E IOR CLASS It was in the fall of 1959 that the Class of '62 first entered the halls of Washington High School, bringing with them a quiet but intensive spiritf, As freshmen, we had become the second group to participate in the developmental science-mathematics group, which was contin- ued through our high school years. As sophomores we were given Wrong directions by the upperclass- men. But, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Hafner, our newly appointed class adviser, we adjusted to high school life and got into the swing of things. To guide us through the year, we elect- ed Dick Schmotter, president 5 Angela Testa, vice president 3 Mary Wood, secretary, and Bruce Van De Walker, treasurer. One of our experiences as sophomores was sponsoring the tradi- tional student-faculty basketball game. The faculty, by the way, was spurred on to victory by their char'rning', cheerleaders. Our first year at Washington was a year of many new experiences. One of these was our first Homecoming. We remember the excite- ment during the coronation assembly and the game and danoe that followed. That Christmas we witnessed our first O.S.K. We became a part of it and joined others in the heart-warming spirit of giving. Adviser Mrs. Mary Hafner 10 HISTORY That year was really the year for sports 5 The hockey team went all the way to the State Tournament, and fought victoriously for the state runner-up trophy. That was also the year that the base- ball team won the Region IV Championship. Well, those months sped by, and, before we knew it, we were jun- iors. As the Junior Class, we sponsored a successful Christmas card and candy sale to assist us in our preparation for the Junior- Senior Prom CBali-Hai-South Seas Paradisej, our farewell to the graduating seniors. In the spring of that year, we got a crack at the world of the thea- ter by putting on our class play, a melodrama, Way Down Eastf' Our officers for that busy year were Bob Hall, president g John Buehler, vice president 5 Mary Wood, secretary 5 and Maurine John- son, treasurer. Summer came soon that year, and when we entered Washington again we were seniors. We realized the finality of being seniors as we took part in our last Homecoming, O.S.K., and Sno-Day. To lead us through the year, we elected Bob Hall, president, An- gela Testa, vice president 3 Pat Barnes, secretary, and Al Krause, treasurer. All through the year reigned the excitement of graduation, just around the corner. Pretty soon we no longer would be students of Washington, but alumni. As alumni we would look forward to the time when we can proudly return to our alma mater. JU 1011 CLASS During their junior year the class of 1963 elected Gary Woeltge, president, Shirley Sweazey, vice-president, Sandy Frontz, secretary, and Ceil Noe, treas- urer. Before Christmas the Junior Class sold Christmas wrappings and ribbon, the purpose of which was to earn money for the Junior-Senior Prom which was held April 27. Probably the most important day of the junior year for each student was the day their class rings arrived. The class would like to thank Mr. Thomas Pacholl, their adviser, for his kind patience and wonderful help. . . . HOMEROOM 110 ROW I: A. Tiegs, Tetu, V. Culver, E. Carlson, L. Mundt, D. Pabst, J. Through this philosophy we are introduced to an amateur ballet dancer and candy maker, a playwright and artist, an inventor, a printer, a-loafer, and a wise old man who gets exactly what he wants out of life. The action revolves around the ro- mance of Mr. Vanderhof's grand- daughter, Alice Sycamore, and her rich suitor, Tony Kirby. just when everything begins to look rosy, Tony brings his parents to dinner a day early and the fun and hilarity begins. 1 f HOMECOMIN G 1961 QUEEN BARB A week filled with excitement and an- ticipation came to a climax as the 1961 Homecoming assembly began and Prime Minister Denny Abbott selected Barb Westcott and Bruce Van De Walker to reign over Homecoming events with Lady-in-Waiting Angela Testa. Other queen candidates were Pat Barnes, Kathy Meyers, Sharon Sagissor, Sandee Scherberth, Sharon Smith, king candidates - Don Bloyer, John Buehler, Jeff Dzuik, Bob Hall, Leon Jacques, and Denny Senneseth. A talent-filled program followed the coronation, after which we rushed off to the game only to be defeated by Mechanic Arts, 20-0. The game was forgotten, however, in the excitement of the dance that evening. 2,4 ,,, J 4 KING BRUCE fi li 2 A Y , i f N ygzziy N S Q25 3 fggiwm. Www A Af Sw? ,J ,ff , 5 S . R Q? The Prexie gridders made up for their 13-O loss to Central with their next three performances. We saw the Prexies down the Harding Knights, 12-O, a very tough team of Greenwaves, 20-13, and a high-spirited team of Bernies, 26-O. Homecoming, Friday the 13th, was a fateful day against Mechanic Arts. With spirits down, they also lost to the Governors. However, the team, under the leadership of Mr. John McManus and Mr. Thomas Pacholl got fired up and stomped on Wilson. Then our fighting Prexies scalped the Humboldt Indians 19-14-. PREXIE PUCKMEN Skating out this year with only four returning letterrnen from the city championship team of a year ago, Coach Robert Turner had his work cut out for him. The season started out slowly, but the team had great potential. Captain and defenseman, Bill Johnson, returning Bruce Van De Walker, and the Hair linen from the MBU squad formed the core of the squad. The high-scoring second line of Leon Jacques, Les Blase, Don Prudhomme, and Roger Hudella was not to be looked at lightly. The Prexies ended their Conference season in sixth place with a 7-9-3 record. During the first game of the Region 4 playoffs, the Prexie puckmen car- ried the torch as other great Washington teams have done by defeating second-place Harding 1-O. In the next series of the playoff games, the puckmen lost 5-1 against Monroe. