Such was the builder of our school. As a founder he had vision: vision to select this plot of land in a new district of promising beauty and cultural background, vision to plan and equip a structure of enduring materials, spacious proportions, and artistic worth, vision to reserve a practice field for future champions. As a builder he had resourcefulness: from a crude structure amid bleak surroundings to a noble edifice in a flourishing community, from a faculty of three to a corps of ninety, from a student body of a mere 83 to the grand total of 2,538 --he has built. Through two genera- tions he has built, supplying the finer things for cultural growth: a pipe organ, chandeliers, bronze grilled doors, murals, and film projectors. As a director he had power: power to estab- lish a smoothly-running system of maximum efficiency for both student and faculty, power to encourage good study habits and joy of accom- plishment as a basis for scholarship and exem- plary conductg power to develop well-rounded personalities through a variety of activities ex- tending beyond the classroom and earning for Washington a nation-wide reputation in all fields of endeavor, power to grow with the school and yet retire while still in his prime. In recognition of the vision, resourcefulness, and power of this founder, builder, and director of our school and our community, We dedicate the Scroll Yearbook of 1947 to George J. Balzer. GEORGE J. Q If xr I 4 .5 - i '36, Q fi ia a I iililllzg He who serves his school, serves himself. This adage is in keeping with the life-long policy of our former principal, George Balzer. His faithful service to Washington not only helped it to attain its place in the community, but set the example to be followed by faculty and stu- dents - as advisers and leaders, or monitors and aides .... To those who have contributed an exceptional amount of time and ability to the school during their stay here, the service key is presented upon graduation. To scores of moni- tors the service certificate proudly bears testi- mony as to their worth .... During the past year, a loyal band of workers has provided the crew with., which Mr. Schardt has kept his school smoothly running upon the proper course. With each one doing his share and helping the other fellow along, the ship has run a straight course to its destination. The years to come will find Washipgton sailing onward, well manned by an ever faithful crew. I W Mawr-wsama In order to form a more perfect union, estab- lish justice, insure domestic tranquility . . . Applied by our Student Council, these phrases af- fect us 'Tonians every day. This body representing every club and class provides committees to sponsor the majority of school activities ,everything from posters ,announcements, and point-system cards to auditorium programs and dances claim their at- tention. l EXECUTIVES AND ADVISORS Top Row: H. Their audio equipment has also proved most valuable . . . To the frantic loser of a pen, scarf, or wallet the Lost-and-Found is an essential part of our school. A close neighbor is the Library with its well-stacked shelves and capable staff. During the past year 800 new books, a teachers' reference secetion, new magazine racks, subscriptions to four metropolitan papers, and hanging copper flower pots were added. The value of our school aids is truly immeasurable. Top Row: Perlick, A. Papa, C. Schaefer, G. Grim, B. Schultz, D. Holtz, L. Suchy, C. Bach, E. Bergen. R010 Two: M. Erdman, L. Knurh, K. To a visitor the office creates a fine impression with its freshly painted walls, venetian blinds, and individual desk lamps. The painting of Mr. Balzer serves as a constant inspiration to both faculty and students. The corps of industrious monitors spell efficiency for Washington. They sort and file data, open lockers, answer the phone, relay messages, assist at the counter, and otherwise aid the faculty and student body. Another corps of volunteer Workers serve in the infirmary. Alternate teams, of two girls each, administer to our physical needs before and during school hours. These girls also assist the doctor and nurses in physical check-ups and records. It is impossible to estimate the valu- able part our indispensable monitors play in keep- ing our school functioning smoothly. Top Row: J. cafli, M. Juedes, M. Crampney, J. Uekert, J. Mangan, D. There's no need to ask what's the news of the day