What are we to do about it? Obviously, the peace and safety of future generations must be insured. How? Simply by teaching youth the truth about war. Sometimes education is called a search for truth: again it is defined as a means to enable men to live together in harmony. Modern high school education must be both. Curricular work must make youths hate war for its horror, its inhumanity. 'Extrazcurrir cular activities must develop intensive interests in peacertime pursuits. Back of these two influences Will be a third, the faculty, guiding with wisdom and Vision the impressionistic youth. . If in this way the school teaches students to hate war and love peace, we may rest assured that those students as citizens will never be sacrificed to the cupidity of profiteers and the vanity of politicians; and if this ideal is ever to become a reality, we, as students, must bear ever in our hearts the last ringing challenge of our Alma Mater: iiThe seas of life are turbulent, but the wheel of the ship of fate is in your hands. Plot your course accurately; follow your compass faithfully. Beware the reef of shallow selfishness; let your vessel not be swerved by wind or wave. With your goal, the placid harbor of peace, take your stand firmly, back to the shoals, face to the starselooking forwardV CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION GRADUATES CLASSES ACTIVITIE ATHLETIC GLIMPSE Peace Flourishes where reason rules calm light of peace on a place of learning is the assurance of an enlightened future Education a preparation for the higher planes of happiness and peace of tomorrow . ? amiss 3 l 2 i r1: All quiet without, all busy within, and over all a clear sky-surely here is peace the symbol of progress and peace, waves serenely over the beautiful envirow ment of VVashington High ; x ?;ng , vixkx 363$ :xSS: . THE TEACHER'S CREED I BELIEVE in BOYS and GIRLS, the men and women of a great tomorrow; that what soever the boy soweth, the man shall reap. I BELIEVE in the curse of ignorance; in the efIicacy of schools; in the dignity of teaching; and in the joy of serving others. I BELIEVE in wisdom as revealed in human lives as well as in the pages of printed books; in lessons taught not so much by precept as by BXs ample; in ability to work with the hands as well as to think with the head; in everything that makes life large and lovely. I BELIEVE in beauty in the school room, in the home, in daily life and out of doors. I BELIEVE in laughter; in love; in faith; in all the ideals and distant hopes that lure us on. I BE LIEVE that every hour of every day we receive a just reward for all we are and all we do. I BELIEVE in the present and its opportunities; in the future and its promises; and in the divine joy of living. Edwin Osgood Grover. Page Trwenty-onc mmmw.hvj . THE ILLUSIONS OF WAR Warel d0 abhorm And yet how sweet The sound along the marching street Of drum or fife, and I forget Broken old mothers, and the Whole Dark butchering without a soul. And even my peacelabiding feet Go marching With the marching street, For yonder goes the fife, And What care I for human life! Oh, it is wickedness to Clothe Yon hideous, grinning thing that stalks Hidden in music like a queen That in a garden of glory walks, Till good men love the thing they loathe; Art, thou hast many infamies, But not an infamy like this. 0, snap the hfe and still the drum, And show the monster as she is.
