Once upon a time, Wash- ington Senior High School had a sky-high chimney that puffed in conventional state- liness from morn 'til setting of the sun. Then one day during a violent and raging thunderstorm the grand- daddy of all good chimneys was struck by a bolt of lightning and cracked wide open, revealing a kind heart and good, but a distinct need for renovation. There fol- lowed a stove-pipe smoker which commanded none of the alma mater patriotism enjoyed by the goodly grand- daddy - since deceased. Many moons passed, and the builders began to construct a more permanent model- one which could withstand the fury of midwestern thunderstorms and the heat of the students' sinister looks and disparaging remarks. For you see, the new-born chimney was composed of small, factory-made bricks instead of the personality- packed South Dakota granite slabs, hand hewn and lovingly placed. But alas, in spite of rain and sleet and unimaginative chimneys, the smoke must get out.