if you take the Washington Scroll. As each Wednesday rolls around, students are called to their homerooms to get the latest. Our school paper gives a composite of all important functions as well as topics of general interest. When you see the Scroll peaking out of a notebook, the lirst thing you spot are the ears with their timely sayings. Closer investigation reveals club write-ups, the 'tArouncl-the-Dial column, a complete and accu- ,rate sports section, a Popping-the-Question column, humor section, and enlightening editorials. The Scroll has merited a Pacemaker rating sixteen con- secutive times, and during the past year gained once again highest honor in the Medill Award. Geered to this efficiency, the business staff aided by getting subscriptions, advertisements, circulation Csome 1,740j, exchanges with other high schools, and contact with alumni. If you have seen a student Walking down the halls mumbling nursery rhymes to himself, you may rest assured he was not re- verting to his kindergarten days. He was a mem- ber of the Yearbook literary staff, which has strug- gled for two semesters to produce the articles for this annual publication. The business staff handled the scores of subscriptions, collected the payments, and saw to it that the Yearbooks were distributed or mailed. The art staff planned, page by page, all the sketches that add so much to a bookg they also made the diagrams and designed the cover. Blot- ters, posters, and a hilarious auditorium skit aided the publicity department in their campaign to tell what Uncle Remus said. The combined staffs say, Here is the book We built, and now it is yours to enjoy for a long time. BUSINESS STAFF Business Manager Assistant Business Manager .,,. . . . Circulation Manager ...., . . . Lively, educational debates are offered, original skits and jingles, readings, and musical numbers add zest to the meetings. Projects such as the Alph-aberical choice system and birthday- month groupings promote student participation. Alphanea also initiated a Member of the Week feature. In order to attain this honor, the person must have rendered valuable service to the club or the school. Talent, Willingness, and capable leader- ship are among the qualities which keep Alphanea in its prominent place at Washington. LINCGLN What makes Lincoln Forensic Society such an outstanding organization? The answer lies in the many opportunities for social and educational im- provement offered to its members . . . Among these benefits are learning how to think and decide wisely, getting acquainted with other students, and speak- ing before audiences . . . Skits, humorous debates, community singing ,and varied readings were pre- sented to lighten the programs . . . Debating, the chief activity in Lincoln, offered such thought- provoking questions as: Should extracurricular activities become a part of the regular school time, Should the United States grant a loan to Great Britain, and, Should President Truman's Strike Settlement Plan be adopted. That's why you hear the members say, 'Tm proud to be a Lincolnite!', Top Row: A. Anton, R. Frockt, G. Steinkrauss, A. Kagen, M. Lovett, S. Berson, T. Pittelman, I. Kane, W. Marcus, G. Hart, L. STATE .DEBATE ECDRENSICS One of the earliest convictions of Mr. Balzer's was the organization of a debating society to train young people to think. In the State Debate class, this ability is acquired through careful and diligent practice. The Varsity Squad, composed of Sandra Schmid and Carol Garfinkel, affirmative, and Lee Hiller and Jack Teplinsky, negative, debated the state question, Resolved, That the federal gov- ernment should provide a system of complete med- ical care, available to all citizens at public expense. They competed in the District Debate Tourna- ment at Messmer High. After meriting A's in the District and League contests, Sophie Pantazes, Sandra Schwid, and Corinne Silberman competed in the State Contest, in which Corinne placed A and Sophie, B. Three others who competed in the League Contest were Lee Hiller, Jack Teplinsky, and Harry Voight. Betty Jane Funk, Armin Greene, Louis Greenbaum, Flora Horowitz, and Barbara Schultz went as far as the District Contest . . . A Cappella, one of the purest forms of musical expression, is very old. Our school's A Cappella Choir links the musical past and present by carry- ing on the tradition of singing unaccompanied ecclesiastical