N. Week. It was a gay time for all, but during tht excitement one word was always in the mind of the people. That word was united , united people, united nations, a united world. W'e have been through Z1 terrible war and now people desire a true and lasting peace. Out of this desirt grew the United Nations which now calls for everyone's common support in order to maintain this peace. In our book we strive to show, on a small scale, how we may all be united in peace. Page four 7 We, the class of '48, dedicate this Alhambra to what We feel, with fervid hope and intense desire, is the nucleus of world freedom and cooperation-The United Nations. In childhood We have seen the most diabolical war ever to have been fought. None of us were untouched and all of us remember only too well the agony of War and what it meant to the world. Therefore, it is only right that we who are going into the world now, a world that forever needs youth to awaken it, a world that more than ever needs fighters for democracy, should do all in our power to further the ideals of our country and to support the United Nations, our Weapon in the fight for world freedom. May our class, through a Whole-hearted and united effort, assure to the world of tomorrow the ideals which We, as youths and future citizens, do hereby aspire. Our officers this year are: Lois Leslie, Presidentg Dorothy Grinnell, Vice- President, Joan Hudson, Secretary, and Claire Gatyas, Treasurer. Since our purpose is to promote better relationships among the girls of our school and to be of service to our school and community, we have a great number of girls who want to join the club every year. This year the girls who became members went through a strenuous but friendly in- itiation, after which they emerged with smiling faces from the cafeteria only to find that they had to wear their hair in pigrails, no jewelry, and nc make-up, and nailpolish on every other finger! However, everyone who was initiated, survived and enjoyed it. Besides assisting the Parent Teach- ers' Association at its card parties and meetings, we also had dinners on spe- cial occasions. In the spring we gave a dance and took our annual trip to New York City to see a Broadway Play. Our final event of the year was the dinner given in honor of the girls in the Senior Class who belong to the club. This dinner was, as always, a sue- cess and it was enjoyed by everyone. GIRLS' HI-Y The Girl's Hi-Y with Miss Beik as Advisor, started a very active year. De- spite the fact that this organization is rather new in Washington Irving, it is steadily becoming one of the most outstanding clubs in our school. The girls hold their meetings on XVednesday evenings at the local Y. M. C. A. Here they plan the various ac- tivities of the club. They have participated in both the county and state conventions. Their bill was proposed at the Ywfestehester Area Assembly at W'hite Plains and later two members went to the State Convention at Albany where the bill YVJS pflsscd. The officers elected this year are: Carol Mae Losee, President: Lois Tvson, Vice-President: Peggy Bowles, Secre- tary: Beverly Eaton, Treasurer: and Joyce Hartline, Chaplain. CRAFT CLUB The Craft Club. like most clubs this year started late because of U. N. W eek. W'e elected offieers who were as follows: President, Bob XVilliamsg Vice- President, Roland Williamsg Secretary, Keith Hoveyg Treasurer, Dick W'ood and Mr. O,Toole, Advisor. Our Club's chief aim is to give the students who do not have an oppor- tunity to use the shop during the school day an opportunity to do so after school. The club sold author buttons de- signed solely by President Bob Wil- liams. The club sponsored the Fisher Body Craft Guild Competition which in- cluded the showing of a motion picture on the subject. MATH CLUB The President of the Math Club this year is Thomas 'Yarascakg Program Chairman, John Cummingsg Secretary- Treasurer, Virginia Gommig and Ad- visor, Miss Hahn. The purpose of this club is to fur- ther the interests of Mathematics among the students in Washington Irving. We have learned in our meet- ings the use of the slide rule and the relation between mathematics and the stars. In other meetings we had quiz- zes and our annual mathematical treasure hunt. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB After many years of absence the Photography Club is again included among clubs at W'ashington Irving. The officers for the year are: President, Richard Teachmang Vice-President, Richard Ifriendg Secretary-Treasurer, Mary Jane Lessigg with NIr. Gray as Advisor. Since this is its first year the Photog- raphy Club has not undertaken too many projects. A brief course in Pho- tography is given this year. The Club helps to improve the skill of the per- son behind the camera! Perhaps this was not o11e of the greatest teams that has performed for XVashington Irving, but it w.1s .1 team with a fighting heart that upset all pre-season pre- dictions by winning nine straight games before losing a close one to a highly favored North Tarrytown quintet. The starting five, made up of three Seniors, Cieorge lligle, Billy Byrne, litl Materne and two Qluniors, lfranls Nichols and -loc liyrne pi-oy-ed to be .1 thorn in the side of many Ll favored team. This quintet was ably supported by Ralph Clolao. Harold Ross, -lack Barrett, Ronnie Coles, liugene Nlalaspina, and Art See. Mr. Nelson, the tean1's fine coach, is looking Page forty-ti:-0 forward to a successful season next year with a team possibly composed of lfrank Nichols, -loe Byrne, -Iaclt Barrett, Harold Ross, .intl Ronnie Coles, plus several promising players who will move up from this year's junior Varsity. The -Iunior Varsity, coached by Mr, Leccese. beginning with .1 green team, which lacked ex- perience, turned into a smooth passing outfit that gave every team in the league considerable trouble. Both coaches were new at XY'ashington lr- ing this year and at the close of the season they said that they l1ad never worked with a finer group of athletes and are loolsing forward to next year's successful season. I I .aiu FOOTBALL The past football season turned out to be .1 building project in every sense of the word. With the exception of two yeterans, the Varsity Squad was made up of green, unseasoned material. In the first two games with Long lieaeh and Danbury, the boys showed some real puneh and much promise. This faded, however, after the de- feat by Peekskill. The next three games with Hicksville, Yonkers, and Ossining showed definite marking of a team down and unable to Shake off its losing outlook. Against their last two rivals they demonstrated the quality of whieh real teams are made. Al- though defeated by North Tarrytown. they were never out-fought or out-classed. Pleasantville was fortunate in drawing a tie seore although XV. I. out-played them throughout the game. As a final summary our boys showed a great lack of game experience, which is only natural. But they also showed a world of promise for the coming year and years. The Junior Yarsity Squad was late in starting because Coach Stearns was needed in assisting var- sity work. However, the team made a notable aeeount of itself in all its games and its big objective was at- tained. It reeeiyed a sound background in funda- mental drill work.
