CDQCZGCQ iron Seldom is it given to an individual to found a school in a new community and even more seldom is that individual able to devote thirty- iive years to the planning, building, and direct- ing of that school. Such was the builder of our school. As a founder he had vision: vision to select this plot of land in a new district of promising beauty and cultural background, vision to plan and equip a structure of enduring materials, spacious proportions, and artistic worth, vision to reserve a practice field for future champions. As a builder he had resourcefulness: from a crude structure amid bleak surroundings to a noble edifice in a flourishing community, from a faculty of three to a corps of ninety, from a student body of a mere 83 to the grand total of 2,538 --he has built. Through two genera- tions he has built, supplying the finer things for cultural growth: a pipe organ, chandeliers, bronze grilled doors, murals, and film projectors. As a director he had power: power to estab- lish a smoothly-running system of maximum efficiency for both student and faculty, power to encourage good study habits and joy of accom- plishment as a basis for scholarship and exem- plary conductg power to develop well-rounded personalities through a variety of activities ex- tending beyond the classroom and earning for Washington a nation-wide reputation in all fields of endeavor, power to grow with the school and yet retire while still in his prime. In recognition of the vision, resourcefulness, and power of this founder, builder, and director of our school and our community, We dedicate the Scroll Yearbook of 1947 to George J. Balzer.
