I GROWING That is the word which best characterizes the 1970 school year at Washington High School. In a physical sense the school was transformed from five ramshackled portables into one of the most ultra-modern institutions of high school learning. Included in this was a campus composed of round classroom buildings and a field- house facility unique in its construction and use. . W A if 2 , x wk 4 . -.,,,.,, . New relationships were formed and a greater understanding among students was gained. From this year of growing Washington High School is mov- ing into what will hopefully be a year of fulfillment , Next year, with a full complement of students, the school will reach its highest level of excellence in scholastics, athletics, and pride. 8 Students Look any JF ef? The purpose of the Washington Freedom Press is to publish what is written by you, the student body, as well as the journalism students themselves. This paper attempts to act as a sounding board for your ideas, criticisms, and grievances. Likewise The Spirit of '70 wishes to give a true picture of life at our school throughout the year as seen through the eyes of the student body. Publications Take Time and Work Chris Satterlee works on proofreading the annual befor deadline. The only thing we hope to ac- complish is to remind you of what's going on. The publications at WHS are in two categories: the newspaper which is the now for only now and the annual which is the now for the future. Both do their job and hope they do it well, so we hope you enjoy the time and effort that was put into these pub- lications. jeff Hill, editor of The Freedom Press, relaxes after the works all done 30 A New and Challenging Concept at Washington is Forensics Forensics was a whole new concept to students at Washington-everything from debate to interpretive reading. Doesn't anyone care for the players out on the field? Don't we care enough to boost the team's spirit, even when loss is inevi- table? I have felt this way many times as I observed the rooting section, doing nothing but carrying on private conversations. It is not enough to merely be at the games, we must show our pride out loud, win or lose. PW D A Hans Woldseth- QB Steve Butt-FB The 1969 season was one of hard work, tough opposition, elated satisfaction, and bitter disap- pointment for the well-deserving football team. The year began on a somber and prophetic note as the Patriots broke into the strong SPSL with a heartbreaking 7-0 loss to Lakes. Throughout the season the team from WHS play- ed exceptional ball but lack of experience caused many Patriot mistakes and a general failure to cap- italize offensively on breaks in the game. Strong defense was evident throughout the year as Washington held six of eight tough SPSL teams to one touchdown or less. Highlighting the 1969 season were the two wins-- 27-0 over the hapless Rogers Rams, and 14-6 against an inspired Federal Way team. The season record, 2-6, was respectable, if not noteworthy, since it was in a league where it is tough for a junior to even get a starting berth. After this year of building the gridders of Wash- ington High School are looking forward to an SPSL crown in the 1970 season. Patriots Respectabl 4. at gs 2 I 1 , A Y . Through this year of questions, failures, hopes, and successes, we, as individuals, have gained in both maturity and self-confidence. Although it has been difficult to adjust to a duo-class school this year, we learned that sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice something for a more valuable prize. The junior class has proven to the entire school its willingness to search for answers to wonderings, in order to make for ourselves and others around us, a worthwhile existence. Each year it becomes more and more apparent how important every individual day is in my life. I have realized that each moment is meant to be savored like a juicy steak or turkey dressing on Thanksgiving day, for soon it will be gone. Many of these precious experiences will be buried in time, but this first taste of .high school life is one to surely be remembered as an open door to new- ness. .-,, . a dream come true. WHS students were given a newly developed system of education with freedom, a re- spnsbility students have sought throughout our generation. A choice in education, a new system to be established, each class open only four days a week, independent research projects, seminars, and a 4-'I-4 program. This system was proved workable by the WHS Student body. WHS, open for the second time in history, made history with this new system. Students given the opportunity, accepted the challenge to start a new era in education. Through continous work The Spirit of '70 staff tried to recreate this year of advancement in your yearbook. Special thanks go to jeff Hill, assistant editor, for unending assistance in producing this yearbook, to Mr. Ehlers, yearbook advisor, for all the extra hours out of his busy schedule, to Mr. Palm, American Yearbook Company consultant, for his help in making this yearbook possible, and most of all to you, the students of Washington High School for making this year the first in education that it was.