music. Often, though, they are ac- companied by the organ or the piano in such secu- lar music as love songs and novelty pieces . . . As is the custom, the choir caroled in the halls before Christmas. Our school celebration would be notice- ably lacking without these simple everlasting carols sung so beautifully. One crisp December night passers-by in the downtown streets heard the voices of our schoir over a public-address system from the second floor balcony of the Plankinton Arcade. In Spring the choir presented a program of delightful numbers as part of the musical event of the year - the Spring Concert. A CAPPELLA I Top Row: R. Fauska, R. Plewe, J. Lange, J. Haering, J. Row A Cappella was represented among the six hundred choristers who took part in the public schools' con- tribution to the Milwaukee Centurama and the Easter Sunrise Service at Washington Park . . . The success of these chosen few is due largely to a sin- cere interest in vocal music. A rehearsal usually starts by vocalizing in order to prepare for the selections to come. Sometimes a member of the choir steps up to the podium and leads a song. Be- sides helping the individual to understand the in- tricacies of the directing, it benefits the whole group in following the idiosyncrasies of their maestro, Whoever he may be . . . Encouraged by his interest in its activities, the sports depart- ment, during the thirty-five years Mr. Balzer was principal, developed into one of the finest in the city. He shared the pride of the students and coaches-yes, the entire school-as year after year Washington continued to turn out champions. Football was the Hrst sport to be introduced at Washington--back in barrack days. Cross country, track, golf, tennis, swim- ming, Wrestling, and basketball-each has claimed attention as the school has grown. The girls, too, have enjoyed their share in the de- velopment of sports at Washington. Today, the girls' athletic department, organized as Wahiat, includes such sports as basketball, table- tennis, volley4ball, badminton, baseball, and shuffleboard. Both girls and boys at Washington enjoy good sportsmanship and clean-cut compe- tition as a result of the standards set by Mr. Balzer and his associates. A N figs, I A A Q by Sw W W ri , ily! gi! With pride, it can be pointed out that Purgold elevens under Coach Blackbourn reached an overall total of 134 victories against 27 setbacks, a truly admirable record. West Smashing line plan and shifty backfield work re- sulted in the Blackbournmen's crushing the West Redmen. The snappy signal caller, Wally Vogeler, sent Henes, Van Eerdan, and Larry Coles over the line four times for the 28-0 victory tally. Bay View Trampling Bay View in the fourth win of the season by a score of 27-13, the Washington power- house provided many exciting moments at South Stadium. For the first time in the season, Coach Blackbourn really cleaned the bench in giving the reserves a change to get in the game. May, Vogeler, Truss, and Coles provided the touchdowns, putting our team in the undisputed lead for the Champion- ship. Pulaski The powerful Washington line and speedy back- field drowned out the Pulaski Ramblers by a score of S0-0. The highlight of the game was tackle Dick Hartman's 60-yard Held goal on the kickoff in the second half. By now Pivar, Gettle, Coles, and Laev were well on the way to their All-City berths. i East On a fog shrouded field came the spectacular and unexpected upset in which Washington lost to the East Bengals,' 13-7. Bad luck seemed to reign for the Purgold eleven when quarterback WallyVogeler was carried off the field with a dislocated elbow. The line did a never-give-up job during the en- tire game, but the backfield was nearly immobilized by the muddy field. What might have been the winning touchdown for Washington, a pass play between Coles and Laev, was called back on a penalty during the last ten seconds of the game. Tech Avenging themselves for their loss the preceding week, our team quickly smashed the Tech t'Boiler- makers in a 3 5-0 win. Henes, Zuege, Miller, Truss, and Peters scored the winning touchdowns. Rufus King In the last and also the Homecoming game of the season, the Purgolders annexed the Championship crown by defeating a stubborn King eleven 38-9 at the fob bound North Stadium. A record crowd of 16,833 watched the most crucial game of the season. Our eleven really set the