Under the guidance of Mr. Robert Turner, adviser. they sponsored a student-faculty basketball game to raise money for their annual spring picnic. This class included the first group of students assigned the experimental development program in mathematics and science in St. Paul. Representatives of the Prexie chapter also attended the monthly meetings of the all-city council. Eight members decorated the Children's Hospital for Thanksgiving, and another group was trained for jobs as play-ladies at Gillette. SPANISH CLUB Feliz Navidadu - Merry Christmas - was the greeting heard at the Spanish Club's Spanish-style Christmas party just before the holidays. Favorite carols were sung in Spanish, a pinata was enjoyed in the cafeteria. A pinata is a pottery jar Filled with candy and hung from the ceiling. Lynn Cupkie and Ron Menier in the doubles defeated four of eight schools and lost a heart-breaker to first- place Central. Jerry Schultz and Ron Menier teamed in the city meet to win one victory. Coach Byron Gibbs turned the coaching duties for the 1959 season over to Mr. Daniel Hanson. 'S Qi. ' to VARSITY GOLF E R9 Captain Richard Bohaty lcd his team in individual match points during the season with 92, closely fol- lowed by John Bloyer with 9 points for the season. GYMNAQTIC TEAM Gymnastics under Coach John McManus had its best year in recent history. Led by Captain Russ Schoeller, the team finished with a 3-2 record in Class D competition and a 2-3 in Class C. Tom Kresko, Joe Lazarich, and Russ Schoeller qualihed for the region and Schoeller placed fourth in the mats to qualify for state competition. Only Senior Dick Portner will be lost to the squad and McManus ex- pects an even better record next season. WASHINGTON'S 'A' SQUAD HOCKEY TEAM Wlashington High School's varsity hockey squad un- der the direction of Coach Robert Turner completed the 1958-59 campaign with a season record of 12 wins, seven losses, and one tie. Prospects for a favor- able season were considered remote with a team made up of young and inexperienced players. Local papers predicted a fifth place for the Prexies in a highly- regarded St. Paul conference. The season was to be one of seasoning the yearlings for an allfout effort in '60, Instead. the season opened with an impressive 10-2 victory over Nfinneapolis lVest and roared to completion with a heartbreaking 5' -l loss to Patrick Co-Captains Bucky Kendig and lliike Gerdts. Henry for the Region T title and a state tourney berth. Highlights of the season included a 2-1 win over Monroe, a game considered by many one of the finest battles on auditorium ice. Prexies ended in third place in the conference with a 5f2ff-l record. The Prexies defeated Harding, season co-champion, in the Region -l Play-offs. They lost the championship to johnson. 2-l. in the final 13 seconds of play. Co- Captains Klike Gerdts and Bucky Kendig will be lost through graduation, and it will be hard to 'replace these key defensemen who were skilled and Ffghting stalwarts. 7 , Battling goalie John Fianclaca.
