Wurtland Ky. ...... 13 WEST OPENS SEASON WITH 26-0 TRIUMPH OVER AN OUTCLASSED CINCINNATI DEER PARK ELEVEN The West Hi Senators opened their 1953 sea- son with a decisive 26-0 win over Deer Park of Cincinnati. Performing on a rain-soaked gridiron at West Portsmouth, the Senators built up a 19-0 halftime lead, adding a final tally in the last quarter. Dick Mowery, an all SOC halfback last season, paced the winners with two touchdowns, one com- ing on a 55 yard jaunt. Ken Hamer passed to end Charles Dickson for a tally and Herb Gardner added a TD on a 50 yard gallop in the fourth quarter. PORTSMOUTH WEST TROUNCES NOTRE DAME 35-6 FOR FIRST SOC WIN' West roared to its first SOC win over an out- manned Notre Dame eleven 35-6 on the West Side gridiron. Dick Mowery was the big gun in the Senator at- tack, Mowery intercepted a Notre Dame pass, ran 85 yards for a TD, circled end for 30 yards and-an- other TD and passed to Ron Damron for another tally. Hamer scored a touchdown on a plunge and Farley scored on a 50 yard run. Notre Dame's TD came late in the fourth quarter. WEST LOSES AT XENIA 19-12 Portsmouth West traveled to Xenia, but came out loser in a hard-fought 19-12 decision. Xenia, always a Central Ohio powerhouse, had too much for the Senators. Operating from a split-T formation, they built up a 19-0 lead going into the fourth quarter, but there the Senators tallied twice and were going strong when time ran out. Dick Mowery raced 35 yards for a TD and Ken Hamer added the other TD on a 5 yard plunge. WAVERLY NIPS WEST IN SOC THRILLER 7-6 Waverly High scored a first quarter touchdown, added the. extra point on a pass then held on to edge West 7-6 on the West Portsmouth field in an SOC contest. This loss evened the Senators' record at 2-2 and they were out of the SOC lead. West's lone tally came in the second quarter when Bob Swords circled end for a 30 yard scoring play after Tom Payne had intercepted a Waverly pass. The try for the extra point failed and as it turned out that was the ball game. WEST ROMPS AT OAK HILL 38-0 West High School snapped a two game losing streak by steamrolling to a 38-0 win over an out- classed Oak Hill eleven at Oak Hill. Ken Hamer and Herb Gardner scored two touch- downs each in the first quarter and then added two more touchdowns in each the third and fourth peri- ods to rack up their third victory of the year. Bill Sparks and Dick Mowery tallied once each also. West's defensive platoon never let Oak Hill get in- side the Senator 20 yard line. SPARKS' BOOT GIVES SENATORS SOC TRIUMPH OVER WHEELERSBURG 7-6 West High School took an early lead and then held on to nip Wheelersburg 7-6 in a Homecoming game. Ken Hamer smashed across from the Wheelers- burg 3 yard line early in the second quarter to put West in front in the SOC battle. Bill Sparks kicked the extra point as the two rivals battled on even terms the rest of the game. Wheelersburg scored their TD after recovering a Senator fumble behind West's goal line. WEST UPSETS FAVORED NEW BOSTON 18-7 IN SOC CONTEST West High School dumped the slightly-favored New Boston Tigers, 18-7, on the West gridiron be- fore some 1200 nearly frozen fans. The Senators scored two touchdowns in the first period and once in the second stanza in registering their fifth win of the 1953 football campaign. The Tigers scored their TD in the second quarter. This was the fifth year in a row that West has bowled over the Glenwood Tigers. Not since '48 has a Tiger eleven won a game from a Harold tMonkJ Everling coached Senator eleven. Dick Mowery scored all three Senator tallies on runs of 85, 4, and 72 yards. The Senator forward wall paced by Bill Sparks, Ron and Tom Payne, Ernest Kennard, and Walt J arrells kept the Tiger offense bottled up all night. EAST AND WEST BATTLES TO A 6-6 TIE Portsmouth East snapped Portsmouth West's string of SOC championships at three straight and clinched the championship as they fought the Sen- ators to a 6-6 standoff at Allard Park. The tie, coming before a chilled crowd, gave East a 5-0-1 league record and the SOC title. West, which hasn't lost to an East team in the past four years, has a 3-1-1 SOC mark and is assured of the run- nerup position. Both teams scored in the third quarter. Herb Gardner sprinted 63 yards for West tally three plays deep in the second half. East got the tally right back on a sustained drive. The West linemen stopped the vaunted East run- ning attack and limited the Tartans to a 106 yards gained. WEST ENDS SEASON WITH 26-13 VICTORY OVER WURTLAND West High School packed all its scoring in the first half and coasted to an easy 26-13 victory over an outclassed Wurtland, Ky. eleven. Dick Mowery scored a TD in the opening stanza when he rambled 35 yards to pay dirt. Ken Hamer raced 50 yards for a tally and Herb Gardner gal- loped 45 yards for a score in the first quarter. Tom Tipton went over from 6 yards out in the second quarter to complete the West scoring. The win enabled West to finish the season with a 6-2-1 record - another fine season under Coach Monk Everling. Senatorian 104 .