ball rolling in the second half with a series of passes and plunges that completely overwhelmed the Kings. The game, which gave Washington the undisputed conference title, broke the triple tie jinx of the preceding two years. H. MILLER R. PIVAR R. GETTLE R. STEINKRAUS W. VOGELER R. VOGELER R. The Q'Gettle Clan, playing a highly spirited Riverside team, smashed to victory by defeating the Orangemen 13-0. A Welcome rest was earned for the team when the Tech game was cancelled the following week. The Gettlemen suffered their only defeat at the hands of Pulaski. The next meet, in which our finmen swam against Tech's boilermaker squad, resulted in another defeat for our mermen. Though the power of Dick Garland, Dick Thurrell, and Al Smith showed itself in the number of first places won, it wasn't enough to offset the loss of 45-38. In the first victory of the season the Tonian splashers tripped the North squad 5 3-30. High scorers were Dick Thurrell, Al Smith, John Roy, and Dick Garland. A turn of events in the fourth conference meet against Bay View resulted in defeat, 5 4-29. The first meet of the '1947 season was a damaging loss at the hands of South, 47-36. Though the score didn't look good, three firsts were taken in various events. The Little City Meet gave out a third place for the Tonians, a meet with Pulaski was dropped 56- 27, and the City Meet resulted in a fifth place for our splashers In the concluding and State Meet of the season, Washington captured a seventh place. Mueller, Derrwaldt, Grindrod, Holzman, Laev, Peters, Reuter, and Truss were the returning lettermen from last year's squad. In the opening non-conference game, the Wash- ington bucket brigade lost out to Wauwatosa, 43- 20, in a hotly contested battle. Though the ball was really flying in the last half, Wfashington lost out because of the terrific midway deficit. Bob Roozen, Danny Holzman, and Bob Peters were the leading Tonian scorers. In the second non-conference game, the Golden Tide Quintet downed the South squad, 43-42. Dis- playing ability and team work throughout the en- tire game, our team was composed of only members who will return next year. Leading the locals was Dick Derrwaldt with eleven counters. Don Stanek, Bruce Mayer, Dick Mahnke, and acting Captain Don Grindrod also scored for the Boulevard Boys. 6 East Out-gunned by a speedy East Division quintet in the initial conference start, S 1-15, the Tonians just didn't have uit. Ineffective Purgold shooting proved the deciding factor. The second game failed to break the Orange and Black jinx. In a hard fought game the Eastmen again sneaked in a few quick shots to win the game by a score of 32 to our 29. West In a spectacular upset against the Westmen, the Purgold quintet upset the Redmen when they had closed our lead to 38-37g but a few quick buckets by Mayer, Mahnke, and Peters cinched the game for us. The top-notch scoring of Bob Peters didn,t save the second game for us. Early scoring by West im- mediately put our team at a disadvantage. Team- mate Dick Derrwaldt backed up Peters with eight scorers. R. POLENZ D. GRINDROD Custer The third game of the season resulted in a win of the Tonian brigade over Custer's basketeers, 46- 24. Peters and Mueller scored 31 points between themselves as leaders of the Purgold oiensive. A total of 40 markers were earned in the second half. Derrwaldt, Truss, and Grindrod came through with some excellent playing. LETTERMEN North North received a surprise when they tackled the Tonian bucketeers. The surprise came when the Holzman, Peters, and Grindrod clan turned the tables on the Blue Devil squad, 38-28. Killing our hopes for the Championship, North put the damper on our spirits by defeating our quintet, 54-33, in match number two. Leading scorer for Wfashington was Peters with six points. Injuries to Dick Mahnke hampered us in the center spot. In the first home game, the Kingmen downed a spunky Golden Tide, 47-39, in a wild battle. The second game played against King resulted in a firm trouncing. The fast-breaking, sharp-shooting Kingmen outplayed our boys, 64-44, in a game that really had the fans in the stands jumping. Cap- tained by Veteran player Warren Mueller, the team showed ability and the results of good training. The two suburban meets against Whitefish Bay and Wauwatosa resulted in losses for both of the encounters. These two matches were played too early in the