N 4...-U Assistant Arnie Bauer BASKETBALL Starting the season with seven boys returning from lost year's championship team, Coach Diehl and his assistant, Arnie Bauer, put together another combination which brought Sioux Falls its second Class A title in as many years of play, This repeat performance had not been accomplished since Huron did the trick in I936 and l937. After finishing second in E S D. play, the local crew swept through the Seztional Tourney at Beresford by down- ing Canton and Vermillion to aualify for another chance at the state crown. This group of determined artists entered the state meet as defending champs well prepared to face o group of strong competitors, After disposing of Huron, 74-56, and Aberdeen, 60-46, they met the strong Rapid City Cob- blers in the finals This turned out to be a nip and tuck affair, and with the score knotted at 53-53, Mike Gibson sank a fielder to put the Warriors ahead to stay. A Rapid City basket was made too late to be tallied. ln pre-tournament play the local aggregation posted l6 wins while losing four in 20 games played. The losses were administered by Huron and Sioux City East once each, and by a strong Madison Central team twice. ln ES D. games the final results show ll wins and three losses for a second place finish. At the season's end, Bob Amundson, Mike Gibson, and Fred Hecker were selected as All-State performers while Chuck Anderson and lim Luce received honorable men- tion. This year Coach Wally Diehl steps out as head basketball mentor, and Arnie Bauer will take over the reins next year. With a group of stalwart performers returning, Washington High can look forward to another successful basketball season.
