GERALD ALEXANDER Mr. Alexander has been our superintendent of schools since 1943, during which time his genial nature has Won for him many friends. Any student interested in becoming a Good Neighbor or a trans-Atlantic traveler should enroll in this depart- ment, which offers Latin, Spanish, and French. Even those not so ambitious will find their lives enriched by this taste of the literature of other nations. Mrs. Martin helps a group of Latin students. Ulzysicczl flvlzifccitimz This is the course in which every boy and girl takes an active part. lt is beneficial to those physically able to par- ticipate in that it develops strong bodies as Well as sportsmanship, leadership, and fellowship. The organization held a Spring Concert March 29, which was a great success. On March 22, several members participated in the Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Terre Haute. All placed either first or second division. The band also entered the Central and Southern lndiana Band Contest held at Bedford April 27. 44542 livin. The Beta Club, sponsored by Mrs. Martin, is a national honorary scholastic society for students maintaining a B average. The Washington chap- ter, the first in Indiana, was organized in 1938. The club was organized in March, l945 under the direction of Miss Sylvia Orr. This was a move- ment toward democratic school government, to foster a feeling of cooperation among the students and to promote in every way the best interests of the school. The Student Council sponsored the election of the basketball queen at the beginning of the season, and the Bunny l-lop in March was their contri- bution to the schools social activities for this year. XQQAJS 24 CO CHES Mr. Ray Scott Mr. Lloyd Wagner This is Mr. Scotts fourth year as coach at Washington High School. He coached basketball at Martinsville, lndiana before coming to Washington. Besides shouldering the tremendous task of coaching basketball, football, and baseball, he also instructs classes in physical education, health, and safety. Washington High School is fortunate in having Mr. Scott as a member of the faculty. Mr. Wagner is Mr. Scotts trusty assistant. He coaches the seventh and eighth and freshman teams, thus preparing the younger boys for the varsity team. The student body regrets to see Elsie graduate this year after two years of faithful service. Although he did not start with the regulars, his ability Was recognized and we are expect- ing much from him next season. Melburn Haney 5' l Dugan played guard all season. He is a good shot from any place c7625 Haney Naylor Hastings on the floor and has pulled the team out of tight places by hitting long shots. Billy Naylor 5' ll Since this Was Bills first year as a varsity Hatchet he has not really had a chance to show his ability. He is a junior and Will be back next year. David Hastings 5' lO Dave, a junior, was one of the liveliest boys on the squad. He is shifty and an excellent floorman. He has a keen eye for the basket and We will be expect- ing a lot from Dave next year. Wampler Bateman Page Clifford Bateman 5' 10 Cliff is in his second year as a regular and has another year to go. He is a good shot and we hope to see him playing guard position again next year. Willard Page 6' l Willard played outstand- ing ball this season for a sophomore. This was his first year on the varsity team and he has shown his ability as a ball handler. Icrck Wampler 6' 3 Wamp played forward most of the year, but in some of the games traded positions with Opell.