season to show what the Purgolders had on the ball. In the eight Conference games played, two matches against Juneau and East were lost. The City preliminaries and finals were won by the Washington Q'Racketeers.,' Returning lettermen Lyle Voge, Warren Mueller, Richard Franklin, Jim Shapiro, and Don Braun came up against eight contenders in the 1947 season. Captained by the most consistent low shooter, Tom Veech, the team played ten conference matches. Spark plugged and captained by Tommy Veech, the team also had the benefit of two other veteran lettermen, Bill Waite and Gary Hanson. A quick summary of the season showed that the Purgolders won seven of their conference meets including the City Meet, but placed second to Tosa in the State Meet. Non-conference games were played twice each against Hartford and Marquette. In the '46 season a new system in which one of the team members would be both the captain and coach was inaugurated. Tom Veech was elected for this honor. Named as '46 lettermen returning for the '47 season were Tom Veech, Bill Broderson, Neil Boucher, and Russ Whitman. In the first dual meet of the season, Wash- ington,s trackmen trampled Port Washington 842 to 282. Very good results were turned in for the dashes, hurdles, distances, and Weights. Tom Truss started the ball rolling with a 9.1 second victory in the 70-yard high hurdles, Verne Eastman backed him up in third place. Lisle Blackbourn placed first in the century With a 10 second run. Ringing up the points which clinched the distance runs were Bob Mason and his friendly rivals Gordon Eastman, John Ernst, and Jim Fletcher. Completely outthrowing their opponents, Bob Pivar and Red Wilson grabbed the Weight titles and confirmed our victory over Port. ' Winning 12 victories in the various events, the Washington Spikeshods ran down the Gen- erals 812 to 312 on the King oval. High points were garnered in the hurdles, weights, and distances. A new record was set in the low hurdles by Truss, Dettman, Siegel, and Blackbourn. Two-tenths of a second was trimmed off the old record to set a new mark of 58.5 seconds. 1946 CITY RELAYS As forecasters predicted, our trackmen ran away with the City Relay Championship with a total of 73 points. Lincoln and King proved to be the toughest competitors having 60 and S 9 points respectively. Washington garnered some of the best performances in broad jump, discus, distances, low hurdles, and relays. One of the sensations of the meet was Bob Mason's spectacular bid for first in the mile run. He was closing a S0-yard gap between Washington and King only to fall down just before the finish line. 1946 STATE SECTIONAL Capturing eight first places in the State Sec- tional Meet, Washington rose as one of the most likely to succeedn in the race for the State Championship. The opponents were outclassed in the dashes, hurdles, distances, and in the field events. Paced by Blockbourn, Siegel, Mason, and Wilson, the thinlies qualified 16 men in 12 events for the coveted State crown. 1946 STATE MEET The relentless pounding of our thinlies on the oval of Camp Randall at Madison dispelled any doubts about Washington?s capturing the State crown. Again Blackbourn, Siegel, Mason, and Wilson starred by gathering 34 points among them to assure our seventh State Championship. Blackbourn,s outstanding performance in win- ning three firsts was something that is seldom equaled. His Hrsts in the 100-yard and 200-yard dashes and also the broad jump netted over half of the winning points. Top Row: H. Siewert K De Tienne R Zuege D McGowan R Johnson S Koltm W ones C. Habeck, R. In View of the record of our track team it can be truly said that the fellows really did a bang-up,' job in all of the meets encountered in the 1946 season. WAI-IIAT This year the girls of WAHIAT have par- ticipated wholeheartedly in basketball, volley- ball, baseball, and track. They competed with each other in ping pong, shuffleboard, and bad- minton which completed the well-rounded pro- gram of this year. The girls enter into these sports with a feeling of team work and coopera- tion, but they realize the need of coordination and fair play, also. WAHIAT, even though it is an entirely ath- letic organization, elects officers as the other clubs of Washington. They are elected on their good sportsmanship, ability, and interest, and serve for two semesters. Their duties during their terms of office are