Miss Hagen V f T5 .. Mr. Daulton THE SENIOR CLASS INDUCTION. . . U S GRANT 38 - 39 The freshman year is always one of confusion and the members of this class found it true to form. Experiences such as those of different rooms for each class, lockers, etc., were new and added to the confusion. Other than these, though, the class noticed no great change from grade school life, but it certainly felt different to say, l'm in high school. REPLACEXVIENT. . . W H .Si 139 - '40 The sophomore year was one of sharp contrast to the freshman year, for the class was then en- rolled at W.H.S. Each member had a large part in making decisions concerning class activities. Despite the many interruptions. . .days missed because of lack of heat, insufficient water supply 7 the noise of construction . . . school life went on smoothly. The grand finale was a picnic at Roose- velt Lake. MANlfUVl3iRS. . . '40 - 41 The junior year was very interesting because there was always some kind of action. Early in the year, the class chose a ring and orders began to arrive in Ianuary. Next came the Iunior Play and various sales and drivesg later, another play, and finally the Iunior-Senior Prom with Hawaiian decorations and fried chicken. CALL T0 ACTION. . . '41 - '42 The goal . . . graduation . . . is in sight. Beyond that, a battle. The knowledge gained through maneuvers will be put to test. A real battle exists, not a sham with problems from books, but real, living problems to be solved. This battle is the battle of life. The seniors of '42 will meet the requirements. They will strive to preserve the ideals of delnoc- ratic living and make an all-out effort to uphold and defend the democratic form of government. erle Adams . , . Elective. The Iunior Class of this year, 1942, was the first Freshmen Class at Washington and next year will be the first graduating class to have completed four years here. The Freshmen Class of l939-40 adapted itself very well to the new school and several clubs were organized, many of which still exist. There were skating parties where everyone enjoyed himself . . . up or down. Last year, these same students were more active, being better acquainted with high school life and not being called g'Freshie by every upper classman. The Sophomore Class ranked high scholastically, also athletically, producing some of the basketball team's best players. The third year of school is one of the busiest, for plays must be given and money obtained for the Iunior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The students of the Iunior Class have responded magnificently to their duties. A successful play Called Tempest and Sunshine , directed by lNIrs. Donley, was presented and produced a great amount of money in the class treasury. In lN'Iarch, a skating party was held at rhc rink. The second play, The Hoosier Schoolmaster , was another amusing and successful comedy. A Fitting closure for the year was the Iunior-Senior Prom. The members of the IuniorClass are looking forward to next year being seniors and having all the accorded seniority rights. They will do their best to uphold the standards of VVashington. The heavier part of dramatics in Washington High School is done by the Iunior Class, Until this year very little experience in dramarics has been offered to Freshmen and Sophomores, there- fore the Iunior class must study, develop technique, and present two full length three-act plays. The plays chosen for this year's presentation were both based on novels of the same name that were best sellers several decades ago and have retained their popularity to the present day. These privates had reached a period in life for which they had striven earnestly: that of being a high school student. As new recruits, these amateurs were green horns in performing certain tasks which were demanded by those students of superior rank. They contributed largely to the loyalty and ever increasing morals, were well represented in clubs, and produced several outstanding students, both scholastically and athletically. When school began in the fall of 1941, these recruits started under a new title, being ranked then as Sophomores . They showed more independence and saw new responsibilities: they were more capable of managing the affairs of the class and as a result of this ability, the newly promoted recruits sponsored these booths in the Fall Festival . . . Barrels of Funn, f'Darts and the Noise Makers , all of which were genuine successes. In Ianuary, a President's Birthday Party was given. By the end of those nine months, however, they are full-blooded Wash- ingtonians. The freshman class was represented by four students in the All School playg Loretta Meyers, Vivian Woods, Iune Moore, and lack Handel. They are to be complimented highly for their fine work there, Also contributing to freshmen activities are the Latin Club, Home Economics Club, and the English Club. Many good times were had at the meetings of these organizations. The freshman basketball team shows several promising reserve players for next year. A record of their activities is given on page 58. Many useful and beautiful articles have been turned out. At the beginning of the term, classes were told to decide upon some piece of furniture as their first project. Plans were drawn before actual work was begun. This gave the young craftsmen