OUR SCHOOL From earliest time the lamp has been a symbol of learning, Its association with light, without which there would be no life, has something to do with this. The image of learning as a beacon light upon a high place is traditional, It is this symbol which we are try- ing to develop. We have here in our county a light that shines out as a symbol of learn- ing. This is our high school. l ALMA Washington High, our Alma Mater Here's a toast to you And to all our friends and classmates We will e'er be true. Many are the hours we've spent here Days and long years too But for all we'd not exchange them Dear Old Gold and Blue, 5 We are proud of our new county high school building. These pictures show different views of the front entrance as it looks today. With landscaping this entrance will take on a different look - but the same spirit or light that has shone so greatly in the past will continue to shine forth even more brilliantly. MATER 2. OUR SCHOOL Our school can be classed as a light or lamp that shines in the skies and sends its rays of light to the sky and causes us to know that there is hope and life in the future for those who are willing to keep the flame burning instead of desiring darkness, We know there is much to gain and nothing to lose by following the symbol of light and climbing higher, Washington High, our Alma Mater You have served us well And with grateful hearts we thank you More than we can tell. You have giv'n us our foundation That will help us through So we'll never cease to love you Dear Old Gold and Blue. View of bus unloading entrance Side entrance by the superintendent's office ..,,1l--- 0UR SCHOOL Wg 7x We must try to be one of the lights that shine in our school 'f 1 our teachers and parents are willing to lend a helping hand in every way possible. Be a shining bulb in this great light that stands on a hill in an a e th t g a needs men and women to be leaders or light bearers. li.. X Another View of the side entrance ' Fond memories are ours as we leave this old building. The past and I present will blend together for a greater future, Q Z Y-ul, itll-I 6 ...i 'Z A11 have one thing in common, a striving to develop W.H,S, students into well-rounded and useful citizens. .2-glllmfwi A LIGHTHOUSE OF AUTHORITY LEADS US ON MARSHALL A, GUILL Principal University of Georgia A. HIGH SCHOOL BAND A rating of excellent was received by the High School Band at the Region four Festival. They appeared at all the football games, both at home and awayg participated in the initial University of Georgia Band Day, marched in the Santa Claus Parade in Augusta and in Washington, and presented two concerts, This year's drum major was Mitchell Willis, head majorette, Dottie Shook, and majorettes Vivian Armour, Eleanor Powell, Genie Thomas, Dorothy Waters, and Sally Ann Wickersham. Band officers were Joyce Bennett, President, Lawrence Burton, Vice Presidentg and Sally Ann Wickersham, Secretary and Treasurer. SUN-FUN FESTIVAL The trip made by the band to Myrtle Beach June 7-9 for the Sun-Fun Festival and the Miss South Carolina Beauty Pageant has a multitude of wonderful memories for the band and the chaperones. A chartered bus made the rather dismal-weathered trip to Myrtle Beach, but the weather was forgotten when we were greeted royally and warmly by the Myrtle Beach Fire Department members and their wives, who served our supper at the Rec, Hall, The boys were bedded at the Fire Department, while the girls were housed at the pine-paneled Recreation Hall about two miles from town, The girls were fortunate to have a free-playing juke box, a piano, and a ping-pong table, That night we were guests of the Fire Department at the first part of the Miss South Carolina Beauty Pageant, Luckily, we saw Marian McKnight, who now reigns as Miss America, as well as Mickey Spillane who was a judge, and Sharon Kay Rickey, the past Miss America. i Emily C. CADET BAND The Cadet Band participated for the first time in the Region four Music Festival held last spring in Gainesville, The 30 piece band gained a rating of excellent. This year the band has enlarged to 40 members and they will enter the Festival to be held in Athens, March 8. They have presented concerts jointly with the High School Band and joined with them at the last home football game to form W-H-S! At that time there were over 100 musicians on the field, SUN FESTIVAL fcontinuedj The big parade took place on the next day with meeny, meeny' floats, bands, and beauty queens. Our band was one of four which was applauded by the huge crowd at the Pavilion. Following a concert for the Fire Department that night, some went to the Joe Chitwood Thrill Show in a Fire Department truck driven by Mr. B while others spent much moo1a at the boardwalk and on the rides. Each day we ate together at a restaurant which was reserved for usg we took over the beach - and the ocean, the bus was at our beck and call, Prior to leaving Sunday morning, we all assembled at the Rec, Hall, where Rev. Owen Hoffman conducted our church service. Then we headed for home - tired, but happy for the good time we'd had. Many thanks go to the Myrtle Beach Fire Department, Chief James Callaway, Joe Dyson and the chaperones for a truly good time. The chaperones even agreed we'd behaved ourselves, as they knew we would, What more can be said of the trip than Lotsa sun! And lotsa fun!