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Robert Turner, D. Setley, B. Van De Walker, W. Johnson, G. Loomis, R. Hudella, J. Buehler, D. Sacrihcing individual glory for team effort, defenseman Bill Johnson was again chosen for the All-City team. With the experience gained this year, the 1963 season shall prove to be an interesting and exciting year for the puckmen of Washington and their able coach, Mr. Robert Turner. Leading scorers: Tom Oakleaf, ABOVE, and Tom Ahlgren. BASKETBALL December 15 proved to be a losing day for the purple and gold when they lost to Wilson in their first conference match. A squad of 13 made up this yearls team, including three lettermen from last year who were Torn Oakleaf, Archie McAllister, and All-City Tom Ahlgren. The boys worked in a man-to-man press defense. Prexie cagers lost their tilt against Central 48-36, in a contest that saw Central hold the Prexies to 17 points during the first half. Washington also took losses to Monroe, and Harding. During the game against our rivals, Murray, the Prexie fans cheered their team to victory with a score of 62-47. The Humboldt- Washington game was a disappointing one with the cagers losing by two points, 5Oe52. Ending the season with a victory, the Prexies downed the Johnson Governors 62-60 in a, truly exciting game which went into a double-overtime. Coach Jack Edling came to Washington with a very impressive record from his previous teams. This record, coupled with a newly-manned squad, brought a slight rebirth in Washington basketball. In their second game, Washington clipped Mechanic Arts for 11 hits in a 7-1 triumph. Jeff Sauer aided his own cause with two hits in three trips. The Prexies edged Wilson next with a 4-2 Victory. In their fourth game, Jeff Sauer stopped Murray on a three hitter. Final score: Washington 13, Murray 4. Next Wash- ington defeated Monroe, 10-6. Washington's sixth game was a pitching duel between Hum- boldtis Marty Mendez and Washington's Jeff Sauer. The Prexies had a double steal nullified by the officials. G Buckling up a tremendous season that resulted in berths in the Region and prospects for the State Meet, was this yearls wrestling team. Re- turning this year to the squad were nine letter- men who began the season with full support. In the opening match against the Wilson Red- men, Washington's matmen topped with a score of 56-O. It was a complete victory with every man winning his match. One of the outstanding winners was Jeff Dzuik - Team captain, with 26 seconds to a fall. Mechanic Arts then gave the Prexies a tough struggle by tying them 28-28, but the mighty matmen gained additional strength and whipped Monroe with a 35-25 win, and mangled Murray's Pilots in a 42-12 match. The benders then pushed on to an un- fortunate loss to Harding 21-26. In the next battle, Wash was beaten 9-4-2 by Central. Once again the powerful Prexies came back and crushed the Humboldt Indians, 36-13. Ending the conference season, the matmen scored an- other 36-13 victory over Johnson. Placing fourth in the city conference ratings, Washing- ton entered five men into the district matches, and terminated the scoring with Jim Bloemen- dahl holding the 14-5 weight class, Jeff Dzuik capturing the 1541- weight division, and Norman Hildrum runner-up in the heavy weights. Basically cross country is a long distance run of a mile and seven-eighths without the benefit of a regular track. Four meets in addition to the big city meet, in which Wash placed fourth, were held. Scoring is accom- plished by counting the first five men that have com- pleted the course. Each man gets a number of points for the place he earns and the team with the least amount of points wins the meet. Coached by Mr. Daniel Hansen, Roger Schaffhausen was captain with Roger Hudella and Dick Weber top scorers. This sport demands determination and hard work. TENNIS TEAM Although the 1961 tennis team, coached by Mr. Daniel Hansen, was small, their hopes were high. The season was not too successful. The first match was against Humboldt with Wash losing 4-0. The next one against Mechanic Arts was more successful with Washington winning 5-O. In the following six matches, Washington lost to Central, 5-O, Wilson, 5-O, Murray, 3-25 Harding, 4--1, Johnson, 570, and Monroe, 3-2. In the city doubles, Wulf Massel and John Whitlock beat Mechanic Arts' doubles 6-1, 6-0, but lost to the team from Murray in the second round. In the city singles, Dave Diettrich won his first round against Wilson but was defeated by Dave Rosenberg of Central in the second round.