to assist in collecting dues and planning activities. Members of WAHIAT, during their stay at Washington, receive points for being on cham- pionship, teams, regular attendance, refereeing games, and serving as officers. The senior girl with the most points is awarded a Gold charm. Next highest receives a silver charm. Other girls who are high are given pins. After an eX- citing and close game, the NAVY emerged vic- torious over the DUKES, a junior team. The CHAMPS include the following: Barbara Bautz, Joyce Bickler, captain, Marilyn Cook, Marlene Diers, Janet Granberg, Shirley Har- tung, Janice Jaquith, Theodora Manos, Shirley Miller, Nancy Ristow, and Lois Thierfelder. This year there were ten teams in the series. As each game was played, one team was elimi- nated until only the champion and runner-up remained. The teamwork and cooperation dis- played by NAVY proved to be too much for the DUKES, and the USOPHSU really deserved the Crown for the 1947 season. Jean Gelhausen, Bernadean Van Engel SHUFFLEBCDARD Have you ever wondered what those triangu- lar shaped figures on the girls' gym floor are for? If so, stop your wondering, for you're about to find out. They are used in the ever popular sport shuffleboard. This year, following a series of elimination games, the team of eean Gel- hausen and Bernadean Van Engle defeated Rae Ginsburg and Barbara Paleen to win the cham- pionship. The game was close, and the lead changed hands many times. The teamwork and skill of the 'Qchampsf' however, proved to be too much for their opponents and Jean and Bernadean won. Congratulations to both of you! BADMINTCDN Badminton calls for plenty of real athletic skill and stamina. The many girls who feel at home on the badminton court with their rackets and shuttlecocks have reason to be proud of their outstanding efforts. Badminton was played as long ago as 1873, but, because it did not gain much popularity until the 20th century, it is now considered a modern sport. The first, which might be called International Match, was held in 1903 between players of England and Ireland. The name of the game comes from the small village of Badminton, Gloucestershire, England, where the Duke of Beaufort introduced the sport. This game demands certain athletic abili- ties and skills. Some of these are speed and stay- ing power, quick judgment, ability to vary the pace and technique, power to 'tsmashl' the shuttlecock with a strong down drive of the racket, and delicate control to drop', the shut- tle just over the net without giving even the- speediest and most skillful opponent a chance to follow through. PING PUNCH This year the ping pong championship went to Delrose Green after a hard-fought battle with Joanne Williams, runner-up. Del won the first game, but lost the second to Joanne who really displayed fine spirit. In the third game, how- ever, Del made a spectacular comeback to win the crown for the 1947 season. During the past season more girls have gone put for ping pong than in any previous year. They were eliminated one by one until only the champion and runner-up remained. By the time the final game was played these two certainly had proved their ability, and they are to be con- gratulated on their fine playing. Delrose Green, Joanne Williams BASEBALL Take me out to the ball gamef' Yes, we've all sung it many times, and this season the girls really started out with a home run, crash, bang! Because they have to play the games in the gyms, the girls cannot display their real batting ability and other skills, but the games are fun and ex- citing for both spectators and players. Like all the other contests of WAHIAT, the baseball games are played in an elimination series. That is, as each game is played, one team is elim- inated until there are just two teams playing. This game is the championship game. Consola- tion games were also played by some of the losing teams. The games are played between teams who lost in the eliminations. The consolation games were only in fun, and fun was really had by all. ,WM pgtzigga 5 -DULHSN E5 gtg' . , S' V 6 , 15 I eg? But classes at Washington are more than a group assembled in one subject area. From the time a sophomore enters until he dons the cap and gown, he realizes he is part of a Whole-a Whole composed of the entire student body from all classes. But more than that, he finds himself bound to a smaller organization- his class. He is proud to be a member of his class. Belonging to a small group gives opportunity to bring out innate qualities of leadership and per- sonality. But the loyalty to class does not detect from school devotion. Quite the contrary, it adds to it and makes it a more glowing personal thing. From the time Mr. Balzer gathered the first ,Tonians before him to the present day, Washington classes have stood true. 2 E f' 5 5 li . 