M Washington High School WHS If The Center 0 Communiq 4 i The dedication ceremony is attended by many interested citizens. Actiafit The school is an essential part of the community of Wfashington. The facilities of the building are used frequently by local organizations. Basketball, one of the most popular sports in our town, has a great following of both students and other citizens in this locality. The school and community combine their efforts to make the Homecoming parade a success by decorating attractive floats. XVHS is truly the center of community activity. Two of the most attractively decorated floats in the Homecoming parade are the prize-winning A junior float and the Beta Club float. 5 WHS . . . ferwke T 0 The junior Red Cross members are busily at work making favors for these who are confined by illness. ... ,, The Melody Lads, Jerry Barton George Carnes, Bud Garland and john Johnson, are in cle- mand by groups desiring musical entertainment. 6 a Communigl The students of WHS participate in programs helping to serve the community in many ways. A few of these services are collections for polio, tuberculosis, and heart disease, and such varying activities as the provision of entertainment by the Music Department and the assistance of the farmer by the Agriculture Department. The students con- tribute much of their time and effort to make XWHS of service to the community. V 2 fl In 1949, the High School Varieties program was started at Station WFML. Here the defending Sophomore team in Current Events, Richard Cline, Harry Ross, and Charles Rose, meets the chal- lenging juniors, jerry Barton, Max Summers, and Mary Glezen. The Girls Ensemble provides entertainment for the dedication ceremonies of the North Side School. Those participating are Mrs. Alvin Seal, Connie Weddle, Velma Chestnut, Marilyn Shafer, Judy Thompson, Marilyn Seal, Linda Wfedeking, Jo Davis, Gretchen Chickedantz, and Deanna Dye. , J.: MX. WHS Tmim For The Nancy Hobson, who is taking dictation from Mr. Robert Chambers, is just one of the many students receiving practical office experience during her school career. 8 A familiar scene which occurs at the end of May Future The students of our school, through their associations with fellow students and teachers, gain the knowledge and experience which will help them to succeed in whatever tasks they may undertake. A WHS art student puts the finishing touches on one of the windows of a downtown establishment during the annual window painting contest. The acquisi- tion of a press roorn this year has enabled the staff members to maintain a planning, writing, and production cycle with a minimum of wasted effort. Ernie Culbertson, photographer, and Lester Gilmore, sports, prepare negatives of pages from which metal plates will be made in preparation for printing on the multilith machine. The offset process has enabled Ink-Ovation to publish a semi- monthly school paper with pictures and line drawings at little cost. Writing and rewriting are only the pre- liminary operations required to publish a school newspaper. Terry Overholser, sports, Orlan Eck, page editor, Reba Cannon, exchange, and Sue Stephenson, assistant editor are typing copy, doing page make-up, and making headlines. Other steps handled in each issue process are covering beats, selling and composing ads, opaquing negatives, and taking care of exchange with other schools. Each staff member serves as a page editor one semester or more. This year, for the first time, the initiates were the guests at a formal banquet and were addressed by the national archer Tom Grady. The regular sports activities include basketball, volleyball, tennis, archery, and bowling, with two play-days annually to which other schools are invited. Among their money-making projects are bake sales, the sale of streamers at the sectional, and the Flunker Fling, which is held in cooperation with the Student Council. The highest award offered in this organization is the school sweater, for which a girl must have earned 500 points. This year's recipients of the sweaters are Judy Campbell, Nancy Forbes, Alice Rude, Cheryl Godwin, Deloris Cottee, Brenda Leonard, and Mae- jeanne Eaton.
