CADET BAND The Cadet Band participated for the first time in the Region four Music Festival held last spring in Gainesville, The 30 piece band gained a rating of excellent. This year the band has enlarged to 40 members and they will enter the Festival to be held in Athens, March 8. They have presented concerts jointly with the High School Band and joined with them at the last home football game to form W-H-S! At that time there were over 100 musicians on the field, SUN FESTIVAL fcontinuedj The big parade took place on the next day with meeny, meeny' floats, bands, and beauty queens. Our band was one of four which was applauded by the huge crowd at the Pavilion. Following a concert for the Fire Department that night, some went to the Joe Chitwood Thrill Show in a Fire Department truck driven by Mr. B while others spent much moo1a at the boardwalk and on the rides. Each day we ate together at a restaurant which was reserved for usg we took over the beach - and the ocean, the bus was at our beck and call, Prior to leaving Sunday morning, we all assembled at the Rec, Hall, where Rev. Owen Hoffman conducted our church service. Then we headed for home - tired, but happy for the good time we'd had. Many thanks go to the Myrtle Beach Fire Department, Chief James Callaway, Joe Dyson and the chaperones for a truly good time. The chaperones even agreed we'd behaved ourselves, as they knew we would, What more can be said of the trip than Lotsa sun! And lotsa fun!

Band officers were Joyce Bennett, President, Lawrence Burton, Vice Presidentg and Sally Ann Wickersham, Secretary and Treasurer. SUN-FUN FESTIVAL The trip made by the band to Myrtle Beach June 7-9 for the Sun-Fun Festival and the Miss South Carolina Beauty Pageant has a multitude of wonderful memories for the band and the chaperones. A chartered bus made the rather dismal-weathered trip to Myrtle Beach, but the weather was forgotten when we were greeted royally and warmly by the Myrtle Beach Fire Department members and their wives, who served our supper at the Rec, Hall, The boys were bedded at the Fire Department, while the girls were housed at the pine-paneled Recreation Hall about two miles from town, The girls were fortunate to have a free-playing juke box, a piano, and a ping-pong table, That night we were guests of the Fire Department at the first part of the Miss South Carolina Beauty Pageant, Luckily, we saw Marian McKnight, who now reigns as Miss America, as well as Mickey Spillane who was a judge, and Sharon Kay Rickey, the past Miss America.