1 2 ? nsniev l 1 2245, k A .. .xxavgge-zzz 2. if, Si 33 7 T- ? if s x Q fi if Q e fe Q, A 1 - 1 A fi- 5 ki W. ,M N QL, ff Z 'FE ji a ug -EX, -6 XV . s- wab A' ' f nz ,. ai A 3 S... ,Meri LIFE ADVISEMENT Miss Helen Green .,.. I As the strains of Poinp and Cireuinstanee summon the seniors to the auditorium for the last time, they realize that this marks an end and a beginning. Oh, yes, they may seem high and mighty to the new sophomore, but deep down, the Seniors are just a little bit jealous. These others still have the years that are filled with dances, hard work, and cokes with their friends. The Seniors have had all this: they,ve experienced all the joysg they've acquired the fast friends that come from sharing common problems. Now they are ready to go forth on their own. They have studied, yes, worked hard to be able' to walk down the aisle to the strains of Poinp and Cireninsfanee. The school is proud of its Seniors and is only too willing to follow the good examples they have set. To them we say a simple, Thank you, Seniors. i1 , ,QW f- -s 115 , h Q9 1 as Yi LR, at gg , '4 k 1 M Niven -mea... M, .ffm W Q5', .,? M1 ?S,,!. .wk -:. Teachers! Teachers! Calling all teachers! A new school is being built by Mr. Balzer and a staff is urgently neededf' This might have been the plea our first three teachers answered in 1911, when eighty-five students came seeking education. As the years rolled on, more and more students Walked up the steps of Wash- ington, and more and more teachers filled the spacious rooms until the total of ninety was reached. Today, seventy-two men and women strive to help each individual student find him- self and develop his talents, That is quite a chore, but our excellentnfaculty has ably worked toward this goal. As Washington looks back, it Will be discovered that not only has a school been built, but a community has been developed through the guidance of our teachers, Who have so nobly led the Way. ART - MUSIC HOME ECONOMICS Miss Keuper LIBRARY Miss Rosenfeld TRIBUTE Joy of accomplishment and satisfac- tion of service should be in the hearts of these two friends of youth, Miss Leila Rosenfeld and Miss Orma V. Keuper, Since the organization of Girls' Club in barrack days, Miss Rosenfeld kept a close contact with the student body, having f V most recently served as attendance teacher. The Yearbook staff, as well as her classes, were inspired by her cultural background. The originality and keen mind of Miss Keuper have made her classes noted for excellent student-work programs and have brought inspiration and joy to countless Alphaneans. Helping to build the reputation of our English Department, these teachers have brought real enjoy- ment to literature. To these outstanding faculty members, we extend our gratitude and best wishes. 149 Y . ff f 2 1 r S fr rim In me jf . f it l'!!l'm'111rla' fl !fs g These are the scenes within the halls In which the teacher fornied the laws That led the scholar wearied and worn In cheering the athlete all hrawn and hrain That fought to hring honie honor and fazne And special glory to the clnh That developed the aide That served the school That George hnilt. Into the past year was crammed a great va- riety of activities comparable to a whirling merry-go-round. Out of that whirl came foot- ball games, hops, proms, mat dances, skits of all types and purposes .... Beat King! Coine to the Basket Ball! Uncle Reniiis says, Buy a Yearbook! Dance to the Wiiiter Serenade! Coine to Magnolia Manor! These doings were well balanced by the more serious auditorium panel on Wisconsin authors and a talk on Junior Achievement. In accompaniment was a spirit of friendliness and good fellowship which pre- vailed throughout the school. This spirit was so contagious that visitors, such as the members of the All-City Student Council, were led to remark about it .... Each 'Tonian gained an indispensable wealth in the social graces, athletic powers, and pure enjoyment in doing and see- ing ....
