of the future danced before our eyes. The Futurama was the theme of the life that lay ahead. We pressed onward over the great plains nearer our goal In the euly spring of 1848 we had reached the Mormon settlement in Utah W hile our wagons were being proyisioned for the final lap of our jour nes, we went on tour of the settlement It was our good fortune to find that Boy Wanted, comedy in three acts was being presented by a band of mmstrels We all enjoyed the performance tre mendously Our wagon train was now again ready to leaye As we crossed the Sierras, the cold grew bitter and one of our beloved friends fell ill and died Her death eiused great sorrow and many settlers turned their w tgons and returned but the rest of us went on and finally re iehed sunny California We all agreed that this last part of our journey hid been the hardest There were many tests of our eouiage but we 49ers who had suppressed all ob stieles were doubly benefited Onee in California, we all joined the gold rush md staked our elaims After choosing the choice lots, we laid our settlement on the shore of the Ptcifie Oeean We danced and dreamed of those magic lands Beyond the Sea The last year of our journey was the most en joy able The three years of experience that lay be hind held many fond memories As we wheeled our way from Oregon to California, the Pacific Ocean lay at our side This wide expanse presented new worlds to explore and conquer, new places to see, and new friends to make Our wagon tram dispersed at San Irmciseo in late June 1849 W all agreed that our experiences had dey elopcd us into well lounded men ind women eapable of overcoming all obstacles whleh might he n the path of life Whetlaer we truel north, west, elst, or south, Come Ram or Shine, the friendships we have made will never be fogotten and out minds will often wander ovet the pleasant memories of the past -af. ' TENNIS Since an insufficient number of boys for a tennis team expressed .1 desire to play, there was no actual competition with other schools. But the boys did not let this obstruct their love for the game. Every three days the team was out under the hot sun with the coach. They were not out there to trifle but to improve their game so that they might have a better team in the coming season. HORSESHCES ln the spring of last year a sport which has been popular for years outside the school was introduced into the confines of XV.l.H.S. by Conch Beck. Horseshoes was played by the Faculty as well as the students, The students were divided into two classesg the Seniors and the -luniors were Class A and the Sophomores and the lfreshmen were Class B. Both Mr. Nelson and Mr. Beck hope that this year competition will be keener and that more boys will take an interest in this sport. 1 Q , -r' h Q i lv, ,4- 15 li' I' 1. Hosp. AI. Young The girls' softball team, under the direction of Mrs. Dane, had a very successful and enjoyable year. At a play-day at Irvington High School, the Washington Irving team won top honors and each girl was presented with a gift. This team, com- posed of the ten best players from our physical education classes included: Peggy Van Derzee, Marie Ulacco, Maryanne Kotes, Barbara Deverill, Carol Mae Losee, Joyce Hartline, Lucille De Carlo, Sally Murray, Joan Hosp, and Joanne Young. Prior to this year the girls have played softball in the fall and in the spring, so that they have had more practice in it than in any other sport. This year they shall play softball in the spring since we have had field hockey for the fall. This spring, Mrs. Dane ran an inter-class 'round robin, in softball, culminating in a play-day with other schools. Some of the most outstanding players on the class teams were: Ruth Johnson, Rose Calao, Mary Duffy, Joan Moore, Betty Jane Speno, Nancy Sawyer, Mildred DeMichele, Joan Graham, Adrienne Aaronson, Mary See, Myrtle Butterbaugh, Theresa Thrombone, Harriet Nicols, and Marjorie Hofstedt. S. Smith, P. Gommi, N. Ellsworth, P. Van Derzee, A. Ains- worth, C. Losee In the beginning of the Girls' Tennis season, quite a number of girls tried to make the team, but the squad needed to be reduced to eight players. Mrs. Dane, the instructor, taught the team the funda- mentals of playing tennis. Later the team started their tennis games. Two tournaments were held. Both were with Irvington. The first game was held in Irvington. The second was played on our own courts. In Ir- vington, the team won the game of singles and won one game of the doubles. On our own courts, the tennis team won both the single games and the double games. The majority of the members ol' the Girls' Tennis Team graduated in 1948, so, in order to keep up their good standing, more members will have to be enlisted. The team consisted of Carol Mae Lossee, Ann Ainsworth, Peggy Van Derzee, Barbara Gommi, Priscilla Gommi, Sue Smith and Nancy Elsworth.
