This year we have dedicated our book to a lady for whom the proper words to express our gratitude cannot be found, Expressions such as wonderful, kind, sym- pathetic, brilliant, and ambitious seem insignificant when com- pared to her character. lf Miss Joy l-lamrin were to be judged by her material ac- complishments alone, she would still be a great ladyg but when she is rated according to the in- tangible standards of merit, her character and lite take on the sheen and color of tine gold. Not only tor what you are, but for what you have done tor us, we honor you, Joy l-lamrin. Foreword Another year has been marked in the milestone of knowledge. For some it is their last year of formal training - for others, only the beginning. ln the following pages we have endeavored to portray a true picture of your life and activ- ities during the school term. We hope you enjoy it and will keep this volume as a treasure chest of memories. '5 l WARRIOR STAFF IIINIINIIWHIIH IH III II HH Sl 2.71 1- m GT -1 w 'U f-v- Q C C - 2? An ac- cepted fact is that school just wouldnt be school without our secretary. MRSA ISMAY JOHNSON office registrar has the tedious job of keeping the records and files of the entire student body and faculty of WHS. This means that she must record all the grades of a student from the time he enters Washington High until he graduates, From the material found on these records and trait cards, she pre- pares transcripts for students who are planning on going to college or applying for work. Since all inquiries on WHS alumni are directed to Mrs. Johnson, a record must be kept of all graduates as well as the present students, For twelve years Mrs, Johnson has proven an invaluable friend to students who need trait information. Cffice Staff FRED KOHOUTEK, gen'al senior class adviser, has quite a time playing Daddy to some three hundred thirty-four seniors, He acts as police- man at all the class meetings and is the tem- porary chairman of the class before the president and Other officers are elected in the fall. One of Mr, Kohoutek's biggest contributions to the senior class is securing caps and gowns for the graduation ceremonies Another big headache is the administration of the State Senior Tests. His is the final word on all the senior activities. Because he works so closely with his candidates for graduation, they all know him to be one swell guy, WALLY DIEHL holds the most important posi- tion in the athletic department of WHS. Since he took over the office in l949, he has proven that he is capable of conducting his division with the same proficiency shown by the late Howard Wood. During the basketball season, Wally puts in extra time to handle the coaching duties of the varsity basketball team. His mastery in this position was established when he produced an ESD champion during his first year at the helm. Although it is a difficult task to satisfy the sports interests of nearly 2,000 students, he has still upheld our athletic prestige among the schools throughout the state. D. R. GOLDSMlTH'S job as WHS' vocational guidance director makes him the confidant and adviser of all working students. Goldie, as he is called by his friends, is frequently asked by downtown employers to recommend students who are seeking part-time employment, If they are accepted, he gives them a work permit and in- structions to report to him once a week. lf a stu- dent changes jobs, Mr. Goldsmith must be in- formed about it. By working half days and tak- ing a course called public relations, a student may earn two credits a semester, which often solves the problem of going to school and work- ing at the same time. Surely Mr, Goldsmith is a valuable asset to WHS. f- R. A. Beck, Principal The Big Three R, A, Beck, principal, heads the entire WHS tac- ulty and student bocy He is the one who sees that everything functions smoothly around schools When- ever a guest on or problem arises, a final decision must come from him, A few of his many iobs are the supervision ot classrooms, study halls, and as- semblies. Besides this he is also in charge of eval- uating grades and planning classroom schedules. Lyman M Fort's job as superintendent ot public schools for Sioux Falls places upon him the task of making many final decisions The last word in selecting teachers for our public schools comes from him, l-le also hands down decisions concern- ing all school problems Approving the courses of- fered in the curriculum and supervising the main- tenance of buildings are other important duties. Lastly, he passes judgment on all problems that arise from the administration. E, W. Skarda is the first assistant superintendent of public schools Sioux Falls has ever had. Although his work consists mainly in assisting Mr, Fort, he spends most of his time handling the problems of the elementary schools of the city, l-le also serves on the building committee of the Board of Educa- tion and assists in districting the schools. LOCK in the record books of Mr. Kremer and Mr. Berk- ley and see for yourself the accomplishments made by the Washington High School speech department, The experienced debate team, under Mr, Berkley, proved themselves an