Office Staff BEN ROSSOW has had the nerve wracking job of assistant principal for four years Perhaps the most interesting of his many duties is checking all irregularities and issuing seventh periods When a new semester begins he is surrounded by students who are dissatisfied with their new schedules In close connection with this Mr Rossow has complete charge of collecting and filing all absences Whenever R A Beck is absent he becomes the big boss of nearly two thousand students eighty teachers and the en tire office staff Even though he is in a position where he might well be disliked he has the ad miration of the entire student body MRS HELEN WHITMAN office secretary always has a ready smile for everyone who comes in Contact with her She can usually be found either signing absence excuses or answering the telephone Recording all of these absences takes up the better part of her day but she still finds time to do many odd iobs in the office one of these being the assigning of seventh periods' The daily bulletin and all the announcements for the day are typed and mimeographed by Mrs Whitman At the end of each semester she is kept doubly busy typing the final tests. An ac- cepted fact is that school just wouldnt be school without our secretary. MRSA ISMAY JOHNSON office registrar has the tedious job of keeping the records and files of the entire student body and faculty of WHS. This means that she must record all the grades of a student from the time he enters Washington High until he graduates, From the material found on these records and trait cards, she pre- pares transcripts for students who are planning on going to college or applying for work. Since all inquiries on WHS alumni are directed to Mrs. Johnson, a record must be kept of all graduates as well as the present students, For twelve years Mrs, Johnson has proven an invaluable friend to students who need trait information.

Cffice Staff FRED KOHOUTEK, gen'al senior class adviser, has quite a time playing Daddy to some three hundred thirty-four seniors, He acts as police- man at all the class meetings and is the tem- porary chairman of the class before the president and Other officers are elected in the fall. One of Mr, Kohoutek's biggest contributions to the senior class is securing caps and gowns for the graduation ceremonies Another big headache is the administration of the State Senior Tests. His is the final word on all the senior activities. Because he works so closely with his candidates for graduation, they all know him to be one swell guy, WALLY DIEHL holds the most important posi- tion in the athletic department of WHS. Since he took over the office in l949, he has proven that he is capable of conducting his division with the same proficiency shown by the late Howard Wood. During the basketball season, Wally puts in extra time to handle the coaching duties of the varsity basketball team. His mastery in this position was established when he produced an ESD champion during his first year at the helm. Although it is a difficult task to satisfy the sports interests of nearly 2,000 students, he has still upheld our athletic prestige among the schools throughout the state. D. R. GOLDSMlTH'S job as WHS' vocational guidance director makes him the confidant and adviser of all working students. Goldie, as he is called by his friends, is frequently asked by downtown employers to recommend students who are seeking part-time employment, If they are accepted, he gives them a work permit and in- structions to report to him once a week. lf a stu- dent changes jobs, Mr. Goldsmith must be in- formed about it. By working half days and tak- ing a course called public relations, a student may earn two credits a semester, which often solves the problem of going to school and work- ing at the same time. Surely Mr, Goldsmith is a valuable asset to WHS. f-