valuable experiences in applying their ideas to paper and later to the materials. The experiences gained by these boys in fashioning the many products of the Industrial Arts department will prove to be invaluable. Now, more than ever before in this country's his- tory, men are needed who can use the tools of industry accurately and efficiently. These students gain an appreciation of the problems of production, a knowledge of mater- ials to be used, and an understanding of many processes in working with woods, metals, electricity, drawing, and planning. English is the medium through which we express our ideas and emotions, and in this great country where freedom of speech is an in- alienable right, it is even more important that we speak correctly. Latin is closely correlated with the study of English. It will be very useful in everyday life, because it is conducive to a better understanding of English and to increased ability to speak and write it effectively, a clearer knowledge of grammatical relationships, which will make easier the learning of modern foreign languages, a knowledge of the source of French and Spanish, which will add to the understanding of and the interest in these languagesgaknowledge of many of the technical words which l11llSf be used in professional work, a knowledge of the manner in which onc of the most famous peoples of ancient times expressed their thoughts, and of the influence of their language and civilization on our own. Latin is not dead g it lives in the romance languages and in a majority of our English words. Mrs. Donley, Latin lNlrs. IS there really a victor in any war? One aim of the social science department is to show students the mistakes made in governments and civilizations of the past with the hope that these students will help build a better world in the future. The various classes cover nearly every period in the development of civilization. World history is required in the sophomore year. American history, a junior subject, concerns the growth of our nation. Finally, in American government, American democracy, Civics, and economics, the specific problems of a democratic government are discussed. These subjects will be of priceless value to the American of the future, for the students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. W. Wolery and R. Tipton, A. History Scholarship W. NVilliams and D. Wheelersburg. In addition to the eighteen county league games that the Senators went through with no defeats, they played New Boston, Portsmouth East, Central Catholic, Dayton Roosevelt, Xenia Central, and Western Rural. V The Senators won twenty-three games during the season while dropping three. Two of these defeats were to Portsmouth East by one-point each, and the other loss was suffered at the hands of strong Xenia Central. Our boys were handicapped severely at mid-year as Cliff Williams passed the age limit and Alfred Nelson was graduated. The loss of these two boys, who had played excellent ball the first semester, had a marked effect on the team as was shown by the defeat at Athens. It is easily seen by his record on the next page that Lefty Nelson was the spark-plug of the team, but his record would not have been possible without the great team work of all his fellow-players. The tight defensive strength of the Senators was due to the sparkling work of Al Nelson, Don and Marvin Mitchell who held the opponents' scores in check. Eugene Shepherd gained many points under the pressure and his superior rebounding was al- ways a vital factor in the winning of games. Forwards Cliff Williams and Elwood Kegley also came through in the scoring field. First-line reserves . . . Cotton Davis, Paul Schwamberger, and Bill Singleton held up the reserve strength ofthe varsity in the final games of the season. They will probably lead the pack next year. Attcptmg the County Trophy Lefty Mert and Coach me Vanity 7211 TOPS IN BALL HANDLING Washington High School has every right to be proud of Glenn Lefty Nelson. During the past season he scored 614 points. . . the highest number of points that has ever been scored in the state of Ohio. The former high mark was 484 points. In eleven different games, Lefty scored more points than the entire opposition. Last year as a Iunior, Lefty scored 381 points, making his total for the two years 995 points. This scoring ability and his general playing ability caus- ed Lefty to be named as a forward on the All Ohio Second Team. According to the newspapers, he was not placed on the first team because the other players had met tougher competition. His shooting ability was uncanny. He was equal- ly good with long shots and lay-up shots. His field goal shooting average was approximately 34170 for the two years . . . an average which is exceptionally good for any high school athlete. Lefty is not only a basketball playerg he is a top- notch baseball player as well. Being left-handed makes him a natural first baseman. He also pitches occasionally and his hitting is superb. Last fall, in 16 times at bat, he walked twice, hit three home runs, three triples, four doubles, and two singles. He can play on our team anytime. This spring, after school is out, Lefty has an opportunity to go to Cincinnati for a try-out with the Reds. He has the stuff to make a success and here's hoping he makes the best of it.
