CLASS l-IISTCDIQV The class ofJune 1937 has had both the opportunity and the responsibility of playing an important role in the establishment of traditions for Washington l'ligh School. With the promotion of this class simultaneously arose Washington l-ligh, as the class grew, so grew the school. It was in the first year of the senior department, namely 1934-1935, that activities of the class really began. The following were the first officers chosen: l.ucy Gallea, President, Edward Baldassare, Vice-President, Ethel l-lamburg, Secretary-Treasurer. The first social function was a tea at which an address was given on the subject, After l-ligh School-What? This was followed by a St. Patriclcs Day Party, the first dance of the senior class. The year 1935-1936 brought us closer to the goal of our high school education. The new year also brought the election of a new set of officers: Willard l'laase, President, l'loward Simmons, Vice-President, Michael Bobby, Secretary-Treasurer, Lena DelVecchio, Social Chair- man. The only social functions were the Thanlcsgiving Hop and the April Spring Frolic. Then came the most vital year in the class history, a year in which the final precedents were to be decided. So many traditions have been and are being established that some may not be herein justly recorded. At this time the final officers were elected: President, Willard l'laase, Vice- President, Franlc Quattrocchi, Secretary-Treasurer, Evelyn Balzer, Social Chairman, Franlc Sidora. The first question before the class was the name for the book in which these data are given. The three names considered each had definite connection with the great man after whom our school was named. OF the three, 'ipathfinderf' Shield, and Surveyor, the last received the largest number of Ayes Secondly, the class voted on the insignia for the school. The insignia, the Washington coat-of-arms, thus became that of the school, to appear on school pins and rings, which are to belong to the senior classes as well as to the school collectively. ln the last year the class sponsored l-lallowe'en and Valentine Socials to subsidize the Senior Annual. Early in the year the Classes of June 1937, January 1938, and June 1938 held a combined Thanlcsgiving Social. Oddly enough, the first senior class play to be presented was one written by a well-lcnown Rochester playwright, Philip Barry. It was his three-act comedy, mlhe Youngest, that turned the evening of March 19 into so great a success. The leading players of this comedy, Jaclc Pitliclc and Evelyn Balzer, were ironically each other's opponents for the office of School Community Vice-President in February, 1937. ln the month of May the seniors assembled with advisers and guests for the Senior Banquet, the culminating social activity before the graduation ceremonies. The Class ofJune 1937 entered Washington Junior High School with happiness and antici- pation, and now reluctantly depart from Washington Senior l-ligh School, in the evolution of which they played a significant part.
