Since that time he has gained fame and recognition as composer, pianist, and orchestra leader. This year Iohnny made another contribution to his Alma Mater in the form of a melodi- ous Victory Song. He sent this song to us from New York City, where his orchestra is now playing, and his home town has received it with great acclaim and appreciation. W. H. S. VIH!!! -v HlHlHHY Ht lHl HHH The first school in Washington of which there is a record was the old Seminary Build- ing, which was built in l837. lt was erected on the corner of East Walnut and Sixth Streets, directly in front of the present lunior High School. This four-room building was used un- til l876-77, when, due to the necessity for' more room, the Walnut Streeet School was built. The Walnut Street School, which cost 540,000 was a brick structure with three floors both there and a basement, and was occupied by V9 .CTT the grade and high school. This has become a tradition because the school has carried these colors since that time. To accommodate the advanced classes, the present high school was built in l9l3 at the cost of 365,000 Domestic art, manual training, and physical training were the studies added to the curriculum at that time. From the beginning, the high school has made an excellent record in both scholastic and athletic activities. ln l930, Washington had a State Championship basketball team of which everyone was proud. The debating and Latin contestants always make a good showing wherever they go. Allen Field was bought in 1902 for athletics. ln l9l4, basketball was started with O. P. West as coach, and the first annual was published. A football team was organized in l897 with H. C. Wadsworth, its coach. The team was trained until l9ll and then given up. How- ever, it was taken up again in l936 and has Won a prominent place in sports. ln the fall of 1897 a boy by the name of Willard Mathews, who had quit school, de- 25 paid a great compliment. The orchestra lead- er, Malcolm lohnny lohnson, who graduated from Washington High School in l9l6, wrote a Victory Song for the school, which has been copyrighted. This song was introduced at a pep session on lanuary l5, l94l, by W. H. S. band, and will take the place of our former school song. W. H. S. is very proud to be the sole possessor of this Victory March. A Student Council was started this year with Mr. Russell and Miss Schmidt as its facul- ty advisers. This council meets once a Week for a half hour to discuss the opinions of the student body about matters concerning the school and its activities. Each home room has a representative who attends these meetings and it is his duty to inform his home room what the student council is doing. At present, Mr. Clyde Parker is superintend- ent of the city schools, and Mr. H. C. Wampler is principal of the high school. The enrollment is 1,047 and the faculty numbers 40. Beverly Vollmer.