asset to our schools rating in speech activities, as they won 8754 of their debates prior to the state tourna- ment Their record of lO7 wins and i6 losses includes victories at the NFL and Big Eight tourneys at Mitchell, Washington High School sponsored the first debate team from South Dakota to capture first place honors at the Con- cordia College tournament, Mr. Kremer's in- experienced team showed future talent as they took first at Canton against more experienced debaters, in addition to bringing home the trophy from the Watertown Speech Festival. Besides debate, WHS produced winners in declam, ora- tory, and extemporaneous speaking, The speech department also sponsored four radio programs each month, which included department surveys, plays, and other programs with student and fac- ulty participation, The dramatics department offered such student productions as Rich Man, Poor Man, Out of the Frying Pan, Dust of the Road, Cne Foot in Heaven, The Young and Fair, and The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden, Through the above accomplish- ments it can be sazd that our speech department is successfully making the name of Washington H gh tops in speech activities. Left, Speech Directors L. Kremer and D. Berkley. VX3 Paul Kolb and Soiveig Maakestad discuss the play Gut of the Frying Pan The girl who saw the murder will rise, She will walk to the bed and pull away the blanket, The audience sat on the edges of their seats as they watched this scene from Out of the Frying Pan. The action of the play is centered around six would- be-actors -S George lDan Lennoni, Norman CDon Veglahni, Tony lRod Watsonl, and three girls - Dottie lSolveig Maakestadi, Kate Clvlarcie lvlyhrai, and Marge lTish Rustadl. They all live in the same apartment for two reasons, The first is that Mr. Kenny Uerry Bordeni, a famous Broadway producer, lives in the apartment below themg the second is the backstage. Don Veglahn finds playing detective not so easy l fact that none of them have money - except Dottie. Since Mr, Kenny is about to cast a road company for his show, the kids rehearse their play every day, but the big problem is how to get him upstairs to see it. lt so happens that he is an amateur chef, and has to borrow some flour for one of his culinary experiments. While he is in the apartment he agrees to watch the play, but runs into difficulties due to interrup- tions by Dottie's girl friend llvlarianne l-laugei, the landlady lCarolyn Johnsonl, and two policemen, played by Duff Erickson and Bob l-louser, The kids' ship comes in when Dottie's father lPauI Kolbi says he is going to have the outrageous play banned in Boston This is iust what Mr, Kenny has been waiting for, because any play banned in Boston is bound to be a hit. The production was directed by L, R. Kremer, with Joanne Jones and Carol Long act- ing as assistants. Rustad's screams fail to arouse the curiosity oi the sinister butler. lllllllll Bl x Dust of the Road rlsfrnas ga ns a nex rn n n an Peter Steele wlaen a man x lao calls lw l Dus eoadpstlnemax n n ,lu sfa 0 a 'H ' AO dollar ln lls tlae, ll d n o ke n When Judas leaves flvex PATL lately se+ out to fund 'r e man lx ofn Judas lw n o luv Mo earl er cofve to tne r d n s a e on lt n f pa ed tla rt ol rod n n We uncle ac Nelson The part or fler tee a d Buell Donaldson portrayed Ju s lscaro oo L xuomb fu 1 1. Debate What group of students would get up at the crack ot dawn on a Saturday morning to travel lOO to l5O miles to participate in a tourney? Debaters, ot course. Who else, besides a debater, would spend hours at the library looking up information on the Welfare State? The question under consideration this year by this select group ot students is: Resolved that the American people reject the Welfare State. The debaters are divided into two groups, one of which has 22 first year debaters directed by L. R. Kremer, and the other, an experienced squad of I4 members, coached by Dean Berkley, In an unfinished season the novice squad has won 37 debates and lost l9, while the experienced squad has won 57 and lost ll debates. Today our school offers many opportunities because of its wide variety of subjects. Girls now learn how to cook complete meals in cooking classes. A background of courses in auto mechanics, short- hand, typing, and printing is sufficient for those who don't plan to attend college, For the scientific minded, there are subjects in chemistry, physics, and higher mathematics, such as trig and advanced alge- bra. Anyone interested in extracurricular activities may do out for band, orchestra, chorus, speech, dra- matics, or practically any other field he is interested in. Washington l-ligh has a library service which offers the use of 9,000 books to its students and faculty. Since many colleges require a foreign language for entrance, our school provides courses in Spanish and Latin, Almost any subject will be taught if at least twenty students sign up for it. Some of the recent additions have been word elementals, senior bookkeeping, and world affairs. With the courses and facilities offered in Washing- ton High, no one can say that he cannot find any enjoyment in going to school.
