Administration In Tribute As a devoted teacher of Latin and an adviser to the Philomathea Forensic Society, Miss Handt endeared herself to countless Washington students in the years between 1918 and 1957. Many of us have fond memories of her fascinating presentation of Caesar's military struggles, Cicero's ageless orations, and Vergil's poetic accounts of the wanderings of Aeneas. Those of us who knew her through Philomathea will remember her patience, encouragement, and gentle humor as she helped the members of this club to achieve invaluable experience in public speaking. Her activities at Washington also included serving on the honor awards and commence- ment committees. Regardless of the function through which we came to know Miss Handt, it is certain that our lasting impression of her is E. P. HACKETT Vice-Principal that of a truly noble and kind woman. MR. EWERS Miss HANDT One of the most colorful careers in the history of Washington closed when Mr. Ewers retired last September. Many of us knew him in one or more of several capacities: as chairman of the social science department, as head of the corridor monitors, as teacher in charge of homeroom A, as the adviser to the january graduating classes, or as a teacher of economics or U.S. history. These were but a few of his functions since his arrival in 1913. During his years here he also acted as the first football coach and as an adviser to the Lincoln Forensic Society. He also conducted many of the student tours held during Easter vacation. Because of his versatility, he was able to handle classes in U.S. history, economics, so- ciology, commercial law, mathematics, and civics with his usual capability and thoroughness. Certainly we felt a strong loss in his departure, but the enrichment of his inspiration will remain with us always. 9
